I absolutely loved Anthony Hopkins character in this movie. The Colonel had government pegged for exactly what it is. Wasteful, corrupt, intrusive, and merciless.

Everything about this movie was great, an incredible cast, the soundtrack was immense. The setting of the movie with that wonderful scenery. I would watch it endlessly 👏
The writing and acting was just pure class. I still rank this high on my all time list, though, not really a difficult task with the amount of drivel and trash released since this work of art came out.
That is why young people must learn to respect their elders. They KNOW things, they have seen things they have lived things ... so you do not get duped in the same mistakes they have. The colonel knew full well what the war means. His sons thought they knew better. Young people always think they know it better. They usually do not. This is an extremely sad story worth listening to. May you listen to your elders and may you benefit from their accumulated experiences.

This movie was so much more than just an attack on government it is a testimonial to the complexity of and ultimately the fate of us humans. None of us are all good or all bad. We are humans and flawed but at the same time capable of great and beautiful things. We are created in our makers image. As for Samuel Tristan and Alfred they are the colonels sons and each of them are not only part of him but in their own ways reflections of their father at different points of his life. Remember he is called colonel for a reason. Samuel wants to be like his father was. Tristan like his father is and in the final scene Tristan is the Colonel at the end of his life. Alfred was who the colonel wished he could be because thats the man his wife wanted and needed him to be. He sees himself in each of them and that brings him happiness but also fear and remorse.In the end they were true to who they truly were and there lives just like their deaths couldnt have been any other way. For better or worse tbey were who they were. Every character in this movie was important and the characters and those who played them were captivating.

I find the Colonel's relationship with Alfred fascinating and you just added a layer to think about.

This, when they're not engaged in some sort of Bacchanalia relabeled as Spring Break. I am beyond World Weary, & live apart from it all I can. What bothers me most are the event's that try to pull me back into the Maelstrom. That gives me the most stress of all. Like the Colonel, I want no part of "their" "civilization". Stellar actor playing a peerless part in a one of a kind film..well...maybe 2 of a kind..."A River Runs Through It" is another such movie. Brad Pitt knows how to pick 'em.
The character is put forth as one of experience and knowledge - but refusing to listen, refusing to allow one to complete a sentence is not a characteristic of a knowledgeable person.
What we see here in Anthony Hopkins is an actor who can wear a dozen hats and is impossible to typecast. Good, evil, and everywhere in between. No one watches this film and sees Hannibal Lechter. No one watches Silence of the Lambs and sees a tormented Butler or a Vampire Hunter.
Well earlier in the film Tristan is showing the book his Father wrote to try and persuade the Government to modify their treatment of the Indians so it's obviously been an issue near and dear to him for a long time and probably why Tristan was more attracted to the native girl too it's part of his spirit and a cause his Father instilled in him if he felt obligated to write an entire book on the topic which subsequently was ignored too apparently.
The people who want war never have to fight them. It's always the poor and working class that are coerced or fooled into fighting for the elites. I say that as a Veteran.

The way he speaks about the US Government then and it's "policy" towards Indians then is exactly how I feel about my own Government in Ireland now and it's policy towards the unborn child, again there is little to convince me that it has advanced in its common sense or humanity.

What we see here in Anthony Hopkins is an actor who can wear a dozen hats and is impossible to typecast. Good, evil, and everywhere in between. No one watches this film and sees Hannibal Lechter. No one watches Silence of the Lambs and sees a tormented Butler or a Vampire Hunter.
This is where young men should listen to old men.
Great movie don't doubt that
Well earlier in the film Tristan is showing the book his Father wrote to try and persuade the Government to modify their treatment of the Indians so it's obviously been an issue near and dear to him for a long time and probably why Tristan was more attracted to the native girl too it's part of his spirit and a cause his Father instilled in him if he felt obligated to write an entire book on the topic which subsequently was ignored too apparently.
The people who want war never have to fight them. It's always the poor and working class that are coerced or fooled into fighting for the elites. I say that as a Veteran.
