I am so happy that you have done this band. Finally, they are criminally underrated one of the best bands to ever exist on this planet. Thank you so much. I can die now. Happy man.
We Are is very cleverly mixed to give the impression that it is in 3, I heard it the same way the first time. If you listen to it live, the triplet feel becomes much more obvious.
Very happy to discover these videos. i have always have a hard time hearing these complex rhytms, your videos does a great job understanding them. Thank you
So glad you covered Vool, they are one of my favorites! Sivan Arbel sounds great so I'll def check her stuff out! Oh and I would love if you analyzed anything by Car Bomb and The Contortionist!
Love it! I've always been perplexed by the changes in this song. I'm grooving along (in 4) for the first minute and a half and then it suddenly after "stare into the light" feels like it shifts to something entirely different. I feel like this whole album is a mindfuck for drummers. I've listened to it hundreds of times and know every song well, but I absolutely cannot play to any of it, haha!
Firstly , Karnivool. What a band ! So many gems they have in their catalog. Would like to see more of their analysis . Secondly, I came accross this channel earlier today, and absolutely enjoying the content and the style of presentation . Kudos !
Same !! I spent weeks or ever months feeling this song in 3/4, before seeing them dance in 12/8 in the music-video, and then stumbling upon a live version without the blurring 8ths-playing hihat/shaker... Anyway, amazing video as usual, and many thanks for explaining this this mind-wrecking fill from one of my favorite albums !!
Finally someone to acknowledge my long-time heroes. Loved their music right from the moment I listened to Themata for the first time. Thanksm Yogev, for this feature and the recommendation to those who didn't know the band yet!

Bro. You're the MAN for this one! So glad I found you through the Meshuggah videos you've done! "We Are" is such a fun song and I've been a fan of Karnivool since Themata! Great work!
A few weeks ago, I had this song playing very faintly in my car when I turned it on. I could barely hear it and couldn't tell what song it was, but I absolutely loved the 4/4 groove. I brought the volume up and realized I'd been listening to it in 3/4 for 9 years. It's such a different feel. At least you didn't take 9 years to hear it haha. (It even took me some relistening/training to get the 1 beat right)
I had the best time learning the song "Change" from Sound Awake. There are some really tricky parts in that song and it is so fulfilling when you nail it. The Caudal Lure took a very long time. Took forever to count that one. I still can't play that one 100% yet lol.
I didn't get into this record quite as much as Sound Awake, but We Are is so SO good. Easily up there with their best songs. I was recommended Karnivool around 2011, it was a slow burn for me getting into their sound but We Are is the song that eventually hooked me when it came out. Thanks for this analysis!
Firstly, I love Karnivool...either my top band, or in the top 3. Secondly...Shwesmo...holy shit, what a project. I'm looking to make a dark prog color bass EP soon, and this is much more in line with what I'm hearing in my head than anything else I've ever heard. Thank you for this!
YES, my request! Or at least one of the people requesting this. Thanks so much for doing this and for responding as well! Don't worry about not picking up on the rhythm immediately. I've played drums for over 20 years and didn't catch the correct rhythm for YEARS until I head the live version. Such a fantastic band, I'm not surprised you'd be into them considering you've already covered Tool, Meshuggah, Porcupine Tree, and Opeth. Plenty of material for you to analyze, I'm sure. I actually asked Drew Goddard (Karnivool guitarist) on Facebook after learning about the confusion since I initially believed the song was in 3/4 when I first heard it. He confirmed it's 4/4. In my opinion though, the bridge ("let's reset it all") with Steve's stack/china hits is so obviously in 3/4 it throws you off. Drew also gave credit to Jon's bass hitting the backbeat perfectly which further sold the illusion that the song is in 3/4.
