Just installed this on my 07 5.9 and really like this setup and I’m coming from compounds. Warmup and the exhaust brake is awesome, fitment is fantastic considering this is mostly factory parts. My compounds experience was ok I was running an HE351/S472 and had some issues with fitment and an oil leak I couldn’t get rid of due to a mount problem. I got frustrated and wasn’t going back once they were removed.
@@repairvehicle the same as the 6.7, the VGT constricts and loads the engine. Most exhaust brakes do this too. I really don’t know of any that don’t have this function.
I personally love the exhaust brake on my 2014, I turn it on as soon as I start the truck. It helps save the brakes on your truck and I figure the more you use it, the less likely you are to have a problem. So far the truck has 200,000 miles on it and no problems out of the vgt, the transmission is a different story, I hate it.
On m’y 3rd Ram with a VGT and love it. When you engage the exhaust brake while in tow mode (auto trans obviously) and let off accelerator- be prepared for a substantial launch forward of your head towards the windshield. Works amazing. Great video
I have a he351ve on my first gen dodge project truck. I'm running a standaline controller. I feel in love with the turbo as I daily a 08. I bought a 67mm compressor wheel and 70mm turbine, just need to pull the turbo off and get the machining done. The controller I use is from Lil'black box vgt and there is app to custom tune the turbo so I can make changes to the vains depending on shaft speeds, super trick set up.
@@darkirondiesel yeah I use my as the controller has Bluetooth, can load the updates with the app as well and data log. Well worth the 500$, you pretty much can run a vgt on anything
I drive semi trucks and the VGT is so amazing its hard to pass up, I'm about to get a ram myself and I'm going VGT, I can't go without having that amazing spool up and exhaust brake.
I really love your truck and enjoy your videos. I do find it fascinating how 4th gen owners are doing 2nd & 3rd gen manifold and turbo swaps and here you are with a 3rd gen essentially doing a 4th gen swap! I guess it really boils down to what you are using the truck for. That VGT exhaust brake is intoxicating.
That's awesome! I'm running a standard he351ve on my 04.5 with the 12 valve. A buddy of mine helped build a mechanical controller and we're trying to find the best way to get the exhaust brake working with it. I'm thinking a button under the throttle where it rests and then to a switch in the cab that I can make it stay off or come on when the throttle is let off. Possibly use a fuel shut off solenoid for the exhaust brake. The BD setup seems so much simpler but I don't like the coolant aspect or the price. These turbos get pretty pricey. I ended up picking mine up for free from a job I did for someone and decided to make it work. Good stuff, it sounds nice and runs probably just as nice!
Man I just drove this thing to the lake and passing people on the single lane highway in 6th gear is so responsive. You just slightly press the pedal and you’re flying past then. I’m very happy I went this route!
I don’t get it why don’t you do a second Gen swap with Sneed Speed stainless manifold and it would sound really neat and keeps the heat out of 5-6 cylinders?
Right on buddy. I think these turbos govern themselves at 40 psi, but with that said 40psi of boost at 64mm is a lot more air flow then 40psi at 60mm. So even if they make the same boost the bigger turbo is pushing more air.

Looks like this videos about 2 years old. Do you still like it? I have a 03 and I was looking at this kit, just curious if long term it’s still a good idea to do
You need to clean up your tune. That smoke is fuel and soot and the soot is really bad on you vanes in your turbo so the cleaner the burn the longer you vanes will continue to move. I know guys that leave the brake on all the time to keep them freely moving for a long time. Great video I watch them all and keep us up dated. I want to do the same thing but with a Sneed Speed exhaust manifold with a 2nd gen swap and I just hate the turbo in the back. This will be on a 05 Dodge 3500 4 door long bed dullay 5.9 and I bought this RIH new only thing I’ve done is twin fuel filters Balwin water separator with drain it’s 5 micron and cat filter is 2 micron and that factory filter I put a Baldwin 5 micron and a Fleece in tanke lift pump that makes 21 lbs at idle and 18-19 with heavy load and gauge for lift pump the factory lift pump would put out 5 lbs at idle and 0 at a hard pull . So what kind of price did BD charge you for VG turbo ?
So I took your advice and bought the stock Howler. Going to install this week and I have one question. You installed the switch near the lighter/12v plug. Do you turn it off and on or basically leave it on all the time? My thought was to install the switch onto the shifter but if it is always on then there is no point, are you happy with your switch location? Lastly, your channel is awesome and super helpful....thanks again!

It’s an actual exhaust brake and amazing for towing. All the new trucks come with these vgt turbos from factory. My 2022 Cummins is also amazing with the exhaust brake especially in tow haul.
Great video I keep coming back to! One question I have since you bought the 64mm screamer and plan on upgrading your sticks to 120, did you upgrade your clutch yet? If so, to what? I’m curious as to what you’ll think this thing will put down and what measures you’re taking tranny wise to reduce wear and tear with that much power!
When I bought the truck the clutch was slipping, so I put in a southbend dual disk clutch rated for 750HP. I’m hoping to put down 500-600 hp with bigger sticks so the clutch should be more then enough. I also did heavy duty push rods, valve springs, and apr head studs when I replaced my head gasket
I need to do the head gasket and wanted an exhaust break without spending $100k on a new truck. You upgraded the Valve Springs, rods and studs. Would you do this any different? Now that you have had it for a while, would you do it again? I have a 2005 6 speed G56 that we tow with. Your vid's are very helpful. Thanks in advance!
I’m really happy with this set up. I did valve springs, push rods, head studs, and then the turbo plus now 90hp injectors. If I were you and you’re just using it mainly to tow I’d probably get the regular howler kit, not the performance one. Exhaust brake is amazing and it’s got tons of power

Great video!! I'm interested in doing the same mod to my 03 with a 6 speed NV5600 what additional parts did you need for the turbo coolant connection? How complicated is the wiring for BDD?
The kit comes with everything! But you will need to buy a 2005-2007 style downpipe like it says on their website, then a new v band clamp for the bigger flange. The wiring was mostly plug and play, you do have to splice into a couple wires on your accelerator pedal position sensor which is under your driver side battery, and splice into your coolant temp sensor signal wire. Just call tech support and have them email you the wiring diagram for the 2003 manual trans accelerator pedal position sensor. Follow their instructions and it’s super easy.
Reliability is the only thing that scares me away from VGT. Otherwise it looks awesome. They are so prone to issues it gets expensive fast. Either the solenoid dies or the vanes get stuck and turbo needs a rebuild.
Got a question maybe you can answer how would you hook this setup up my 5.9 is drive by cable but is an automatic? Anyway I can really wanting to do this!!!
Does anyone know if I got this kit and later on I wanted to switch out the exhaust manifold that came with this kit for a 2nd gen exhaust manifold, I’d be able to hook it up to the rest of this kit?
Mainly because I don’t personally know anyone that has put a VGT turbo on a 5.9 Cummins. I know lots of people that have big singles or even compounds but no one that’s done this. Plus the exhaust brake is awesome on a standard transmission.
@@darkirondiesel you think ill be as happy with the money spent with an automatic? Im pumped on the exhaust brake aspect. What do you think now that its been innfor a bit? (I just watched the vid last night)
You must be new to diesels. If you've ever bought a newer diesel they ALL come with vgt turbos. Dodge introduced them in late model 07's and use them until now. They are the future.
@@steve5912 Most guys towing or running transport like I was that went from vgt to fixed vane hated it. Smoke, egts, no exhaust brake unless you pay 1100 for an aftermarket one on top of the new turbo. Just from experience. Not one has liked them. Will this fit a 2nd gen cummins
I don’t think so, I think 2003 is the oldest they make it for. But maybe have a look on their website, they may have other options for your truck.
My EB doesn't come on at idle even when its cold
nvm it starting doing it. my truck has gremlins
How much boost does it build??
40psi
Do you sell those grills?

Does anyone know if I got this kit and later on I wanted to switch out the exhaust manifold that came with this kit for a 2nd gen exhaust manifold, I’d be able to hook it up to the rest of this kit?
Would you or anyone know. If I install this setup on a automatic 5.9 will I still get that exhaust brake jet sound at the exhaust in park?
I’m pretty sure you would. You could call BD tech support and ask them too
This vgt comes with the exhaust brake already? Or you had to buy that separate? Thanks
The vgt turbo is the exhaust brake, it comes together.

Can u just get a turbo off 6.7 and get a manifold for 5.9 and bolt same turbo on for a lot cheaper ? Expensive kit. Ughhh
Gudrun Crescent
Just out of curiosity, what made you decide on that turbo setup ?
Mainly because I don’t personally know anyone that has put a VGT turbo on a 5.9 Cummins. I know lots of people that have big singles or even compounds but no one that’s done this. Plus the exhaust brake is awesome on a standard transmission.
@@darkirondiesel you think ill be as happy with the money spent with an automatic? Im pumped on the exhaust brake aspect. What do you think now that its been innfor a bit? (I just watched the vid last night)
Damn near sounds like a 6.7
The it’s sounds good video
When you down shit try rev matching you might like it better it’s a lot smoother.
I’ll give it a try! Thanks
Why in the world would you do a 2nd Gen swap. I think you missed the bus on this one !
I meant to say why would you not do a 2 Gen swap on your truck you have it all apart !

Damn I’d hate to buy that truck because id have to put a normal Turbo back on it
VGT turbos are “normal” these days. It’s nice having a 64mm turbo with next to no lag.
You must be new to diesels. If you've ever bought a newer diesel they ALL come with vgt turbos. Dodge introduced them in late model 07's and use them until now. They are the future.
CP Steve Miller I haven’t bought a newer Diesel only pre emissions. And I’m definently not new
Dark Iron Diesel Yea their normal due to emissions. If I ever bought a new truck it would get a normal Turbo and fully deleted
@@steve5912 Most guys towing or running transport like I was that went from vgt to fixed vane hated it. Smoke, egts, no exhaust brake unless you pay 1100 for an aftermarket one on top of the new turbo. Just from experience. Not one has liked them. Don't get me wrong they're great if the truck's just a toy or only pulls a load once in awhile but out west in the mountains vgt is a game changer. To each their own. Just don't buy a truck with one if you don't like them because most after market swaps are around 2500 bucks. No thanks😬
