Robert is being courteous and professional to his interviewers that clearly (apparently) did not do their homework with the pronunciation of her last name. It wouldn't be professional (or even nice) to throw your interviewer "under the bus" because of their mistake. I am shocked that Diane Sawyer, of all people, would have made that mistake, though.

Not denying her role in his life as a positive influence but she had it “easier” because they met after he had gotten sober and more or less gotten himself on track already. I feel he should also give credit to his ex wife when talking about his recovery. Since she’s the one who put up with him when he was at his worst, tried to give him the support needed and raised their child mostly on her own.

So translation he didn't care for his son or his ex's who did it all for him. susan would have never put put with his behavior and nor did she have to. But she doesn't deserve full credit.
