(It took a long time for blockbuster films to get as far as the Royal Theatre, in the so-slow Canadian distribution network.) @@lumiere1286 How good of you to write. A fine film depicting 1920s and 1930s life, in a way free of pretence, and perhaps in some ways suitable for a child even while directed to an audience of grown-ups, is the 1944 UK Tehnicolor film "This Happy Breed". You can find that film through the RUclips search engine. It is also helpful to look in RUclips for old black-and-white films, such as "London Belongs to Me", and for the early work of Alfred Hitchcock. Of course reading is still more beneficial than film! A still better friend than the screen is the library. :-) - (signed) Toomas Karmo, in Nõo Rural Municipality, Estonia

I thought I heard Christopher Plummer’s name mentioned a few times recently. I was hoping this wasn’t the reason why. He will be missed very much by so many people, including me.
I can still remember seeing The Sound of Music in a re-release to theaters c. 1973. I was so fortunate to see it on one, huge, Wide Screen in a large theater right down the road from where I lived.
Julie Andrews was so beautiful and funny. And that VOICE. I loved her. But, by the end of that film, I was in love with Christopher Plummer. Tall. Dark hair. Stern, serious face, but when he smiled, a mischievous grin. The suits. SO handsome.
He had beautiful hands. And the fingers of both hands would fidget a little as he walked. That fascinated me. I will NEVER forget that. I imitated that fidgeting for a while after I saw that film.
Over many years I saw him many times. He played heroes, villains and ordinary men, all with the same ease. Yeah, I will miss him a lot.

The whimsy in this is stunning. I wish I could feel the grace that Julie Andrews felt in the mountains. Her voice paired with the scenery makes me dream that I can one day run through the mountains tops in perfect weather and feel the wind carry my soul to a happier place.

It's so carefree and blissful! Yes, the music pairs beautifully with the setting. I wish I could go there someday. Although funnily enough, during shooting it wasn't perfect weather. It was actually quite cold, and it rains a lot in Austria so that kept making things complicated! On top of that, the wind created by helicopter they used to take the shot of her spin kept knocking her flying into the dirt every single time they shot it! But it all came together to create one of the most beautiful and memorable pieces of cinema ever 💕

  • @AndySaenz

They had a difficult time getting that shot. They had finished shooting all of the location scenes except that one on a Tuesday, and had planned to do the helicopter shot the next morning. Wednesday morning it was raining, so they had to call Hollywood to see if they would allow them to wait until Thursday to shoot it. They said yes. Thursday morning it was still raining, so they called Hollywood again to ask if they could shoot it the following day. They said yes, but told them if they couldn't get the shot Friday they'd have to return home without getting that shot. Friday morning it was no longer raining, and they got that famous shot. The downdraft from the helicopter knocked Julie Andrews down a few times when the helicopter got close to her as they were filming multiple takes.

Every time I watch it I am re-amazed at just how good every single bit of it is: fabulous acting, due in part to superb casting choices, the music! (and my favorite song is "Climb Every Mountain", which is almost never sung in concert), the choreography, not just the scenery but the way it is used, the opening sequence, the closing sequence, and overall superb direction. I'm so glad Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer played the leads - no one else could have come close to their acting ability in these demanding roles, much less matched Dame Julie's vocal ability.

RIP Christopher Plummer. I will say this about The Sound of Music: As a young boy, it was my first experience of seeing a couple break up--that is, between the Captain and the Baroness (the blonde). I was struck with how "amiable" it was although with a felt tension, AND they avoided eye contact. The Baroness seemed more distressed with it. And I said to myself: So this is how a couple breaks up. Somewhat naive, I know, but I took it for what it was worth.

The Baroness did try to run her off, but once Maria comes back she knew she didn’t stand a chance. It’s sometimes better to bow out gracefully and save face than make a scene.

As is Judy Garland. As is Audrey Hepburn (tho she was not a singer so much a dancer actor) I may have been stuck in a religious bubble, but I am grateful for these peep holes of bright light vintage cinema would entrance me in. "The Sound Of Music"
The hills are alive with the sound of music
With songs that I sung for a thousand years
The hills feel my heart with the sound of music
My heart wants to sing every song it hears
My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds
That rises from the lake to the trees
My hearts wants to sigh like a chime that flies
    For church on a breeze
To laugh like a brook when it trips and falls over
    Stones on its way
To sing through the night like a lark
    Who is learning to pray
I go to the hills when my hearts is lonely
I know I will hear what I've heard before
My heart will be blessed with the sound of music
    And I'll sing once more
