- With fears of the coronavirus spreading, here' s a DIY hand sanitizer spray, to help protect your against viruses. As I say in the video, this spray should not take the place of proper hand-washing.
#coronavirus #handsanitizer #DIYhandsanitizer
Rubbing alcohol is hard to find, as the stores are running out of supplies. As of today, I have found some here bit.ly/3cQjGkI This is 99%, which is the BEST option. I cannot stress this enough. I wrote 90% on my bottle in the video, but it's actual. 99% that you want to try to find.
If you cannot find rubbing alcohol, you may be able to find grain alcohol in some states at the liquor store. But it needs to be 151 proof.
I also want to be crystal clear that we cannot JUST rely on essential oils for protection against viruses. While science has shown some of them to be anti-viral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal, in the instance of a serious virus such as COVID - 19, it would be very unwise to think that using essential oils exclusively can or will give you the protection that you need.
Here are the wonderful organic aromas essential oils that I use shrsl.com/25vo7
2-ounce dark glass sprayer bottles that I love amzn.to/2ID4lGj
Recipe:
1 cup of rubbing alcohol 70 or 99% or grain alcohol (151 proof)
1 tbsp hydrogen peroxide
1/3 cup of water if using 99% alcohol, 1/4 cup of water if using 70% alcohol
1 tsp vegetable glycerine or aloe vera gel
30 drop of essential oil of your choice.
I used 5 drops of: Rosemary, sweet orange, cinnamon, cedarwood, and 10 drops of Eucalyptus.
Instructions
Make sure you sanitize your tools and counter before starting.
Pour all the ingredients into a measuring cup and mix well
Pour into dark glass sprayers. You need to use dark glass (or plastic) as the opacity will protect the formula from degrading.

The tutorial starts at 4:50. Thanks Sophie.
Thanks, Sophie! I've been making your other one for several years but I appreciate the updated one.
Love your clear instructions for these DYI’s and your wonderful teaching during them. Thanks 🙏🏻. New subscriber here‼️
Thank you for all your suggestions and help!
My pleasure!!
Very helpful and I LOVE your English accent. Cheers Luv! One minor point, I saw a related video of a doctor saying that unless your using boiling water (don't do it) it doesn't matter what temperature you wash your hands, only boiling water kills germs, the soap does the rest. And he said just basic soap is as good as anti bacterial soap.
Thanks again.
Jaye from Chicago USA
Thank you Sophie! I so appreciate this and your previous video on sanitizers!

Thank you Debbie! I appreciate YOU!
How do you make it gel like the store has? Great video.
Thanks Sophie! ❤️❤️❤️
Great video Sophie thank you
No thank YOU Lorraine!! Let's keep each other healthy!!
Thanks Sophie!! Always great videos!! Can I use Aloe Vera juice instead of the gel?
if it's food grade then no
I’m flying in a couple hours and have your DIY wipes with me. I wish I had the time to make this!
you'll be fine with those wipes! Stay well
I just used the last recipe in a spray bottle although the aloe was difficult to deal with so I'm interested to see this one
yes - this is thinner
Hey just so you know 190 proof Everclear also works! Just as long as it's total 60% by volume (meaning total amount made has 60% alcohol). Thanks for video!
Hi Sophie thank you 😊
I'm going to try this recipe and going to make cinnamon and orange one!!!! with the aloe vera gel
Thank you!!! I just ordered the ingredients! Just don't leave it in your car because alcohol could explode if it's super hot outside!
OMG - so true! Thanks for the warning.
Can we use almond oil instead of vegetable glycerin?
I love that you give some info on cheaper essential oils. Some of us don't know why some essential oils are so much more expensive than others.
Odette I'm so glad you found that useful! I have tons of videos on essential oils if you're curious to learn more!
@@SophieUlianoGorgeouslyGreen I almost watched all of your videos ;)
Sophie I have the alcohol but can you tell me about the hydrogen peroxide. I have hair peroxide 6 % and 12 % would that do. What a time we are living in. Take care 😘
awesome video ! watching in 2024
Thank you !!!!
Thank YOU!
Hi
When I add essential oil to this recipe I found the essential oils floating or rather separating out from the solution. can u help resolve this issue.
Hello! Can you use fragrance oil instead of essential oil?
Is there anything besides cinnamon that can be used? Some people are very sensitive to that scent.
Hi sophie i tried the linked for the alcohol but it said out of stock. So my question is what substitute can i use now since i dont have the isopropyl alcohol? Thanks
You just need to keep searching - ugh!!!! Every time I put a new link in, it keeps selling out. But don't give up.
Can you make one for dogs paws for after a walk? I’ve been washing their feet before coming inside w warm soap and water in jugs
I use warm soapy water and an old towel for my fur babies!
Can I use vitamin E instead of glycerin?
Can you use Witch Hazel in place of the Alcohol and still use Aloe Vera Gel to be affective? NI can’t use the alcohol and peroxide because it is too harsh on my skin.
You have to use the alcohol to make it effective.
Thank you
No THANK YOU Sherry!!
Can you use fragrance oil?
Why do you need to add water??? It dilutes it , right??
Hi Sophie! What's a good hand soap for the home?
I would just use any that is antibacterial. And if you can't find that, just use any soap. It's more about just washing well with and thoroughly with hot water for over 20 seconds.
GOOD video and you have such great neck.what do you do to get so strong neck?do you you go to the gym now when there is the coronavirus? Here in Stockholm it spreads quickly
Marie - I'm working out at home these days, just to be extra careful!! I credit my yoga practice for my strong neck!!
@@SophieUlianoGorgeouslyGreen please please make a video about that.to show us.i had cancer no thyroid now cured and ha borrelia and tbe.so i am stying put inmy flat and 64years old..and i am working from home
Why are you using more water with the 70% alcohol than with the 90% alcohol? Shouldn't those numbers be reversed? Otherwise it's diluting the 70% more than 90%? 1/3 cup is more than 1/4 cup.
You are absolutely right - corrected in recipe in description.
Hi, what is the make of your electric kettle? Thank you!
Seriously? Any kettle will do
I like THAT red kettle. You’re obviously not a kitchen connoisseur.
I use polish grain alcohol 96% (192 proof).Much better than isopropyl alcohol for skin.
Thank you for posting this, Sophie. Quick question...if a store has microbial wipes out for its customers, will these wipes be effective against the corona virus?
It depends what brand it is and the ingredients that are in it.
Sophie Uliano Thanks. That would be difficult to determine as they are placed in containers (containing no info) for the public to use. I will need to check at the customer service desk to see what they know.
Can I leave out the vegetable glycerin and just use Witch Hazel, Aloe Vera Gel, and the Essential Oils and it still be effective?
You can use other agents to moisturize, but you cannot omit the alcohol.
Thanks Sophie~Curious if witch hazel would work instead of the 70% rubbing alcohol.Thanks.
no, it won't.
Here's my question- do you have issues mixing the aloe vera with the alcohol? I'm finding that when I add Aloe, it forms a goo and doesn't mix well.
Hey! You have to pour aloe vera in very slowly, while mixing quickly... It's best to use an emersion blender, or regular blender just don't use a whisk...I had the same problem first time I made it! Lol I just made another batch last night doing it like I said... It came out perfect!! I had my other half pour it in while I was mixing to make sure they both got done correctly as it's sometimes hard to do both your self especially if your new to diy products. Hope that helps!
Also, the reason why you don't want to use whisk is because the aloe send to stick and get caught in it and that makes it goopy as well.
Eric Johnson yes!! Thank you!
Doesn't using this rubbing alcohol so much damage your/our skin?
is there anything that you can use instead of rubbing alcohol? i ask because here in Australia people have gone stupid and i can't find any anywhere im asking in relation to the wipes as well
It's also almost impossible to find in stores here too. There is nothing that works as well as alcohol, and we can't be wishy washy here because of the virus we are dealing with. Sorry, but that's just the way it is.
@@SophieUlianoGorgeouslyGreen its ok was just curious thank you sophie :)
I have a bottle of Rocky Mountain Oils Sacred Immunity Strength. It contains clove, cinnamon, lemon, orange, oregano, mandarin, thyme, rosemary, nutmeg, ginger, and frankincense. Would 30 drops of that work as well?
TOTALLY!!
@@SophieUlianoGorgeouslyGreen Whew! Thank you!💜
So, oils and water don’t mix well, how can I stick them together?? Thank you for the awesome recipe 😘
Essential oils are not real oil
Use glue
There's some conflicting info between this and last video. Last video (wipes) says 70% alcohol is better than hand washing (soap and water). This video (spray) says 90% alcohol won't work if hands aren't washed first (soap and water). So... could people make the wipes with 90% instead of 70% alcohol instead of washing with soap and water, and have the best of both worlds?
Steph RS CDC says the BEST thing to do to kill germs is wash hands with soap and water.
Hi Sophie, I just found some 90% Alcohol .Will this be effective for making hand sanitizers?
Why use water at all?
Use grain alcohol/everclear. Best stuff.😘🙏
Yes - I have heard that EverClear vodka is a decent alternative if you cannot find rubbing alcohol.
It has to be at least 60% / 120 in California that is highest allowed. But if you get higher yeah.
Where do you buy Aloe gel or vegetable glycerin?
I bought some at Walmart.
You can also find both an Amazon and in most health food stores.
I would really like to use this recipe in my fog machine to spray/disinfect the weight equipment in my gym BUT I am afraid the vegetable glycerine or the aloe vera will leave a sticky surface on my gym equipment. Can you please give me your thoughts or can you think of any other ingredient to use instead? Thank you for your time!
The glycerin and aloe is only a moisturizer for the skin. Just omit that ingredient.
All I have on hand is vodka can I still use
Sure if you want to sanitize your organs.
That's nice but I don't have and now I can't buy half of the ingredients. Why nobody post sanitizer without aloe vera?????
You can use vegetable glycerin too. The only reason for the Aloe or glycerin is because the alcohol is very drying on your skin. You can omit it all together and just used location on your hands from time to time to combat the dryness.
Lotion
Is it okay to use a plastic bottle??? Thanks.
Totally - I just didn't because it's harder to sterilize with boiling water. But it's totally fine, you sterilizing it anyways with the alcohol so you are fine.
@@SophieUlianoGorgeouslyGreen followed your recipe. Have made several spray bottles (small to medium)for the hands. Thanks so much!!!!!!!!
I’m not sure why yours is so liquid because the one I’ve been making for three years now comes out just like the store brought.
I wanted this to be a spray, but I'd love to see your recipe for a more viscus consistency!!
Indigenous Chippewa yes this is definitely more watery than any video that I’ve seen
I love your sanitizing spray, but I'm a little confused. In your video you said to dilute the 90% alcohol with 1/4 cup of water and the 70% with 1/3 of a cup, but you also said to dilute the 90% with more water. Since the 90% has a higher alcohol content shouldn't it be diluted more? I want to make sure I'm getting the measurements correct.
Reba Wilks I was wondering about that as well 😊
I am so sorry for the confusion. I have corrected it in the actual recipe in the description!
Thank you Sophie!
Can't find alcohol anywhere.pls make hand sanitizer or hand cleaning with hand soap on to go ... thanks you in advance
Did you check the links below the video in the description?
Yes but expensive ..and I have a lot of hand soap kill 99.9% and I want to use it but have no idea how to use it on to go .. specially I want to make it for my husband at work he touched a lot of things everyday
@@npm1421 carry bottles of water and wet soap up and rinse
what to eat at night for cravings.I get so hungry at night
Marie - I try REALLY hard to not eat past 8pm (I fast for at least 12-14 hours everyday), but if I HAVE to eat, I start with a BIG glass of water, and then go for the healthiest option!!
Do you need the 1 tbsp hydrogen peroxide?
If you can't find it, it's not 100% necessary, but it is the recipe following the guidelines of the World Health Organization.
Peroxide is just to prevent mold from forming in your solution. It does not factor in disinfecting.
My favorite video at the moment
Thank you.
👍❤️👏💐👌
What was the purpose of the hydrogen peroxide
in can inactivate bacterial spores in the product. Just an extra precaution.
@@SophieUlianoGorgeouslyGreen My podiatrist has warned us against using hydrogen peroxide on the skin. He told us this prior to the Coronavirus. Please see the link on Healthline. I love your recipes but I’m eliminating that one ingredient. Please check out the info then decide if you need to update the recipe. www.healthline.com/health/hydrogen-peroxide-skin#1
@@CynDWatson You should not use Hydrogen Peroxide on your skin to wash hands or clean them - especially to protect from covid. The amount used within the W.H.O. recipe is insignificantly small and only intended to sterilize the sanitizer you made within the bottle before you start using it. It's not intended to protect from covid. It's considered an inactive ingredient. Technically, you should not use the homemade hand sanitizer for at least 72 hours after bottling to allow the tiny amount of peroxide time to kill any possible contaminants. Be warned that leaving this ingredient out of the mix could impact its efficacy. Also the resulting alcohol content is based on including the peroxide - so leaving it out would alter this result. You would have to change the entire recipes ratio to compensate for leaving it out.
Using tea tree oil
I love it!
My Bell is on but I still don't get half of my notifications it just doesn't work that way anymore for some reason..... but thank you for your videos 💜💚💟💛💙
That is so annoying! What is UP with this. So many people are not getting the notifications.
@Sophie Uliano, it’s YT, they are screwing with everyone. Anything good or positive is a problem with them.
Not a good recipe as does not contain sufficient amount of alcohol and the hydrogen peroxide is not needed.
Also cinnamon essential oil should be used topically only by a clinical aromatherapist as it is a potential skin irritant.
Rosemary can also be an issue depending on medication a person is on, the age of the user and health condition.
Eucalyptus contains 1,8 cineole which can have contraindications for children, the elderly and specific medical conditions.
A Great hospital grade 70% alcohol Hand Santizer Spray would be:
# 34.05 mls 100% Isoprophyl Alcohol or Ethanol
#12.99 mls Distilled Water
# 1.46 mls Glycerine
# 1.5mls of essential oil
This makes a 50ml sprayer bottle.
Alternatively:
# 164mls 100% Isoprophyl Alcohol or Ethanol.
# 74ml Distilled Water
# 4.61ml Glycerine
# 3% total of an essential oils blend which is about 193 drops of essential oils or 7.5 mls essential oil.
This makes a 250ml ammount
I wonder if there are any videos in the entire RUclips Universe, that doesn't ask me to Like, Subscribe and tell me to hit the bell icon!! It's getting really really old.
Maybe she's still new?
I know youtubers with 1M subs that never say that line lol.
@kauigirl808, I’ll bet that wasn’t the case in their early days when trying to get the channel up and running. Monetization is what it’s all about, in business, to make some bux. With YT this can be an issue depending what your vids content is all about. De-platforming, nebulous community guidelines, strike counts, censorship or complete removal and loss of revenue are a way of life or death on this platform.
The owners of this site prefer you march in lockstep with their agenda or else you’re banned!
Sad and very un American.
do you use mask against corona virus
I have some masks, but would only use them to travel at this point. Just don't know enough about it.
Diluted
Get to the point. Too much talking. Seriously.

I believe you had good intentions when you posted this video. But this recipe is dangerous! Why do you insist on giving advice on something you are not an expert? First you got the fractions wrong. And even after you fixed that, the recipe with 70% alcohol is still not enough to kill the virus. Please, if you care about you audience, remove this video from RUclips. Your carelessness could be costing people their lives.
