i always thought Captain Jack was a pastiche of william russel Both being in charge kinda companions.
I consider much of what is classed as padding to be character developing, giving the story time to breathe. A factor missing from todays inferior storytelling which is why I prefer the more ponderous (tension creating) build up. Real characters, rather than extras just there to be superficial until they are bumped off, with real reactions. No offense but you can believe in Barbara's character in a way you could never really believe in Ace. Story and character is king.
