I wouldn't worry about the expense of having the raccoon tested if it didn't bite anyone. As another commenter said.....chicken wire works to keep chickens in, but it's not going to keep predators out. Reinforce it to ensure no predator can get in and kill the chickens. The new baby goats are totally adorable!

The county or state will run the necropsy test for rabies from the brain of the raccoon for free.
Historically, TX has more people die from Rabies each year than any other state. Is this person in TX? If so, better educational instruction is needed on what to do with a possible rabid animal. Another animal - a dog or a cat - could go snooping the burn pile about that smelly raccoon and lick its mouth .....and you are off to the races with another rabid animal and one that could be friendly to the children. Error on the side of caution Mr Eddy,, please.

Chicken wire is only ment to keep chickens in not keep predators out. We had to reinforce our chicken run with chain length fence to keep loose/wild dogs out. Hardware cloth or other fencing material would probably be better.
I would take the raccoon to be tested on the safe side as other wild animals in the area could have been exposed. If it comes back with rabies doesn't it need to be reported?

A racoon AND a possum can both dig and they will also go right through that chicken wire! I know from experience from having chickens over many years. I put dog wire around my pens. Then I dig a little ditch around the pen. Next I take wire and connect hardware cloth to the bottom of the pen so it's in the little ditch. Then I cover it with the ditch dirt so nothing can dig into the pen through the hardware cloth. I have lost way too many chickens to these critters but I have also learned from others wiser then I was. I hope this helps you guys. Sorry I missed you while you were here in my home state Alabama. I shop at Pedals from the past and just couldn't make it this time. God Bless

Hi Mr and Mrs Eddy, i have been a follower for a while but i havent said anything. It isnt normal for a raccoon to be out during the day. There is a possibility for it to have rabies, like you said in the video. But, there a r e other things that can cause animals like that to come out during the day. One is it is sick, from whatever reason. The best thing to do is to call the wildlife extension and ask questions. Tell them what you have and if they suggest having the raccoon tested by the state. If there rabies going around in a certain area the wildlife extension office needs to know. I live in South Dakota now but grew up in Oklahoma. We always did this with an animal that was wild but not acting right. One more thing, Brandon and Steph good job listening to your animals and their talking to you. Those chickens where telling you stuff was wrong in their pen. Way to go!!!! Stay safe and hydrated, God bless and all my love, Amy.

I hope your burn doesn’t get infected.
I heard by keeping the natural fluids inside the burn, keeps out infection and allow the fluid to back into the body. Personally I’d keep it covered.

Maybe set some cameras up around your chickens, Brandon. I would call the vet and find out about the raccoons and the whole rabies thing.

I got some square tubing, bolted it to the fertilizer and attached it to the trailer hitch on my lawn tractor. Much easier that pushing.

Hello friend, if you haven't done so already, just burn the racoon carcass just in case. Also, if you don't have any Aloe Vera plant you need to get yourself some and slice open a leaf and spread that Jelly all over the burn on your hand. iI is absolutely the best for burns & 100% natural! Aloe Vera, all you do is slice open a leaf and spread that juice/jelly on your wound and wrap that up and make sure it stays moist for a day or two, after that, just keep applying aloe vera to it without it wrapped and you'll rejuvenate brand new skin with no scar. Also good for cuts, scrapes, and very soothing on sunburns. I enjoy your videos. Good luck and God bless you, from Los Angeles, CA.

We see raccoons during the day all the time. They will be climbing around in the trees, running across the rode. Are you sure he hasn’t been there since night time and you just missed him? Anything can break through chicken wire very easy. Keep an eye out!

Hey also a tip for keeping animals from digging around your cages we buried wire where we set are cages for the chickens and they can’t dig because the wire will stop them around your cage we set are cage over top the wire that we buried.

The orchard sprinklers that you are using are the best! I find them at Home Depot for us city folk. The height and the heavy duty irrigation head helps to cover a large area of your garden fast. This sprinkle has adjustable legs so that you can adjust the sprinkle to handle slopes, hills and flat areas. I have used the same sprinkler for more than 10 years. I can’t say that for the run of the mill sprinklers. I highly recommend using timers to avoid using too much water or forgetting that you have a sprinkler going.

Layer hardware cloth over that chicken fencing. That will stop Racoons and other small predators including most Coyotes. A Coyote pack will tear through even that, but you will hear them. At that time add that smaller fencing. For Coyotes, a wounded rabbit call works wonders (add in a Real rabbit for greater effect so they smell it). Be aware that wounded rabbit calls can sound like a a scream from a mortally wounded child. Terrifying. But that sound to a Coyote is like Cat Nip to a cat.
