Will Using The Rear Brake Help You Make Those Turns From A Stop? Yes!

  • Hello RUclipsrs! A special hello to my fellow PRELOADERS! For those of you that aren't PRELOADERS yet, hit that subscribe button and become one. In this video I discuss the importance of using the rear brake while making right / left turns from a stop. Using the rear brake properly, along with other techniques will almost guarantee a successful turn.
You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
    PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
    What does PRELOAD mean?
    PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

Hello professor, I am a 68 year old student of your channel. With the approval of my loving wife of 35 years purchased a 2019 Road King in June. Passed the rider safety course in July and watched just about every practice session you have put out. Only problem is now I can’t pass up pulling into every available parking lot to practice! Thank you for sharing your life experience’s and for your service in the NYPD.

The mantra in every motorcycle skills video I’ve seen is “clutch control.” That’s still extremely important of course. But what was a revelation to me was keeping the throttle loaded and fixed - and even keeping the clutch position fixed in the friction zone, a rider can precisely moderate speed and control just with the rear break. Most skills videos just mention rear brake as a lesser component for some stability, but this gives me a new perspective and tool in my toolbox for improved confidence at slow speeds. Thanks Robert!

I haven’t been on a Harley in 30 years. I bought a ‘16 FLHTK and it’s home in the garage. Bought some cones. 15 feet apart and it’s tough to do. I have a private community and 7-12 mph in and out and in circular driveway wide turns. I will practice again. I watched many videos and I will concentrate more on rear brake and throttle control and friction zone.

I tried it on my last ride and it didn’t feel right. I'm late for the party on this vid, but I surely enjoyed it never the less. I watch you, sir, along with Jerry Palladino, MC Rider, and MotoJitsu. I call it the "College of Rider Knowledge". And after class, I go to church. The church parking lot, that is. Today, my friend David joined me for church service on his Suzuki M90. David has many, many more miles in the saddle than I do, but today I got to school him a bit on slow speed maneuvers, as in; "Stay away from that front brake!" "Head and eyes!" "Look ahead, not down!", and so on. Overall, he did well because he listened and it was FUN! We'll be going to church together as often as schedules permit, and hopefully down to practice with you next year. PRACTICE IS FUN!😎

I’m a recently returning rider(38 year gap). 2 to 3 days a week I pack up my cones and go to a local stadium parking lot to practice for 1/2 an hour. I tried this exercise and nailed the right turn every time. Left turn however I dropped the bike 3 times. The problem is turning left is stretching out my throttle arm and I seem to lose control of the friction zone and subsequently stalling . I will keep working on that !

Robert, thank you again for another awesome video to your viewers. You won't get a video from me doing push up because I already know to keep it loaded during slow speed maneuvers always covering the rear brake. Preload and keep it loaded 👍

I was trying to explain this to a friend the other day, riding a DCT right now I have no clutch lever...my rear brake is how I manager low speed. When I move up to a larger bike it should be a piece of cake now. Great video!!
