Maybe it's the way I hold the pick, but when I play without the pick I seem to do ok and stay in rhythm, but sometimes I grab the pick and the wheels fall off.
Have you tried strumming the stings with a pick and just muting the strings and staying in tune with a metronome before moving to strumming actual chords?
