  • Testing an armature in 4 steps.
    1. Set your multimeter to ohms setting
    2. Test each bar to the shaft - there should be no continuity.
    3. Test each bar next to each other - all values should be very close
    4. Test each bar 180 degrees or across from each other - all values should be very close
If you fail any of these tests then the armature needs to be replaced.
    Thanks for watching.

Nice, straight to the point. Could someone explain why it does not appear to be relevant to test continuity between the shaft and the bigger bars at the bottom? Many thanks.

is the oms reading the only thing that makes sound in multi-meter?

Realy hope someone can help me.
When i test a armature commutator i set multimeter to 20M ohms then 1 wire on shaft and other wire on commutator, then get reading. Is this mean there is a short between ground and commutator?
When set it on lower ohms i not get any reading. Just when set it on 20M ohms and 200M ohms i get reading.

There should not be a reading between the shaft and the commutator bars. If there is then there is a short.

Does this work on generator alternators?

No because they are built differently. I have several videos on testing generators. Check them out if you can.
