Taking a year away from a young person's life is a lot different than an adult. Milestones missed, relationships lost, these years shape a young person into the adult they will eventually become. Kids are not even at risk.

The hospital ship and the makeshift hospital were deemed unsuitable. Given the reaction regarding school closures there'd be pitchforks if they even attempted to place them with their families. To date I haven't heard one viable solution to what the state was supposed to do with so many people.
For a short time, I volunteered at a local library as a reading and writing coach for grade school students. More than a few kids told me they wished I that I was their "regular teacher," because I made reading fun and interesting. I spent a lot of time with those kids. Hopefully, I got the "wheels turning" regarding some future authors and teachers. Students of any grade level need instructors who care -- not just someone concerned desiring a paycheck. Oh yeah, the kids liked Dr. Seuss books too!

I am so thankful for four reasons. 1. I don’t live in California.2. I don’t live in New York. 3. I have no children being effected by this disaster. 4. The teachers in the school district I live in are not part of a union. This is an absolute shame that this is happening to the children and parents of this country. Today’s was my kids 1st day back in middle school. 4 classes involved coloring, PE consisted of juggling.. this is 6th and 8th grade... teachers don’t care about teaching...
That's maddening! Myself and 3 kids were being taught geography, civics, math, English and gym was a time to exercise. School went from around 8:15 to 3:00 pm or so. You say coloring, juggling? My God. We also had classes in foreign language also. Sports were always an option, also.
I could totally see that happening with a practical purpose. Making bar graphs in math, color-coding maps of some kind in social studies, making diagrams of cells in science, and then art class. As for juggling in P.E., that develops hand-eye coordination, agility, and reflexes far more than basketball ever will. So... frankly, I would rather my kid learn juggling than most team sports. That said, we homeschool, so :P

There is nothing remotely close to being productive in those classes that would lead them to success in the future other than going food shopping.. IMHO, Team Sports is way more beneficial as everything we do in life at some point requires us to work together with someone to achieve tasks and goals. Juggling... maybe you get you ready for the circus.. no future in that... no offense to anyone that But hey, I respect everyone's opinion.. as long as it doesn't rub off on the future of my children..

I live in California and our k-6 has been back since December and middle and high school are going back this month. California is a really big state so where I am isn’t what it’s like everywhere but we’ve been working well with our community and teachers.

I teach 7th grade at a K - 8 charter school in Florida. We closed down last year in March, but we've been open for in-person learning for the entire 2020 - 2021 school year. While we've had a few incidents of COVID among both staff and students, it certainly isn't wide-spread. There are so many teachers all around the country refusing to get back to work until they are vaccinated. I've been teaching in-person since August. I have roughly 150 students. Out of all of them, only one has had COVID. Three teachers who work in the K - 5 area of the school contracted COVID in the 7 months since school has started. All have since recovered and are back to work. Schools simply aren't super-spreaders like most thought they would be. I was initially opposed to going back to in-person teaching, but after a couple of months, I became comfortable with it. Students and teachers were not getting sick left and right; I clean my classroom and made sure my students wear their masks. We need our students to learn, and the only way to do that is to open the schools. I have first-hand experience that has proven to me beyond the shadow of a doubt that the pros of opening schools far outweigh the cons of keeping them closed. Florida isn't struggling nearly as much as states like California as governor Desantis allowed Florida to stay open, in more ways than one. We hosted the super bowl. Spring break vacationers are flocking to our beaches. I know people who live in Manhattan who take weekend trips here to enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere. I realize that fewer people would die from COVID if we had tight lockdown restrictions. However, look at all the lives that have been ruined by lockdowns. Many of our nation's small businesses will never open again. Desantis acted to ensure that this did not happen in Florida. Opening the schools was just one very important part of his overall strategy. COVID cases and deaths were pretty bad in Florida in the latter part of 2020, but when comparing to New York, New Jersey, and California, all of which had very tight lockdown restrictions, the numbers of cases and deaths were on par per capita. I understand arguments regarding indoor dining and bars, but school is an entirely different thing, and the time has come for teachers to stop thinking about themselves and to start thinking about the students whom they serve.
Here in Chicagoland I recently saw an article about how schools in the high income suburbs have opened faster and more completely than low and middle income ones. Of course the author assumed this was due to systemic racism but I suspect it shows that teachers unions know whose kids they actually have to treat well and whose (huge majority) they don't have to care about except for lip service.

So Cecily Myart, president of the L.A. Teacher's Union thinks that having students back in school would be "rushing it" after they've been out of school for an ENTIRE YEAR. She and others of her ilk plus school administrators, across the country, have had plenty of time to figure out how to get students and teachers back in the classroom. And in too many school districts, they've failed to do so. These individuals, have 'flunked' in their job.
All states in America should be fighting for are children to have the same education this woman received. Rich or poor are children are suffering and the ADULTS aren’t stepping up sadly.

Today’s was my kids 1st day back in middle school. 4 classes involved coloring, PE consisted of juggling.. this is 6th and 8th grade... teachers don’t care about teaching...
That's maddening! Myself and 3 kids were being taught geography, civics, math, English and gym was a time to exercise. School went from around 8:15 to 3:00 pm or so. You say coloring, juggling? My God. We also had classes in foreign language also. Sports were always an option, also.
If you want your children to be Marxist dullards (like their teachers) then keep them in public schools.
I could totally see that happening with a practical purpose. Making bar graphs in math, color-coding maps of some kind in social studies, making diagrams of cells in science, and then art class.
As for juggling in P.E., that develops hand-eye coordination, agility, and reflexes far more than basketball ever will. So... frankly, I would rather my kid learn juggling than most team sports.
That said, we homeschool, so :P
@@grantjohnson5785 I definitely see where you are coming from.. With the coloring, they were coloring dinosaurs, fruit, and vegetables.. There is nothing remotely close to being productive in those classes that would lead them to success in the future other than going food shopping..
IMHO, Team Sports is way more beneficial as everything we do in life at some point requires us to work together with someone to achieve tasks and goals.

I live in California and our k-6 has been back since December and middle and high school are going back this month. California is a really big state so where I am isn’t what it’s like everywhere but we’ve been working well with our community and teachers.

And since kids are being medically treated for their anxiety, that means they are being put on medication which may in some cases affect their ability to develop the capacity for controlling their own emotions as adults without medication.
My grandson who is in 6th grade has forgotten how to write his letters. His education is so sad. He didn't know who Washington Franklin or any of our founding fathers were. He has a class about emotions but didn't know about his country's founding!

I teach 7th grade at a K - 8 charter school in Florida. We closed down last year in March, but we've been open for in-person learning for the entire 2020 - 2021 school year. While we've had a few incidents of COVID among both staff and students, it certainly isn't wide-spread. There are so many teachers all around the country refusing to get back to work until they are vaccinated. I've been teaching in-person since August. I have roughly 150 students. Out of all of them, only one has had COVID. Three teachers who work in the K - 5 area of the school contracted COVID in the 7 months since school has started. All have since recovered and are back to work.
Schools simply aren't super-spreaders like most thought they would be. I was initially opposed to going back to in-person teaching, but after a couple of months, I became comfortable with it. Students and teachers were not getting sick left and right; I clean my classroom and made sure my students wear their masks. We need our students to learn, and the only way to do that is to open the schools. I have first-hand experience that has proven to me beyond the shadow of a doubt that the pros of opening schools far outweigh the cons of keeping them closed.
Florida isn't struggling nearly as much as states like California as governor Desantis allowed Florida to stay open, in more ways than one. We hosted the super bowl. Spring break vacationers are flocking to our beaches. I know people who live in Manhattan who take weekend trips here to enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere. I realize that fewer people would die from COVID if we had tight lockdown restrictions. However, look at all the lives that have been ruined by lockdowns. Many of our nation's small businesses will never open again. Desantis acted to ensure that this did not happen in Florida. Opening the schools was just one very important part of his overall strategy.
COVID cases and deaths were pretty bad in Florida in the latter part of 2020, but when comparing to New York, New Jersey, and California, all of which had very tight lockdown restrictions, the numbers of cases and deaths were on par per capita. I understand arguments regarding indoor dining and bars, but school is an entirely different thing, and the time has come for teachers to stop thinking about themselves and to start thinking about the students whom they serve.
So Matt has a child, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess he represents the B in the LGBTQ community.

Here in Chicagoland I recently saw an article about how schools in the high income suburbs have opened faster and more completely than low and middle income ones. Of course the author assumed this was due to systemic racism but I suspect it shows that teachers unions know whose kids they actually have to treat well and whose (huge majority) they don't have to care about except for lip service.

My daughters school went back to in person classes last august. Students were given a choice between at home or in school learning. There have been zero outbreaks of the corona virus and today the school is back to almost full capacity.

So Cecily Myart, president of the L.A. Teacher's Union thinks that having students back in school would be "rushing it" after they've been out of school for an ENTIRE YEAR. She and others of her ilk plus school administrators, across the country, have had plenty of time to figure out how to get students and teachers back in the classroom. And in too many school districts, they've failed to do so. These individuals, have 'flunked' in their job.
All states in America should be fighting for are children to have the same education this woman received. Rich or poor are children are suffering and the ADULTS aren’t stepping up sadly.
