Possibly old physics, used to play a lot. After hitting a koopa out of there shell there is a minimum amount of time you have to wait before you can bounce off of it. The indicator is trying to say go wide. Because of how fast you are falling, and activating the thwomp is moving the shell up, you are moving through the shell in the same place you "would" bounce if enough time has passed. That's why your line ups were sometimes working. When you let go of jump, you fell slower and changed thwomp activation.

A few things I noticed. The large red koopa shell has a lot more side to side movement in the original level compared to your recreated level. The times you were successful, Toddette's foot was just above the corner of the p-switch block. It seems you were actually higher when you let go of jump in those last few attempts. Thanks Panga!
Correct. When the shell goes through the block that it's supposed to bounce back from, it's going up and right. When it works, the shell is going right or down and right. I don't know why it goes through the block when it's going up and right, it could be because it hits the block higher, or less of the shell hits the block, or if it is that way because the shell is going up, or some janky Nintendo math. So, if you let go of jump at the right time, like Panga did in the end, you'll hit the shell when it's on it's maximum height instead of while it's lower and it's still going up. I guess the level creator was just super consistent and didn't notice it. That's why it's good to get other people to test your level, they don't have your muscle memory :)

I can definitely relate to Panga about that giant red shell lol. There must be something behind the game coding as to why some tricks and movements only work on certain obstacles and mechanisms way more than others

My guess for why it why it wasn't working is that the set up is sending the shell up to you rather than you falling down to it (since the first shell jump is just falling and it worked every time). In order for you to bounce off the shell you have to be falling rather than rising, and holding jump here means that you hit the shell almost exactly at the peak of your jump. If the physics in the level are different than they are now, then that means the tiniest change to falling speed or jump velocity would be enough to mess with the timing and let you do the trick consistently
My hypothesis about the semisolid is that the horizontal positioning needs to be fairly precise for the reclaim and the vertical lines affect the perception of where Mario needs to be. So through Panga's visual processing ability the semisolid did affect the trick indirectly.

while watching the video look at the shell opening when landing on it on failed attempts it was facing slightly left and on successful attempts the shell opening is centered. Great video.
Whilst the description does say "full jumps" you can achieve this by not holding jump. If you hold one of the bumpers then it forces you to do a max height jump and thats probably what the creator was doing
Holding jump makes you fall ever so slightly slower. Which could account for the jank. The creator of the level could have a habit of letting go of the jump button as Mario falls and thus never noticed the jank. And since this level is uploaded in 2020 updates and patches could have changed the physics to remove the jank from the setup. This is obviously all speculation but it's my best guess as to what happened.

are you supposed to go back to the cloud platform to jump on the shell? there are two indicators there that make me think the shell is supposed to follow the track back to the cloud platform then again to get the momentum back
I think its not your x coordinate. I think its the y. In the editor, you got it to work consistently when you moved the ledge up. I think that the setup is giving you some difeerent jump heights and its changing whether you bounce off or through the shell. Youre not getting max height jumps some times.
If I understand this correctly, I'm pretty sure the shell was too high to detect the wall and trigger the SMM 1-up trick hack. The bottom pixel or so of the shell should be below the top of the wall so that the game detects the wall to the side when you kick the shell, but the shell still clears the wall after being kicked.
You can not tell me Panga hasn't played that first level before. Either he "meh"d it before, it's stolen, or that level is so generic that it's indistinguishable.
I feel like having the semisolid in the bg is making you inconsistent, messing up your lineup which is why you were failing more often with it in place and in the level itself, otherwise it is definitely possible physics changes have some effect and in your rebuild you seem to get less height going into the on/off wall
