  • Today I break down the difference in a stationary guide to maintain layers with thickness and volume in the hair vs a traveling guide that creates movement all over with texture and shorter layers. What do you prefer? Let me know in the comments!

Fantastic- thank you Summer! I wish the most stylists new how to layer so evenly. It’s the biggest challenge when I go to the salon. You are so talented and explain so well.

Layers series please! They way you explain things is just great, our minds think alike and that’s something I never had in school. Plus I’m left handed so not only did I have to try and figure what the instructor meant, but then I had to try and figure out how I did that left handed, and layers has been the hardest thing for me. Blonding and color my brain gets, I can formulate the hell out of a color correction. layering a haircut not so much. 😂

Yes too series! I struggle with when to utilize a layering technique. Do I go with curve of head? Do I do a concave layer? Pulling hair forward and cutting layers for curly? When to choose what way, also I like to learn difference between horizontal, diagonal, vertical. For sure!

    Summer,
Thank you for that tutorial! When I go back to my stylist and say I want a stationary laying will she know what I mean? Is that how it is taught in school or do they have other terms for that style. My hair is thin around front but thicker and wavier in back and I should do the stationary according to this video.
    Thanks a bunch!!

Many times near the ear, stylists change cutting style and direction. This creates an obvious disconnect Between the side and back. It's like two different haircuts on one head. Every time I get home from a cut I have to fix It so the side gracefully meets with the back.

I'm not a hairdresser, but this is SO interesting! Thank you for showing us the difference... so cool to see on either side of the mannequin like that! I love the look of the traveling guide side a LOT better than the stationary one, but I have thinner hair in the front than the back, and it's also fine. I'd love to see a video where the layering looks like the traveling guide one, but is for my type of hair. Is some of it dependent on length?
I tried over and over again to explain what I wanted to my super nice stylist I had years ago (I brought pictures, and even drew pictures!) but she kept giving me that same cut as the stationery guide side in your video and I absolutely hated how the front top layer was longer than the back top layer. I finally had to stop going to her out of frustration... I even tried to cut it myself and that was a disaster, lol! Won't be doing that again! Then I found an artist like you that could do it, but he moved away 😢 and I've been unable to find anyone else that can do it. He did not do any point cutting either, which I think was so much better for my super fine hair. Dang I miss him!

Would the traveling guide layers work also on 2B-2C thin curly hair? I'm thinking to try a modified version and keep the bottom straight with no layers, to maintain thickness, and then from ears up use this traveling technique. I'm looking to grow out my short layered curly haircut and hoping for a cut that would look good both straight and curly. Total amateur here :D Would love to see more from this series! You explain everything so nicely!

Both Type cuts are very pretty!! But..when get you to the ear you change how you were doing it. I realize front/ear area can be thinner, but mostly there's just not as much because the ear takes the place of hair. Ha. Why isnt the side of the haircut(aka. Ear)treated like it belongs with the rest of the hair on a round head? So at time,, 14:00-14:40
You start not cutting as much and skip over what you would have cut from all the previuos sections.
So at,, 15:00 the disconnect can kinda be seen,, then at 15:15 its obvious the side is not gracefully connected to the rest.
Then when you go to blend it in..you decide not to..but its def not quite right.
Can you clear this up for me?
Am I just being really freaking annoying ,,,lol?! But seriously every time I get a cut, I have to go home and blend that side section into the rest/back of my hair.
Is this common Like, am I the only one that sees the disconnect? Im not a stylist, but i feel it could be fixed/included into the whole head during the cut..?

Hi Summer! I have straight fine hair, but I have a lot of it. Can I still do the Traveling Guide? Hopefully, in the next month, I can get my hair cut, and I want to get it cut to my shoulders. However, I want to keep my sidebangs long (tomboyish side tails) with my curtain bangs and then have my bob layered from behind my ears back. Does that make sense? LOL
The traveling guide look so cool and the layering is really nice so I wanna do it really bad haha
