I live in Malaysia & i was one of the few students who had to repeat a year of grade 7 and today is my first day. I really think a lot of negative stuffs whenever i think about myself as a repeater and i really needed some help. Your speech inspired me a lot to work harder so i can catch up to the others but it still doesn't make me happy for who i am.

      +Nefthali G Wong Dear Nefthali,
You inspire me. I am moved by you. Thank you for being so strong sharing your feelings and story with me. I appreciate you just the way you are. Your academic struggles do not define you. Try not to focus too much on catching up to others but instead try to get to know yourself better. Love yourself 100%.
You repeated a grade as I have but you are not a "repeater". You are so much more than your circumstances.
There are three things that I know about you that are absolutely true. One: You are a wonderful and beautiful human being. Two: You are a resilient and thoughtful leader. And three: You are brilliant and your brilliance shines beyond what ink on paper could understand.
Don't let anyone or anything take your smile away.
I am so proud of you. Keep your head up. I am here for you. Feel safe and free to communicate your feelings with me and this community as you continue your journey. I won't give up on you, so don't give up on yourself.
I know what your pain feels like because I repeated the 10th grade twice. I really understand how you feel right now. I feel your hurt. Keep your head up. Do your best, ask for help but know that you are not your grades. You are a wonderful soul. Thank you for being you.
      Your friend, Fernandel

“Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living the result of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinion drowned your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Sometimes, to be honest, the most percentage of disappointments and pressure come from my school (( or school lifestyle)) i am really pressured and keep thinking of how do i get to have great performance in school. I also pressure myself too much. I feel like I'm overdoing it. What I really want to achieve is the balance I have for my priorities in life. And now, it's been 3 months since I got sick and couldnt really do well and attend school regularly. I feel so sorry for my family, for my mom especially (since she's the greatest inspiration i have for school success and also God) i really want to do my best not just for my future and how i'll change the world but also out of gratitude for my mom. for raising me and surpassing the struggles she had all alone. I pray and try really hard to encourage myself right now because it has been hard. But I'm not gonna give up. i guess i just need some enlightenment and inspiration and especially motivation to journey in life, to learn from the experiences of others :)

My mom graduated from Harvard with a masters in education. She passed away in 2013. My questioned is she said from the first day of school to the last question on the test nothing less then 110 percent yes 110 percent overkill. How do I keep myself that intensely motivated and focused for a whole semester let alone a week, lol.

      raffis you Dear Raffis,
Great questions. I often competed with the best students in my classes and we usually had friendly wagers for best grades, like buying the winner their favorite snack, etc. I don't study very well on my own so I studied with those same folks that I was competing against. I learned very early on to reward myself often if I do my best, even if the result is subpar. One of my favorite rewards, which I still enjoy today, was to practice yoga. A high dose of tutoring, mentoring and late night studying helped me immensely. The people around me inspired me (and still do today) to keep pushing and keep believing in possibilities. I have developed a sense of purpose and that keeps me going everyday.
It's not all rosy. I've fallen short many times but I am so grateful for the people around me including strangers who remind me in so many ways that getting back up is a possibility.
Raffis, you are very thoughtful. Thank you for our connection. Thank you for your time. And most importantly, thank you for being you.
      With admiration,

I don't know most of the times what happens to me is that I am not exited about the fact of actually going to the public school system because I feel at least in my country that it isn't worth it and it is more like a jail that a actual school, I'm in 10th grade and I hate waking up every morning to go to school, I wish I was brave enough to tell my parents I want to homeschool myself. But I don't know where to start :(

      +mariana espinosa Dear Mariana,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feelings with this community. We all care very much about you. There is a lot of research that defends your point of view of the public school system. I have felt that way before. When I was a teen I had a hard time communicating with my folks so I don't think I could have approached them if I was in your situation then. Do try to find some time to share your feelings with your parents if you feel safe. Please know that you are a capable young leader. Perhaps you could start a club at school or in your community where you can use some of the things that you are learning now, making your learning a bit more relevant. I wish you the very best in all of your endeavors.
I am so proud of you. Thank you for being you.

i would be very happy if you could reply.

      +ARedPoint Dear ARedPoint,
First of all, thank you for your message. It made my day. I had a really rough day today and your message made me smile. So thank you and thank you too for being you.
About the struggles that you are currently facing - I totally understand you and where you are coming from. I have in the past and I still struggle today with those same feelings. When I am at my lowest these days, I take the time to get to know the real me. I usually take a complete day to myself, do some yoga and just try to treat myself kindly. At the end of that day, I write five positive things about myself beginning with "I am" (ex. I am me. I am thoughtful. I am a friend to someone. I am peace. I am love undefined.) and I post it somewhere where I can see it. Then I write on a napkin three things that I can start doing to begin the process of changing my situation. Of those three things, there should be one that I can accomplish by midnight that night.
I have learned that when it comes to school work, quite a bit of it can feel like rote learning and that is because it is. I sometimes try to put in practice what I am learning or talk to friends about it and this seems to help me greatly.
In my opinion, the easiest and smartest way to change your academic outcome this year is to not focus on last year or beat yourself up but to instead find one more person than you had last year to study with. A teammate, a peer-to-peer tutor can help make your journey to better grades a less stressful one and maybe even fun.
Please know that you are a unique and wonderful human being. Like me, you may not be perfect but you sure are a limited edition. There is only one you so forgive yourself often and love the you that you are just as you are, more than ever - more than the day before.
The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement. I am rooting for you. Please enjoy your improvement journey because you deserve it. Because you deserve the best.
Thank you for being you my friend :)
      Happy Studying,
      Fernandel

Wow! May I ask what is your mindset every morning? Do you think is kinda too far into the school year to change the grades yet?

    • @mindfulness179
      @mindfulness179 8 лет назад

Dear Bill, When I used to take the train to work, every so often I would be rushing for the train and I'd miss it by an inch. This would frustrate me so much. I would be so angry at myself the whole ride through on the following train. Then I thought that perhaps risking getting high blood pressure and all sorts of other health issues was not worth it. So now, I do my best to get to the train on time but if I miss it, I say, "I'm early for the next one"!
My mindset varies every morning. I go through ups and downs like everyone else. I am a beautiful human being just like you after all. The other day I was doing some reflection and thought of this: An optimistic present gives rise to a hopeful future which challenges past perceptions and current events. Our goal is thus not to seek perfection but to nurture our optimism.
So, thank you for being you. You are greater than your circumstances.
      All the best,
      Fernandel

Wow, I liked the video. I appreciate it since my pathway has not been so straight and this is motivating for me to not be defined by my past. But I am more impressed by the uploaders persistence in replying the comments on this video. And I am curious about why. What is your cause?

    • @mindfulness179
      @mindfulness179 8 лет назад

      +LolitaGray Dear Lolita,
My name is Fernandel Salomon. My purpose is to be an example of not perfection, but of a person full of failures; still appreciating who I am, just as I am, with a growth mindset, taking deliberate action to give back to others. I respond to comments because I am thankful that viewers have the courage to post them. I believe that life is a journey and to be able to have you as a part of my life's journey is not an accident but a wonderful experience. As much as I may seem all put together, commenters inspire me to keep going. There are times when I am at my lowest and it is a comment that brings me back to where I need to be. We are not islands. We all need each other. My biggest concern with this page is that I hope that it continues to be a safe place where viewers can find loving and thoughtful friends who seek first to understand rather than to be understood. I hope in earnest that viewers can find this space a safe haven from harm and hurt. I don't mind if this video doesn't get many views. I am interested in connecting with each individual who reaches out to me. I feel very fortunate to have that opportunity. Although I have a very productive schedule, I make it a point to never be 'too busy' to reply. Every voice matters. As Marianne Williamson said, "You are powerful beyond measure". Thank you so much for allowing me to open up my heart to you and our RUclips family here. I appreciate your leadership. Thank you for being you. In unity of purpose,
      Fernandel

Dear Channel, Thank you for your sincerity. Are you passionate about engineering? Grades are not everything. Actually they are not important at all. I find joy in challenging myself to do my very best. Whatever the results are, I am happy with them. Learning resilience through our academic careers is more important than seeking perfection through grades. One of my favorite quotes is by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. He said, "A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimension". To me Oliver's statement means that I should try my best and live happily with the results because I grow emotionally and intellectually through my taking initiative. I think that true leadership is taking initiative, communicating and following through. And I strive in my daily life to learn and apply the skills of a true leader. I know that you too are seeking to grow as a leader in your community. So keep your head up. Do your best, because you deserve the best both from yourself and from those around you. I am rooting for you. I am so proud of you for who you are and grades have nothing to do with it. Thank you for being you.
I am happy that we have connected. Everything is going to be okay. Don't forget to smile. :)

Fernandel I have a problem, I've been reading through some of these comments and although they are very similar to my situation they are also very far from my situation, what I mean is that I hated school and I didn't do very well in it either and now I'm in university and at the beginning of the year I was very keen to start here and show my full potential however now that I'm at the end of the first semester I see that I find it hard to apply myself to the work, it's as if the work just bores me too much and I don't want to do it, I leave my work to the last minute and I'm afraid I'll fail the first semester because of it. Is there any possible way that you could help me in this situation?

      Fabian Hullen Dear Fabian,
I sincerely hope that this message finds you in time. It sounds like you are finding it increasingly difficult to relate to your school work. It may seem unclear how applicable it is to your life and the boredom with your course work may come from what is commonly known as "rote learning". I hear you loud and clear. Think basketball for a second. ...You came into this game with a game plan and you've got to defend and score until the 4th quarter buzzer goes off. You cannot win on your own so be sure to ask your coach for support and work with your teammates.
I firmly believe that you are brilliant for seeing your errors and for reaching out for help. Finish strong, you are still in the game. I am so proud of you for just being you and for all that you are accomplishing.

for some reason, all the lesson we learn at school has nothing to do with real life or our job tommorow,i lost motivation to study after i understand that, how do u think about it? some school just playing with some sofiscated problem to solve ,but its has nothing relevant to our real world or what important to do in our job , i lost motivation to study, someone think the same of me? i like reading book, but not school book, i love reading article ,magazine, i like basic knowledge, i love how teacher give me guidance how to think correctly, i think thats important, but i dont like solving problem which i dont even know what is it,and after i can answer it, i still dont get it what the real meaning of that lesson, that makes me so boring in class, and think another problem in real life.. thanks :D

Dear Adana, Your frustrations are valid. Your feelings are valid. What would a better model for school look like to you? Take some time to think about that. Why would your better model for school be relevant at all, meaning why should students attend your school at all? Because I can sense a passion and desire to create change within the education system from you, I know that someday you will. I am here for you and I am always rooting for you. Fernandel Salomon sorry for slow response, well i think student need direction from school or their university for the crucial problem the world has fight with nowdays, they need to focus on solving problem that really exist today, theory is important because it teach u how to think correcly like the genius people or philosophers, but its not the priority to think hard about what we dont need the day after graduation,we need to educate student to what important, and because of that, im sure, student will become enthusiast to their school ,and if there is a lesson where is too abstract that important but the student doesnt know what it for, we need to tell them what the purpose of this lesson, and whats part u need to understand for that purpose,im sure even they dont get the real purpose of it,they will try hard to solve it and pass it, idk how the condition at ur country, but me,im from indonesia and so much thing just need to be solved.but u dont get anything, anything ,after u pass it,because curiculum in this country really bad,and they just want their student follow the curiculum and pass on it,without care what is for and what the point of wasting time struggling on something we dont use or dont understand about. pass exam in here really easy, its like u just need to be stupid sometimes and do not think to wide, just think like if a->b then u should answer a->b,with many variaton of stupid thing lol, btw ,Thanks for ur reply ,it really makes me better, greet from indonesia.

Thank you for having the courage to share your struggles. I know how difficult that is to get to the point where you actively seek help. I hope that all is well with you personally. A great way to separate yourself from the crowd in your college application is to demonstrate leadership. With your parents' permission, see if you can team up with some pals at school and form a study club. Give the club a mission statement for something that you all care about and trade strengths with your peers. Example, if you are good in math, help tutor a friend in math and if english is their strong subject but a challenge for you, allow them to help you.

      Dear Eyiah Ibrahim,
I totally understand. I have been there and even the best students have been where you are now. Try this, take a deep breath, call it your "victorious breath" and high-five yourself by saying five positive things about yourself beginning with "I am". Example, I am victorious, I am success, I am determined, I am capable, and I am tenacious.
When I am where you are now, I usually clean up my room a bit and get a new notebook or some blank sheets of paper and just jot down what it is that I need to accomplish. Then I just start, right where I am, with whatever resources and knowledge that I have.
If you are as lucky as I have been, you'll find classmates who are right where you are or who are willing to study with you. Try not to overlook that opportunity.
You've got this! Keep your head up, I am proud of you.
Do your best on your exam and I'll write you a personal "Thank you for being you" letter.

    Dear Fernandel Solanman
May I borrow a significant proportion of your time. Whilst harbouring no intentions of paying it back; What that statement implies. Well if you read this anyway, which I assume you will. I didn't intend to comment, yet here I am, you've convinced me with your consistency in replying to comments. Well.. let's cut to the chase, what I'm trying to say is this, I need your help. I need your advice. You know that student, the one that knew what needed to be done but could never or should I say would never come around to doing it. Well that's me *close up camera shot* . The kid, that knew the answers but would never write it, or should I say make it a reality. Believe me. I've watched enough motivational videos to know that all it takes is that drive, that belief in not only knowing that its possible. But rather that it is within reach. Yet, here I stand before you as I make my plead. I've got no more than 33 days to revise for my Alevel exams. I really want those top grades, but I'm afraid I'm not at the stage where I believe I "need" to get those grades. When I say that I mean that I'm not at the stage where " when you want to succeed as much as you want to breath, then you will be successful" I'm not there yet, I guess what I'm trying to say, is how do I get there. Every time I revise, I'm so inefficient I waste so much time. Yet, I feel as if the reason why I'm failing such a simple task, is not because I lack the time, nor because I don't have faith in myself. But because I'm afraid to put it all on the line, I am afraid to throw in all the chips. I'm afraid to invest all my time into something that might fail, I might not achieve what I want to. So I ask you a very simple question. Is it possible? This is all I need to hear, and I well bet all my chips. Invest all my resources. Whilst I cannot return your time. I would like to take this time just to say, thank you. Is it possible?

      Dear Roshane Edwards,
Thank you for being you. You sound just the way I do sometimes. - I tend to overlook all of my past accomplishments, big or small and instead I ask myself, "do I have what it takes to be the breathless winner?"
      You are awesome!
Your best efforts, not in the eyes of others but in your own eyes, I my humble opinion is all that matters. A the end of the day if you can honestly tell yourself that you tried your best and you feel honest about it then rock on! If you didn't try your best, try to take inventory of the situation and see what small steps that you can take to improve in the future. If you tried your best but you didn't get those "top grades" then consider getting some outside help, like a tutor (even teaming up with classmates is cool), mentor or RUclips what you are learning.
My favorite singer, India Arie says, "life is a journey, not a destination" and so is success.
So is it possible? Of course. You've done it many times before. You've made it this far, so nothing can break you, not even setbacks.
Let's keep inspiring each other. You rock!
      Happy studying,
      Fernandel

      Roshane Edwards Dear Roshane,
I've given your comment quite a bit of thought. And I really want to see you succeed. I think I need to address directly your "how do I get there" question (on line seven). I do not know everything and I won't profess to but I know from experience that sometimes we just feel so broken and the workload ahead seems like an impossible feat. I've been there many times. I watch the videos too and read the books, everyone says that nothing is impossible. Well sometimes it doesn't feel that way. In those trying times, what has worked for me has been to just start. I wrote on my wall in my room that leadership is "taking initiative, communicating and following through". So, because I want to be a leader and hold true to that statement on the wall, I just start whatever it is that I need to do.
So how does that apply to you? How can you get to where you want to be? Just start. Right now, as you are reading this note, on a piece of napkin or whatever, breakdown your workload for the next three weeks. Then break it down per week, per day, and even schedule a time of day. If you need help, communicate that with the resources around you and finally, just persevere (follow through). Making mistakes are okay but denying yourself the chance to try again and a chance to learn from past mistakes is not being nice to yourself. And we all need to be nice to ourselves. You only have one you. And you deserve the best.
Thank you for taking the time to read this response. I am rooting for you. Thank you for being you.
[By the way, google Marianne Williamson's quote, "Our biggest fear..." Her quote has helped me many times to stand tall in times when I feel totally broken and crushed.]
      Sincerely,
      Fernandel

Dear Fernandel Salomon. I just don't have words to show just how much I appeciate your time. Your words carry such weight. Truly, you are an inspirational and humble individual. When I read your first comment I thought several things. First was maybe I was going about this the wrong way. After I read the words " life is a journey not a destination". The thought occur to me, maybe what I was lacking isn't the drive but rather the reason. The reason, shouldn't be success, because after I achieve success what then, success should be a product along the journey, not the reason for the journey. Sometimes I feel as if I know the answer, I just need someone else to say it, you were that person. Thank you. I remember just before I went off to bed, I had thrown in the towel, I was done with revision for that day, but after reading what you said, I felt not only compelled but convicted. All of a sudden I had the urge to revise a couple more pages, gain that little more knowledge before lights were out. If your first comment was inspirational, then the value of your second cannot me priced. After reading it, I was a 'fish out of water' I realize that if I needed motivation or a reason to do something, then I simply don't want it bad enough. I realize its okay to find it hard initially, but then it will become a habit. And habits become who you are, so "start now" not then because eventually now will become then. I always thought to myself "Talent can never beat hard-work, because hard-work is talent" So often we are captivated by someone else's success and we strive to be just like them. But what about the "what if" what if, achievements lies beyond where they left off. I guess the point I'm trying to get at is its easy to compare yourself to others, but what about ones comparison to the best they can be. I find myself guilty of this often, I'm too busy marveling at someone else, I forgot to marvel at the person I might someday be. For your words, I'm eternally, greatful. I can't understand why you would donate your time to me, and that's precisely why, your words will forever carry weight. Because only when you don't need a reason, will you find yourself. Thank you. And "You are awesome" though if some of that awesomeness trickled down to me, I wouldn't complain.:)

      Roshane Edwards Dear Roshane,
You rock! Keep up the good work and continue to appreciate that person in the mirror, just as she is with her successes, faults and all. Thank you for inspiring and motivating me. Thank you for being you. Please consider motivational speaking as a vehicle to express your passion and purpose. You're an awesome speaker. Thank you for your time.
What is your purpose statement by the way? (My purpose is to be an example of not perfection, but of a person full of failures; still appreciating who I am, just as I am, with a growth mindset, taking deliberate action to give back to others. | In other words: "I'm off to rescue students from an average life.")
      Happy studying,
      Fernandel :)

Nothing you learn in high school will benefit you in real life. Watch this video-Don't stay in school by boyinaband.

      +Cameron Brown Dear Cameron,
Thank you for sharing your message. Your link is very educational. I believe that every voice matters. It is our collective efforts that will bring change in school curriculum design. Some things or rather many things in school will benefit you in real life but school curriculums have a lot of room for improvement. We can be the change that we are looking for by working to improve the current curriculum. Boyinaband recently wrote on his page that his video has inspired schools to improve their curriculums. I think that this is awesome.
Thank you for your voice. Thank you for being you.
      With Admiration,
      Fernandel
