No matter if you play piano or violin, viola, cello. I think it's the same. I will never forget a masterclass with Stephane Gheorghiu a famous roumanian violinteacher who said to me: les gammes c'est la base de la technique, that means the scales are the base of the technique. And still now in my progessed age even when I only practise for an hour or two it's scales. Heifetz the god of the violin first thing he demanded from his students was scales in all keys four octaves. And he himself when he had a concert and not much time before the performance practised scales.
I practise them every day normally one key per day four octaves and not only major and minor key. Augmented scale, harmonic minor, chromatic, gipsy scale in major and minor key, octatone and all seven modes and altered modes and of course arpeggios.
And I regret that I didn't do this enough in my youth, I think I would have been much more successfull if I would have done it earlier. That's why I write all this here. To inspire young musicians and students that they won't regret not to have practiced enough scales when they were young as I do.
And of course you can add still pentatonic and bebop and bluesscale, which is tricky. (I'm a little bit too lazy for that🤔)
And always with metronome two notes per beat, triplets and finally four notes per beat with various bowings and fingerings (That's of course specific stringinstrument)That takes a time but it keeps you in shape and the brain flexible.
I only can recommend to any student no matter which level: practice scales is like brushing teeth.
    Thank you for this video.

I’m a new subscriber and really love your teaching. I have 2 questions- I am preparing for my first concert and doing the Rach 3. I realize that my memory is basically MOTOR MEMORY. How does one differentiate between motor memory and traditional memory? Similarly, how can I tell I have memorized a piece versus playing it from motor memory? I’m sorry if this is confusing. Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you. Also- do you offer online live lessons? I’m without a teacher.
