Say whatever you will about the esthetics of this transformer, it is DEEPLY satisfying to transform. The joints are all smooth ratchets and the way the legs lock into place after extending so far just made him feel really solid. The plastic is something we can only dream of getting today. I didn't have the back pin problem so he held together really well. I was missing the head, but as a child I stilled loved this toy.
The centaur mode is a plus! I remember this one from my childhood and it was one of my favorites, specially the jet mode. Now on a second look I recognize that my imagination took a big part on liking it. :D
Hey, Baltmatrix! I managed to get this guy yesterday for only 2,5 dollars (about 2 euros), not kidding. Yes, with head and everything else. It was crazy. Yes, it was a flea market. Anyway, after watching your video here (thanks, by the way, you're always a great help to me), I realized there's a near perfect fix for that backpack problem. Here's how to do it. Step 1: In robot-mode, fold out one of the purple ape-feet (or both, for a more symmetrical look), so it's pointing straight up to the sky. Step 2: Fold out the ape-arm and purple ape-hand on the same side that you folded out the ape-foot. Step 3: Point the ape-arm and ape-hand up to the sky and position them at the side of the ape-foot. Result: The ape-arm is now almost sort of "holding" the ape-foot and the backpack STAYS UP. Fantastic. Now, it DOES put a little stress on that cockpit pin, but since it's already loose, I really don't see it as a problem. I also said it's a NEAR perfect solution, not completely perfect. But, it gets the job done. The backpack stays up and it looks quite okay. Try it out and get back to me. ;)
Love the random G1 reviews - nice to go retro every once in a while! And it makes me either remember or wonder if I have the figure (also in my storage/parents' closets). Pretty sure I've got this guy somewhere, and in good shape.
It would have been nice if the designers integrated a whole in his drone-shield-thing to be able to peg his gun into it. This way the gun could be centered in jet mode, he could also have a gun-shield and the drone could fly around and shoot enemies.
Neither Snapdragon nor Apeface ever got the attention they deserved in Transformers, and a return to the franchise for them is LONG overdue - both amazing toys and character designs!
God, I love the look of old g1's when they use pink and purple for some reason. I guess I just like the scheme of that hue for bad guys. Not being sarcastic, either.
I actually just got a Snapdragon from the TFW forums. The dude was in Portugal so it took almost 3 weeks to get but he was complete and bone white, also boxed.
I like both Snapdragon and Apeface, wish they had more of a presence in Transformers, feel like they'd make excellent bodyguards or enforcers for Galvatron, like extra muscle to compliment his usual inner circle, with Cyclonus & Scourge as his top officers. It also occurs to me that with some tweaking...Maybe Snapdragon & Apeface could be modified to create new forms for BW Megatron & Optimus Primal?
I got this figure in 87 for Christmas along with Fort Max and Sixshot(so this figure never stood a chance) on mine the backpack nosecone part was broken the pin was snapped in half which helped the figure. It would stay in jet mode and beast mode but fell right off in robot mode.
I remember Apeface being bigger than that. Then again, the last time I saw an Apeface in person, I must have been about 8. As for Snapdragon, I've seen him on Ebay, but all the decent copies are either on auction or are expensive (even a pretty yellowed one is on there for about £50, although I dunno how much it'll cost + shipping. It's complete though).
I agree, the plane mode is best and I always liked G1 Headmasters. That being said, this may be one of the worst designs I've seen in this line. That ape mode is horrible at best and the bot mode looks good but the backpack brought it down. I wish the newer Titan masters (head masters) were larger and had better paint. I have quite a few and having little bots is nice -like bringing the line back to Diaclone for a while.
The horrocons are triple changers Very difficult to find factory sealed and mint The internal bubbles yellow over time on both they where an arm like 10 years ago expect to pay 2 arms and a leg for MISB now
I like his name Apeface, BUT I actually prefer more to myself call him a "Robotic jet-GORILLAAAAAAAA" , which also a twin-headmaster, or how Hasbro call his paired subgroup with Snapdragon, "Horrorcons"! ( P. S. I like this g1 toy of Apeface and your review on this guy was cool too)
The Horrorcons are actually my favorite G1 toys. But i never understood transformers that turn into primates.. From humanoid form, to another humanoid form? uhh..okay. thats why i was so confused by optimus primal. If you were a transformer why the heck would you choose to change into what is essentially another robot mode that has slightly different proportions?
Dark Scream I'd honestly like to see something like this. I mean, they ARE making a POTP Optimus Primal. Maybe they could give him some sort of jet mode, this way they could kill two birds with one stone, give us an Apeface, and a Primal. Hell, you could even do this with a Snapdragon/Dinobot, which would be perfect since the new MP Dinobot released not to long ago, which would mean a Dinobot repaint/retool of Snapdragon would sell like hotcakes because of Dinobots popularity among older fans, and with the release of his new MP figure, he's been brought more into the light. Hell, with this kind of strategy, we could even see a new reinvention of Beast Wars.

"Aand he's kinda stupid." That part makes me laugh far more than I should he comfortable with.

this is one of the three transformers i had as a kid. still have it. head's lost to time, though.

The color scheme and plane design would fit pretty well in Blood Dragon
These man is everything :v
A triple changer
A head master
A animal former
Tarzan
He is everything
***SPASMA!!!***
Woah. The face on "Spasm" or whatever his name is, is amazingly detailed.
One of my favorite Transformers ever!
Neither Snapdragon nor Apeface ever got the attention they deserved in Transformers, and a return to the franchise for them is LONG overdue - both amazing toys and character designs!

Great shape for as old as it is. This was a cool headmaster.
Cool, great figure and video man, one of my favorites, keep the cool videos coming!!!

I had old monkeychops, ans Snapdragon. They were pretty badass.
This guy is awesome i think he is the best Head master ever.
I remember Apeface being bigger than that. Then again, the last time I saw an Apeface in person, I must have been about 8.

I have a mint box, original bubble tray and all paper work complete what I do not have is the toy, I want one but keep getting side tracked 😁
I hope this is the next Make Toys Headmaster.... Oh man. That would be awesome!!
I got him for my birthday as a child!
I like that status gimmick. "Aaand he's pretty stupid" lol
Well said, fen! Unfortunately mine has the pin problem. Just too heavy for it, I guess!

Why didn't you reviewed G1 Snapdragon?
You could make it like a centaur
The horrocons are triple changers
Very difficult to find factory sealed and mint
The internal bubbles yellow over time on both
they where an arm like 10 years ago
expect to pay 2 arms and a leg for MISB now
I'm surprised no one thought you could take Transmetal Optimus Primal & call it Apeface :P
You should make more retro figure reviews Balt!
Yup hence the name.
ive been looking for one of these for a while. what would you say the best price to pay for this figure is
Apeface did not combine with another except for the head unit
Walmart has them available again
The original Apeface's jet mode looks better than the siege version😕
I just had to pay the 100 for snapdragon, Not ideal, but It was worth it to have them together.
when you think about it apeface and snapdragon are like triple changer headmasters
Genius. Welcome to 1987
Really like this figure, but Snapdragon is better. I have them both was lucky enough to get them at a nice price with box.
That's not a backpack, that's a massive fanny pack
I still have it
Half in the Bag theme at the credits!
Cool review as always. :)
I like his name Apeface, BUT I actually prefer more to myself call him a "Robotic jet-GORILLAAAAAAAA" , which also a twin-headmaster, or how Hasbro call his paired subgroup with Snapdragon, "Horrorcons"!
( P. S. I like this g1 toy of Apeface and your review on this guy was cool too)
Yeah, it's kinda sucks
Are you do Snapdragon? It's interesting to know how he can transform.
He says Spasm for the fun of it lol
Ahh the last transformers toy I ever bought (because they didn't have Snapdragon..).
in jet mode the purple feet can fold up to form thrusters
The Horrorcons are actually my favorite G1 toys.
But i never understood transformers that turn into primates..
From humanoid form, to another humanoid form? uhh..okay.
thats why i was so confused by optimus primal. If you were a
transformer why the heck would you choose to change into what is
essentially another robot mode that has slightly different proportions?
I used to own this one!
Then Headmaster partner was called SPASMA
I like it so much I want it
I like Apeface
Hate to be a nitpicker, but Apeface's HM partner is *Spasma*, not Spasm. Sorry. =/
There was also a T. rex and a bat
This thing is not really getting better after 30 years, sigh.
IT MUST BE A MOM!! IT HAS EYES IN THE BACK OF ITS HEAD SO IT MUST BE TRUE!!!
Sad they never got an actual TR release.
The Dark Prime Reviews and Stop Motions Maybe in Power of the Primes since it is basically Combiner Wars + Titans Return 2.0
Dark Scream I'd honestly like to see something like this. I mean, they ARE making a POTP Optimus Primal.
