Would have been a great way to ship some of my personal belongings over as well. :( Also the "safety check" is all stuff that is done in the general inspection in my mainland state, so it's not new to me. I am pretty sure someone can do it for you. I was able to pickup a car for my client here in Oahu so I would assume you could have someone drop it off for you but I would check with the shipping company.
Realistically, what will happen if you leave some stuff in your car? Will they inspect before accepting? About 12 years ago, I shipped a truck to hawaii with surfboards in the bed (under a locked bed cover), and there were no issues. Wondering about what would happen if I tried to do the same today.
On registering the car when it arrives... assuming I have all the docs and safety check done, if I don't have a permanent address yet (using like a UPS Box), how do I register the car with an address (I don't think PO boxes are allowed)? I might have a temporary address where I am renting. Do I use that then change again when I move to a more permanent address?

They probably will just deny you putting it on the ship.
