    The turbo on your P2 Volvo has a drain tube with both a gasket up top and a seal down below. Over time both the seal and gasket can become brittle and leak over time. Luckily installation is pretty straight forward and inexpensive.

    I just did this work today on my 2.4T (V70 2001). While it can make things easier, you actually don't need to mess with the coolant lines at all. With some will and violence (swedish expression) the return pipe comes out quite easily.

    Thank you, Jay, for the video! I was able to replace the gasket and seal in my boyfriend's car, 04 Volvo S60 2.5T AWD. I didn't remove the angle gear. And didn't remove the lower coolant line, I just backed it off to give it enough room for movement and was able to get the return pipe out with a little finessing. However, getting it back into alignment was a battle that I was losing for a few hours. As Jay does in his video, I put the return pipe in place and then slid in the gasket. The gasket wants to travel around, so have a curved pick on hand to help shift it around. Another note, I had to reinstall the return pipe a few times because the lower seal was not seating properly. I eventually placed the seal in first, then installed the return pipe, apply some pressure and you'll feel the return pipe sink into the seal perfectly - that's when the return pipe finally aligned on the gasket end.     Completed the work on my R model without removing the angle gear. Next time I definitely will as it was a massive PITA. Had to work almost entirely by feel. Anyways thank you for the clear and concise video.

    Note to self; you do not need to remove the coolant pipe nor drain the coolant, just bend the coolant pipe a little like Jay did, at least this was the case w/ 2001 T5 with 16T turbo.

      I didnt even bend the coolant pipe, I just moved the return pipe up as much as it would go (while twisting it), then I took a firm grip on the bottom part of the pipe and used some will and violence to get it out. 2.4T from a V70 2001 (B5244T3 engine)

      What about the oil? Should I drain that or will there not be much that comes out of the turbo??

      @@devyngulick5373 no the oil will drain down to the block in the time it takes you to lift the vehicle. I saw no oil at all when I removed it, and I didn’t remove any oil or wait before starting

    FCP I would love to see this done on an XC70. Any tips on how to access this area without having to remove the angle gear!?

      extended long reach torx bit 3/8th drive is the only way to get the rear torx bolt started. front bolt is easy.
      You can get them out easy but getting them started back in is near impossible with angle gear in the way.
      I would also glue the gasket to the drain tube flange with indian head shellac before trying to reinstall the tube.

    great info I have to do the same on my 01 , S40 1.9 the seal is leaking and the oil ends up on the top of my exaust smokes and stinks like crazy, but looks like a pit harder to do it on the S40 the right driveshaft braket mount is on my way . Never the less great to see you doing it.

      Hi thanks for your feedback I did the job 2 days ago came out perfect no leaks anymore amazing $2.00 dollares O ring and 1.5 labour but I had an empty hoist it turn out not bad at all. Thanks again.Cheers!!

    I have an 06 xc70 2.5 ,I was in there today and I noticed the blue line coming off the TCV is not connected to anything on the other end.Where does this line plug into ?I know this is an old video but you seem to know Volvos pretty well,any help would be greatly appreciated.

    For users who will do this at home, don't forget to run the complete burping/refill coolant procedure with the car at idle and not driving until the thermostat opens, then the next morning refill the tank again as needed. Keep an eye on the instrument display to be safe.

      @@germanchavez9832 after filling up to the max line on the container, start the engine with the cap open and let it run. Wait until it starts sinking (thats when the thermostat opens), then keep filling it up until it stops sinking.
      Should be noted, you do not need to remove the coolant pipe, it just takes a little bit of will to get the return pipe out of there with the coolant pipe still attached.

    Hi, my car is a XC90 AWD, 2007, 2.5T. In the event I had to remove the angle gear to have access to the "turbo return pipe bots", what do I need to put back the angle gear? do I need to replace the angle gear gasket, if any? Thanks

    Does the paper gasket fail often? I only did mine 10,000miles ago with a genuine Volvo part and it has started weeping already.

    He says it’s a LITTLE extra work for an all wheel drive because you have to remove the angle gear.
    Yeah wow let’s talk about an extra 3 1/2 to 4 hours. I know because I did it. This guy does not even know what he’s talking about.
    You have to remove the driveline all of the exhaust heat, shielding and the right front axle which means you have to break apart the right front lower wishbone and disc, brake caliper, and all of that to get that angle gear out. Major pain in the butt for an XC 92.5 turbo

    Thanks for the helpful Volvo videos. I have a Volvo XC90 2.9, 2005. One of the turbos is blown. Is there a way to visually observe or check easily which of the 2 is blown. Thanks

      You can check each turbo for exessive shaft play. The one with more shaft play is likely the blown turbo. This would require gaining access to the compressor housing of each turbo. However, I would recommend replacing both turbos, as, if one is blown, the other is likely not far behind.

      @@fcpeuro I agree with the replacing of them both. There is another Volvo in the area that is scrapped. It looks decent but the head gasket is blown in theirs. It has been sitting in their back yard. I could probably buy the car for next to nothing. I wonder if the turbos would be bad in that one? Would the fact they junked it due to a blown head gasket have any effect on the turbos? Do the turbos in these cars generally last a while? It might be in both of our interests to make them an offer on their junked Volvo. They get cash and I get lots of meat on the bone...

    so this turbo has 2 coolant lines and 2 oil lines and you were fixing COOLANT LEAK right ?
    QUESTION : how do you know if turbo is burning oil ? tested compression and all is ok 150psi in each cilinder.

    I have a 09 Volvo S60 T5, I know it leaks oil because I’m always a quart low but never goes below. I do get oil on the ground but not the amount I loose. I believe the leak is coming from the Turbo and is burning off. However, there’s no smell or smoke while driving. Your video has inspired my curiosity to attempt a repair. Any ideas of the issue I’m experiencing?

If its the oil return pipe, you will see oil around the pipe (on mine it was the lower gasket), and then a coneshaped oil mess going from the return pipe down to the bottom of the block, with the bottom of the block (oil pan etc) being completely drenched in oil.

    What was the indications of faults that led you to exchange the Return Line Seal?

      Living with a 2005 S60T2 and a 2007 V70T2, I have to read all about possible problems and how to solve them. All information I gather is stored in a database, - either as a document with text and pictures or as, in this case, as a link to somebody who knows.
      Yes, - I'm an engineer nerd, - electronic engineer, - though :-)

      @@johndue2366 I just replaced the gasket and seal on the return line on my '96 855 T5 this weekend. Pretty much the same procedure, though I only had to loosen the supply line a little to wiggle the line out of the block and away.
      For this line, the specific symptoms are oil leakage from either end (mine was the seal at the block, not the gasket on the turbo).
      It'll cause enough of a leakage to drip from the back of the engine, and can look like a cam seal or RMS leak, though those are both rarer and more difficult to tackle, so I suggest looking at the turbo oil lines first whenever there is oil at the back of the engine ("back" in this case means towards the rear of the car, not the "back" of the engine, as that technically would be to the left side of the car itself ;) ).
      My advice is to check out the forums and repair database on matthewsvolvosite.com for anything and everything about fixing your own Volvo. :)

      Hi Tony, if your car is leaking oil and running rough it sounds like you have a clogged PCV system which has blown out some oil seals. I would replace the PCV system and of course, replace the seals that have blown out and causing your oil leaks.

    Can turbo oil leakage cause the turbo to lose boost, or what are the symtom (beside the obvious oil stane on the ground)? I havnt yet checked where exactly oil is leaking. But I can see clearly its coming somwhere around the turbo area and the car started to leak oil about the same time I started to feel the lost of boost.

      This video is for the oil return pipe only. Having a leak here won't be an issue in terms of affecting the engine or turbo. If the actual turbo loses pressure, you have a bigger problem.

      @@perkele1989Okey, the car has been leaking oil under the hood about the same time as i started to notice that the turbo was starting to lose turbo boost, and the boost pressure diminished slowly the more i drove the car (Now one year later the boost performace is just weak af).
      The oil leakage also seems like its connected somehow to the turbo, becuse every time I press dowm the gas pedal hard and let the turbo load i almost needed to refil the with oil every or every other time I let the turbo charge up a bit.
      And now today, when the turbo boost are very low, I dont need to refil as I did a year ago.
      I know, it can just be an coincidence, im a noob so please sir, be patient with me😇.
      Ive been looking under and over the motor, but I cant see where its coming from, becuse its oil everywhere, but very fresh under ( more in the middle and a little bit on the drivers side and oil on top is more dry but not dry dry...
      I understand that I need to let a professional do a troublehoot.
      I just dont have the money atm to fix it :( so I turn to internet :)

    Hi my 2003 Volvo v70xc has white smoke come out the exhaust and the exhaust pipe has oil too upon checking my intercooler I found oil and also have transmission issues,hard shift and jerking. I did the glove test to check PCV and the glove did not inflated. I did the head gasket test to check if water does not increase in the water bottle after driving for +\- 20 min with initial volume been min .What could be the problem ?

      White smoke tends to be burning coolant, so don't totally rule out the head gasket. If the smoke is more blueish than white, it could be burning oil from bad turbocharger seals, which would also explain oil in the intercooler. Transmission issues are going to be separate from any engine issues.

      @@beamello6906Hi there fellow Volvo owner. How do you seal off the turbo? I just obtained a 2005 XC90 2.5T AWD with white oily smelling smoke from the exhaust. The intercooler and the input and output tubing to it are literally dripping with oil. The compression test is ok. Does sealing off the turbo stop the smoke and diagnose the issue as strictly a turbo problem? Did replacing the turbo solve your problem? The instructions for turbo replacement seem difficult for my Volvo. Was yours the same? Best regards. David

    I did the work in my xc70 (AWD :( .. yes you need to remove the anglegear) and after 2 months leak is back, this time only for the o-ring not from the gasket of the turbo. Could be that the dealership sold me the wrong o-ring? My o-ring is green.

      The dealers mess up sometime believe it or not ...its TUFF belive they will give u the wrong part just cause your aren't bringing it to them to fix...man forget that!!! Some of us don't have money TREES growing in our backyards!!!

      i just bought a xc90 2.5T year 2006 with 210K miles on clock.
      I did a lot of service on it like timing belt with Volvo genuine water pump.
      New oil castrol w5-40 and filters.
      It started to show oil presure light.
      Went to service put another oil pump and another oil thinking that is an oil problem.
      Today i went with my family on a drive and while i was driving uphill no oil light on but when i stoped for a coffe on the back of exaust i saw white smoke.I thought as long as oil presure lamp is not on ok lets drive.When i finished driving uphill and started to go down the oil presure light comes on.I turned the car off for 10 minutes and started again with no light on.On the way back home same thing.I noticed when i push the brakes it comes of and on.I have checked the sensor is fine.
      Engine runs very quite.
      Any help please???

    I have oil on the bottom of my turbo, and engine is burning oil. I'm hopeing this Is the problem, that its leaking on to turbo and burning of or something. does this sound like I need to change the seals?

      Hi Steven, if you can visibly see oil leaking, or dripping on the ground, the return line seal may be the problem. However, if your engine is burning oil, it could also be a bad turbo itself, where the internal seals in the turbo failed, which would cause burning oil and smoke out of the exhaust.

      @@fcpeuro hi thx for the quick reply.there's no smoke at all. I'm seeing oil on the turbo. But not really on the ground. PCv is also bad, I've been leaving dipstick cracked to vent PCv till I can change it. I'm gonna jack it up Soon and see exactly where its coming from. Oil is also going in the intercooler houses, but that's probably because pcv. And there noise from the suspension top strut look OK. Not all the time, on stop and go intermittent, and on some bumps. What usually clunks?

      @@hanzbe420 Smart move on leaving dipstick cracked so you don't blow out any seals from the bad PCV. Clunking could be sway bar end links too.
