The Secrets of the 2nd Generation FE Ford & Some Custom Bling for the 1968 Mercury Budget Build

  • The 1968 Mercury Park Lane #BudgetBuild for the #NoNameNationals continues with a little custom lettering on the Intake Manifold before installing it back on that 68 Merc. So I decided to give away one of my secrets in how to make an engine "pop" with a little shine that emphasizes the little details that make this 390 Ford FE Big Block Ford a work of art. All you need to do this yourself..... is a standard Sharpie Marker and a little time to kill.
    While I'm doing it, I talk about some of the History of the FE (Ford/Edsel) Ford Engine family, where it came from, and why it is what it is, as well as how it does what it does with this goofy design that was later replaced by the 385 Series (429-460) Big Block Fords.
    Now there are 2 other FE Fords that I didn't mention in this, the1st gen FE's. Those are actually a lot different than the 2nd Generation and actually have their roots in the MEL (Mercury/Edsel/Lincoln) Engine Family, as they are a full "Wedge & Full Head" design. But do to EXTREME oiling problems they were short lived and quickly replaced with the standard 360-428ci FE that is commonly found in Fords from the mid 60's through the late 70's.

    I have one of those S intakes. The F100 has a T intake with the egr port on the carb mounting surface. The S will flow better than the Edelbrock performer and the old Weiand that I have. Also advancce the cam 4* if you are running a stock cam.

      Oh yeah, that's the secret of these FE's..... they are dang good right out of the box. You just have to tweak them a bit to unlock what the politicians and bean counters put in them and WHAM! you got yourself one heck of a Hot Rod!
      I think the only thing you can't get out of an FE.... is mileage. If you hit double digits on them, you are doing pretty dog gone good.... lol.

    They are a good engine for blow through carb superchargers and turbochargers. The average 390 can handle 700-800 hp with boost. The 410 with the 4.05 bore and 3.98 stroke like a nice blow through centrifugal or twin turbos. Cross bolt the mains and fill the block with Devcon and iron grind powder and they can do 900-1000 hp. The LS has a great deal of similarity in architecture. If CGI iron had been available in 1958 they could have been used stronger like 2500 + hp with the Cammer. The block was light for that usage. But 500-700 is not a big deal on a street engine.

    You’re intake is a little later than the one I have that I am going to use it codes to be made in 1964 and it’s stamped with the 4 SE the difference I noticed is what I believe was for taking the crank cases pressure in the back of the intake is a port coming out I believe it must be what was the pvc of the time the engine is a 390 fe and the valve covers are originally thunderbird

    As far as the oddball engine options I prefer the ih 266-392, the ford fe, and the sbo and big block Oldsmobile engine family.

    You mentioned the old ford 260, I remember as a kid right up through my early 20s piles of those being pulled and junked, same with many 351 windsors.
    Everyone was getting 351 clevelands, and big blocks, 428s were plentiful and affordable.
    429s were an option if you worked or new someone at a good machine shop.
    302s back then were a dime a dozen, but many prefered the 289.
    Funny how time has made alot of the old "throw away engines desirable now.

      No such thing as a 270. Earliest 90º V8's are 221 and 260 inches. Clevelands are not big blocks; they are 335-series.

      @@413x398 Bit of a brain fart in that one as I was concentrating on other things, yeah it was the 260 not 270. Only place I've seen them is in the early Mustangs

      They were 260 v8 not 270, ( I've been dealing with small block Mopars recently just got 273, 260, scrambled)

    Wasn't that Ford who supplied Studebaker with the 289w procharger for the Golden Hawk or something, and/or a Packard 352 , which I think they got from Ford because some of those were leftover from Packard, you see a 352 in a Studebaker it usually had Packard on it. I remember something like that from somewhere...

      Actually it's a little bit the other way around and it actually comes from Allis Chalmers (tractors) that were closely tied in with Studebaker & Raymond Loewy (the head designer & engineer for Studebaker). Ray designed the procharger & Roots Blower for Allis Chalmers' diesel engines back in 1947 along with the 1950-51 "Bullet Nose" Studebaker with the 232 ohv V8 (that's also designed for boost but the standard fuel of the day was so low octane that they dropped the compression to 7-1 until fuel technology could catch up). With the Super Sales of the Bullet Nose, Studebaker bought Packard for their engine factories and that's when you started to see the "Packard Name" in the Studebaker, and the Packard cars started to look like Studebakers with different trim. (Packard fans called it the Devils Deal because it pretty much did away with Packard as a company)
      Skp to the Ford connection
      Robert McNamara was the head of design for Ford at this time (a member of "The Wiz Kids" design team that was going to take Ford into the future after the unexpected death of Edsel Ford - Henry's only child). He was buying those from Studebaker/Loewy to boost the FoMoCo line up with the Y-Block that his team had developed around that technology & in the mid 50's gas companies where standardizing Octane Ratings so (production) cars could start getting faster.
      Long story cut short with a lot of stuff left out.....
      It was more of a collaboration than a competion between Studebaker/Packard (STP) & FoMoCo McNamara (Mack) was buying the stuff from STP that helped keep the lights on at Studebaker. The Studebaker/Packard V8 shared displacements with a lot of other engines, but where still their own design, and honestly they are more GM than Ford in these years.... as the Y-Block, MEL, & FE's are all "Y-Blocks" (skirted blocks like the Chevy LS of today).
      Fun side notes to all this.....
      Robert McNamara was Pres of Ford when Kennedy (JFK) hired him to take on the Russian's in Cuba for us. Later he was ordering the dropping of bombs over Cambodia and North Vietnam.
      Raymond Loewy came back to Studebaker to design the Avanti and Studebaker became the worlds fastest production car and with that, NASA hired him for the Apollo project, and he helped us land on the Moon!

    I thought the older Ford 352's were a FE too, at least that's what I was told or read somewhere.., I figured you'd know for sure. And talking about those old Y blocks, a lot of old drag racers liked them purty good cause they could do a whole lot with them and get a lot out of them, mainly HP and torque. Anywho, good stuff buddy, I like the info and stuff, kind of a brush up because I forgot a lot. You know where Ford got the idea for the 352 don't you? Well I don't think Ford copied it but it come from Packard, Ford bought the rights and whatever for the 352 when Packard was going under.

      Well hello there Doug, great to see you again! I was actually thinking of you while I was doing this. It kinda brings back the old model car days as I was lettering that in.... lol. Yeah the 330 -352 are the 1st Gen FE's and are the ones that got the hard-core reputation of being bad oilers. The 2nd Gen (360-428) corrected a lot of that... but still have their issues with over oiling the top as well. As for the Packard connection.... no I didn't know that. I know Studebaker merged with Packard and those 2 are VERY similar in design, but never seen the connection to Ford with it.

      @@BareRoseGarage I have a 352 in my '59 Ford Fairlane 500. I replaced the 2 barrel intake (Anyone need a good boat anchor?) with a 4 barrel manifold from a '62 Thunderbird 390. I also used a cam for a '62 t-bird 390. I can see the difference between the cams. The T-bird cam definitely has more lift and duration. That 352 really delivers some power now. BTW: The Studebaker V8 is more closely related to the 1949 Cadillac V8 (aka "Kettering" engine). The Packard 352 looks like a Studebaker, except that the engine is a lot longer. Both engines had an intake manifold that did not have coolant passages, and did not form part of the head.

    Hey BareRose. Just found you and may post a video here or two. I'm about to do this same intake job to a 1968 Ford Galaxie. When you were talking about the intake codes... Mine has a -F. C8AE-9425-F and also has the S. I've looked around and it might be a GT intake? Curious if you might know. Thanks.

      Thanks for stopping by Sonnystovall! The stuff I used here was the ACE Hardware "Rust-Stop" brand. I use it quite a bit and it's a lot cheaper than the others. Also it holds up REALLY well for the price. But when I clear it, I clear it with Rustolium 2X Clear (only the 2x brand), it's the only one (including actual engine paint Clear) that doesn't yellow out with the heat.

      A good machinist can do wonders with them, and it depends on the Heads you have. There's a guy on here that goes by "Ed's Machine" that is actually an expert machiniest that specialized in the FE heads. If you can swing it, he'll unlock all the potenial in any of these FE Heads & Intakes. Check him out, he's one heck of a great guy!
