I'm not sure about that, with today's fuel injection technology and improved blowers, you can get 5000-6000hp from the pistons and can out accelerate the turbines after the turns while the turbines have to wind back up after de-acceleration. I was there during this race and I remember not being able to hear the atlas over the piston boats. lol.
@@kyleboyer1074who says they slow down for turns bud. Ever seen how big a skid fin is? The turbines can actually put out 4000hp all day. They are very conservatively rated. I worked on these boats.

that start was brutal, they were all over the river and late.
that was too bad that the Squire had mechanical issues and Mickey could not hold on to win. I loved the Squire Shop team.
