    I honestly question the data. I'm liberal, and a parent of a 4 year old boy. The # of movies that he's exposed to that have strong human female leads waaaaaaaay outweighs the reverse. The male characters he tends to see are often portrayed as bumbling or irrelevant. If there is a decent male character, it either an inanimate object, a monster, a human hybrid, or an animal (with the recent exception being Joe Garner, in Soul). We're not really steering him either, but we do pay attention. This is just what he gets exposed to through "main channel" sources (Disney, RUclips, Netflix, etc.). If we can't talk about this honestly, then we can't have a productive conversation, and it provides absolute cannon fodder for those who want to talk about a culture war.

Like Disney may not act like they know this but their whole brand caters to little girls, women who are mothers, or women who want to be a little girl forever. Like I've never seen "the boys" pumped to go to Disney. It's almost always a woman driving the decision to hit the park and to go to the movies. The only exception is Marvel movies which I guess you can say are guy's Dinsey Princes if you want.

    This doesn't explain why Pixar storytelling has eliminated antagonists ever since Rataouille. The protagonist in every single animated film is fighting their own inner demons every film. It is really weird and it makes me feel uncomfortable.

    • @xoxoroli
      @xoxoroli 2 года назад +1

      maybe that sort of structure, in whether or not to have an external antagonist, is something that isn’t immediately related to the specific point in gender ratio covered in this video. but to the point of antagonists in general, i think the more recent films are exploring the internal struggles the main characters are feeling, and having said struggles bounce around in their own stories/minds, rather than have those same struggles clash with someone else (an antagonist). Toy Story 2, for example, didn’t have a TrueAnatagonist until later in the film, once the ideas on what it means to be a Toy and the role they serve is fully fleshed out and explored by Woody. it isn’t until his mind is made up that he clashes with Pete, who’s ideas and worldview are already established and apparently at odds with what Woody wants to do.
      if i may ask, why does seeing a protagonist’s struggles make you feel weird and uncomfortable?

    • @LetoDK
      @LetoDK 2 года назад +2

      This video is not about that subject, so obviously it doesn't explain that subject.
      But regarding your topic, maybe it's to do away with the post-war American black/white pure good/pure evil, un-nuanced storytelling that doesn't help us reflect well upon the world we are living in.

  • @petrichor499
    @petrichor499 2 года назад +3

    Diversity in movies be it LGBT, people of multiple races or women, it all feels really forced in movies.
    It feels like movies are trying to be politically perfect. Their focus is on just that so the script and plot suffers The plot is an after thought!
    Movies like Turning Red and Raya and the Last Dragon are examples of that. The female characters are unrelatable. They get women so wrong.
    Movie makers should educate themselves properly on how to be inclusive. Not to tick a box or for viewership but to reflect real life.
    Diversity in a movie should be natural. That's what makes the biggest impact.

  • @Shuforces1

    I do not think that this is as big of a problem as they present it is.
    Franchises like cars are mainly focused towards a boy audience, since girls by nature are interested in other topics different from speed and action.
    I would argue that having a 10% female cast/characters in Cars 1 is actually a good idea because it gives scarcity to a resource (in this situation being female characters) which makes female leads stand up much more than the rest of the male cast.
    In other words, with my argument I am hitting you with your own rocks on your own head.

    NEVER hire anyone for any role or position whatsoever simply because of their gender or race, instead hire ONLY based on Capacity and Competence, even if it means that 99% of a specific gender or race are hired to assume such roles or positions.

If you decide to play politics with your keep, competitors will be more than delighted to fatally punish you for it.

You only need to give the "opportunity" to interview (not the job) to women and POC and you will find plenty of people qualified. There is absolutely no reason to focus only on "capacity and competence" whatever that means. Teamwork and dedication beats individual skill every single time.

    I think inclusivity is essential, but to say that it's discriminatory to see one character as one identity rather than another is circumstantial, not a prejudicial view explicitly. I think it should get better over time as culture and experience disperses. Inclusion is a yes but as an excuse, and a premise is a no. like if it is a period of oh sally dropped the ball, everyone can see themselves dropping that same ball but the expansion into the specific experience as a lady and their mother. It is unique in contrast to a male experience of a guy and their mother. or a black guy and a white guy. i think it should just be simple to have the reason that everyone should be included should be enough. everything has a back story but to have a negative perspective of intent doesn't really have a place in society in means of progress
