Ok hearing someone say "the music is dull" is really bizarre, considering that the spyro trilogy's music is something that's praised amongst the majority of the fanbase. And you have to imagine that if music in a game has that much of an impact on the kids playing it, that the now 20 year olds bring it up in almost every spyro conversation... Hmm "dull tracks". I don't think I have ever heard those words in the context of the 3 first Spyro games. I'm completely baffled. At least 80% of the tracks in each Spyro game are incredibly memorable and great tunes. Now compare that to something like Assassin's Creed that hasn't had a single memorable track in the games since Jesper Kyd never did any of the music since AC Revelations 7 years ago. The exact same thing can be said about Hitman and, again, Jesper Kyd not being there since Blood Money. Those are perfect examples of games with dull soundtracks and the fact that we have something to compare with when they were incredible and memorable.
The original soundtracks is lengendarily written by Stewart Copeland and has lots of weird time signatures like 7/8. In worst case it's an interesting soundtrack
You can clearly tell the reviewer either never played the originals or only sampled the first Spyro for a couple hours. I don't remember anyone who had any problem with any part of the original series. If anything this remaster is a perfect 10/10 because it doesn't try to change what the original was. It's just an enhanced experience by the graphics and only minor quality of life upgrades like fast travel in all games. I still have my original copies that I purchased new, no scratches and played for years. I'm thrilled by this remaster as its the first remaster done correctly. This is one remaster to be proud of us all of us who grew up with this series can now share it with the new generation and have faith they'll experience the same game we did.
Great review, but like many others in the comments, I respectfully disagree with your thoughts on the music. Might just be nostalgia or how much of a fan you are, but I literally remember every single score from the classic game, and I didn't even realize it until playing through Reignited. To listen to Copeland's music again and realizing that I could hum along to each track was such a cool experience playing through the first few levels, and I find the music far more interesting than in a lot of other games these days. If anything what bugged me about the game was the camera, as you pointed out, and that the Dragons often gave advice regarding how to kill enemies that you already have had to kill in order to save them- doesn't make any sense giving tips to stuff you've already figured out. Besides that, I enjoyed your review, agreed with a lot. I do think it needs to be applauded on how true they've been to the original. It really felt like a true remake, where things are only improved on slightly and not completely altered or overdone.

I mean, Spyro 1 has an OST probably on par with Ristar and Headdy in terms of classic platformers, but OK. The sequels are quite solid as well and certainly better than almost any PS2/Xbox/Gamecube-era Platformer OST. Gimme that Dark Hollow all day, every day.

The thing that shouldn't be overlooked in this game is how much the new artistic choices - not only the updated graphics, but the style they chose for said updated graphics added to the experience, alongside the great animations. I agree that the games have dated a bit gameplay wise, however they ooze so much charm that playing these games remastered is like playing for the first time. It's really the remaster whose graphic updates add more to the experience and thus, the most justified remake I've ever played. SotC's new style was ugly, and Crash's new style (with the ugly realistic fur etc), coupled with the new lazy animations that were way inferior to the ps1 classic, made the remake actually the inferior version. IMO Spyro's remaster is leagues above Crash and a template on how to remake cartoony games going forward
@@ZrKy7 The game on the disc is 30 GB with additional 20 GB download for the rest. They could have put the entire game on 50 GB Blu-ray disc which they have used here, but remember this game was initially rushed and then delayed. What I am guessing here is that the physical versions were already produced by then (the box art was even leaked showing download requirements for 2 and 3) so now we are stuck with this. Thanks Activision.
@@ZrKy7 I don't buy that argument at all. Do you know how much a blue-ray disc can hold? A shit ton of space. They dropped the ball and I am voting with my wallet and not buying. On the other hand, I loved what they did with Crash...
No disrespect, is it just me, or does it seem like reviews that Damiani writes seem to have alot of backlash for something the court of public opinion usually disagrees with him on? Everyone went crazy on his Zelda review for not being a 10, and I pretty much fail to see a single comment agreeing with him on the soundtrack and/or cutscenes.
Yeah, I know I really enjoy the music, I know it probably has some to do with nostalgia but I feel like the original is considered iconic by many. But I understand everyone can have a different opinion. Just noticed other comments are really harping on that aspect. Really enjoyed the review though. You guys make awesome stuff!
No disrespect intended, but if he has a contentious opinion, he is going to get some flak. I get it. He didn't like the music. Cool opinion, but taking into account that this is a remaster of a beloved series, chances are people are going to enjoy the music. Even if he is right, he is going to be dealing with a lot of people that loved that music. So my point is, it is ok to say that about the music, as it is ok to say that you heartily disagree with that opinion. If both are said in respectful ways, don't need the drama. However, I'm of the opinion that if you do not have to say anything good about something as personal as music preferences, better not say anything, because at the end of the day this aspect of the game is far more personal than other aspects that can have some basis in objective terms. One last example: I get it that you comment the lackluster music in for example a warcraft game. You get a series that is reveared for its ost, and then you get a game where is meh. Cool, you can say it. To say it about a remaster where people are feeling nostalgic, and the right thing to do is to preserve the music as it was in order to be faithful feels, at the very least, like a slant that was not necessary. These are my two cents.
One very concerning thing is that the disk is incomplete and needs about 15GB to download before you can play it. And I read somewhere that the TOS for Activision says they are not responsible for the product once the online download is discontinued. This along with no subtitles. Just hoping that a PC version arrives that is a complete download.
It already is a complete download, but if you buy the disk, you need to know that not all of the games fit on there, since the whole package without the extra themes are about 64 GB. With the dynamic PS4 themes were talking a little over 67 GB,and theres a 50 GB limit on the Blu-rays.
@@pipkin5287 If an open world fits on a blu-ray, you can bet your ass that Spyro should too. Bad optimization or compression is not an excuse to exclude the games from the disk and have them be downloadable only. If they needed two discs, they should do like Red Dead and include both discs.
Guys we get it, you can switch to the original OST, you don't have to tell them 500 time. It doesn't mean they are not allowed to talk about the new OST.
Got my copy release day. Great to revisit classic platforming in modern graphics. I hope it does well and companies move forward with more PSX remakes. Ahem, Twisted Metal 1&2 please
Disappointed at no mention of the actual bad points of this remake: -2/3 of the game aren't on the disk and are download-only. Big con. -the game is capped at 30fps. Although this was in line with the original, I feel like with modern hardware they definitely could have improved this for the remake. The graphics are not that demanding compared to other modern games. -in addition, there are frame-timing issues that can introduce stutter that was not present in the originals. This means gameplay that is actually less smooth than the originals. -many find the liberal use of motion blur to be too much and become destructing. An option to turn it off shouldn't be too much to ask. The music and cutscenes are subjective, but i think these are some of the real negatives that should be addressed. Overall a good remake, but disappointed that this review passed over these important points.
@@MisterBrodo I get that, but in this case it's not just small details for people who are curious or comparing platforms, it's a big part of the game experience. Performance and motion blur affects the game-play in a big way for many people who played it. That fact should make it worth mentioning in a review. If it's something that effects peoples experience with the game, why not put it in the review? That's literally what reviews are for.
I disagree on the cutscenes if I’m honest. They were in the originals and as a kid they made me laugh, a lot. Also the music is still some of my favorite in gaming both new and old, but that’s very much so an opinion.
I actually remember really missing the level specific cutscenes in Spyro 3 because of how much fun the scenes in Spyro 2 were. Spyro 3 was a great game otherwise, but that little bit of extra effort for each stage just made Spyro 2 the more enjoyable game for me.
Those games are timeless and have aged well. PS1 era games have a graphical aesthetic that simply doesn’t age well to many people. There’s no reason to remake old Mario & Zelda games from the ground up.
Bruce Alrighty They did on DS and 3DS. Their 3D models hold up well enough that they don't need a proper remaster. PS1 3D models definitely don't hold up which is why these full remasters are more appropriate.
Is no one seriously going to mention the removal of the chest and diamond animation during the loading screen? I was so pissed when I saw a bland number beneath Spyro who can move and spew flames but come on, that animation is an integral part of the series.
People who are disagreeing with the soundtrack are I think taking what the reviewer said out-of-context. He is referring to the "remastered" soundtrack, not the Copeland soundtrack. I do have to agree to an extent. Whilst a lot of it is good, some of the tracks are a bit hit or miss. Some do amplify what the original sounds did but others fall a bit flat. It will all come down to personal taste in the end for a lot of you. My biggest complaint with the Reignited Trilogy was how Spyro handled during a lot of the races, especially in speedways and skateboard race challenges. Because of how tight the controls feel, Spyro moves much faster than he did in the original trilogy. Because of this, you can end up over compensating when it comes to doing tricks or trying to pass through a ring on the speedways which lead to many frustrating moments where the game sent me teetering off the rails. That said though, this is still at its core the remakes I think we have all been waiting for. Whilst there are things I miss about the originals (e.g. how enemies used to sound), Toys For Bob have put so much detail into these games that any nitpicks I have are far outweighed by the positives. It's a great set of games that any Spyro fan should pick up as well as introduce new spyro fans to. In the words of Sgt. Byrd: "It's good to be back in action!"
Nitpick, but I'd like it if the industry/writers would someday standardize the difference the between Remake and Remaster. -I was always going by the former as a major rebuilding of the assets and/or level design (Resident Evil 1 & MGS Twin Snakes on Gamecube). -The latter was mostly prominent starting with the PS3/360 era where previously SD games would gain better resolution/textures/fidelity (God of War Collection, FFX+FFX-2 HD Remaster). Even HD games can be improved from PS3 to PS4, as seen with Dark Souls & increased frame rate. This Spyro trilogy seems like a "remake" as far as I can tell.
Luckily the game does allow for the player to switch to he original soundtrack. I wish the N Sane Trilogy had that option too, even though its soundtrack for the most part was actually pretty good.
I need a new game to play since this coronavirus gots me stuck at home. Will I like this if I loved all the other 3D platformers? I loved Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Poi, A Hat In Time, and Yooka-Laylee.

3:50 Was that cutscene supposed to be an example of the humor missing its mark? Because it didn't. It's the same black Insomniac humor I also loved in the original Ratchet and Clank trilogy
God, imagine the ratchet and clank trilogy getting this treatment, staying with 60fps and the original score... But completely new ue4 graphics. I could die.
Bring this to the PC and you'll get my buy just like crash bandicoot... Do the same with the the Jak series (with or without Jak x) and all the old Rachets please, would buy that in a heartbeat.
I've never played these games I got Crash but damn that game is move jump die repeat lol I totally forgot how hard they was! I prefer more exploration based platform games like Mario 64 and Sunshine so this looks more up my street I'm thinking?
After playing the Crash trilogy, I was totally looking forward to this till I found out about the physical game fiasco. This trilogy will not be future proof for someone like me that loves to play my games 4,5, or 10 years later. Too bad.
Damiani, I get it if the comedy in Ripto's Rage wasn't your style, but I don't think you can review those tiny comedic moments objectively. Jokes hit differently for different people, I personally love that stuff and it's part of why the second game is my favourite in the series. Small nitpick I know, but just a gripe I will always have when it comes to any kind of comedy. Great review otherwise though, I definitely want to check out the remaster. Love and respect!
So they don't care that two of the three games aren't on the disc?!?! Making you download the second two games is deal breaker for collectors, when the servers go offline there will be no way to download these games.
You forgot to mention in regards to the music that you can switch between the reignited soundtrack and the original soundtrack. Unless you have the same opinion about the original soundtrack in which I would have to strongly disagree.
Never expected from this channel to hear something so unreasonable as complaining about the Soundtrack (the original OST is in there too after all) and about the cutscenes. Don't get me wrong, everyone has their preferences and the right to have their own opinion but man, what a huge mistake to make. It's one of those things that are universally accepted as fact, and opinion is non applicable! Anyway, I still love this channel!
it is a remake not a remaster. a remaster reuses the code of the older games and only improving on graphics (and some controls and maybe some code). this was completly remade, everything is newly reconstructed and recoded. so not a remaster but a remake. that is an important distinction between the two.
Sad to see no credible review outlet mentioning the motion blur. I don't want to fully disable it entirely from the game but a toggle would be nice. There's too much in this trilogy and it gives me a headache during game play when you realize that this trilogy of remastered games also introduces horrible frame pacing.

The crash port on the switch didn't have the fur textures his model was smooth looking
imo the stylic choices of the new games were inferior to the old ones
I like the castle look in spyro 2's hub world
The biggest negative with this game is that the physical version doesn't have all 3 games on the disc...just the first game. Why why why?!
Calvin Dang it's the reason I'm not buying. Maybe in the future I'll pick it up when it drops in price.
They don't fit into the disc. Seems like they had poor compression issues.
I'm hoping for a greatest hits version with all 3 on the disc. I'll buy that one.
I had to replay "the soundtrack is dull" like 5-6 times because I was convinced I was hearing the reviewer wrong
Another amazing review by Brandon Jones.
This is not by Brandon.
The guy's on a roll! Ben has to step it up, he only has one review!
@@ihateurvid well, they must have contracted some intern with an awfully similar voice to do these reviews then
@@Esmoxe Michael Damiani wrote the review. Brandon Jones reads the script and does voice work
@@Esmoxe The reviews are voiced by Brandon but he doesn't write all of them.
Guess Damiani isn't a fan of the police? 😅 Soundtrack is easily up there with the likes of Banjo and Mario though
I like this MUCH better than Mario games.

So it really makes you *feel* like Spyro.
Anyone else recall hearing about "new orb challenges" for Spyro 2? What happened to that?
One very concerning thing is that the disk is incomplete and needs about 15GB to download before you can play it.
And I read somewhere that the TOS for Activision says they are not responsible for the product once the online download is discontinued.
This along with no subtitles.
Just hoping that a PC version arrives that is a complete download.
Activision probably says this on all games to cover their ass.
Game is fantastic, if only we can get the same kind of remaster for Command and Conquer now too.. cuz it was just announced lol.
That one turned out great too
@@DeltaAssaultGaming Haha yeah XD
Love 💕 Spyro the dragon 🐉 series can’t wait next one 😅looking amazing 😻
Guys we get it, you can switch to the original OST, you don't have to tell them 500 time. It doesn't mean they are not allowed to talk about the new OST.
Got my copy release day. Great to revisit classic platforming in modern graphics. I hope it does well and companies move forward with more PSX remakes. Ahem, Twisted Metal 1&2 please
I so want this game so much
Disappointed at no mention of the actual bad points of this remake:
-2/3 of the game aren't on the disk and are download-only.
This is just a review of the game not a digital foundry tech analysis.
That's literally what reviews are for.
when your sophisticated gaming review circle can't into simple mid-90s slapstick.
I do agree about the camera, it gave me trouble during the boss battles.
Never played the originals...but these games are amazing and are super beautiful!!
But the music was amazing
This was a great review. This is my first video I've seen of yours. Just subscribed
Nintendo needs to do this with the old Zelda and Mario games, for the Switch.
Imagine ocarina of time truly remastered. Boom!
Those games are timeless and have aged well. PS1 era games have a graphical aesthetic that simply doesn’t age well to many people. There’s no reason to remake old Mario & Zelda games from the ground up.
Which games are you referring to?
@@earvingd, Ocarina of Time... Majora's Mask... Mario 64...
I'm waiting to see if this will get a Switch port. Having both this and the Crash trilogy on the go would be a dream come true.
Nah the cutscenes are fucking amazing and the art style is gorgeous
Luckily the game does allow for the player to switch to he original soundtrack. I wish the N Sane Trilogy had that option too, even though its soundtrack for the most part was actually pretty good.
I need a new game to play since this coronavirus gots me stuck at home. Will I like this if I loved all the other 3D platformers? I loved Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Poi, A Hat In Time, and Yooka-Laylee.
Nostalgia for spyro games and old gametrailers.com reviews all wrapped up in one video
Every score the critics give, the fans think this game deserves more? Seriously who’s gonna up it to a ten?
"The soundtracks don't get much love."
He says it so matter-of-factly. 😆
Only played the original briefly but really enjoyed this trilogy.
Well now we know what Damiani's taste in music is like; non existent. Lmao great review though guys
The fast travel in year of the dragon was previously available in year of the dragon? Huh?
Yaasss! Was waiting for this one
Completely ignoring the fact that each of the home worlds in Spyro 2 are based on seasons like summer forest, autumn plains or winter tundra?
The weakest link in this review is the criticism of the game’s musical score
Okay what is up with people mixing remaster with remake. This is clearly a remake not a remaster?
This is a remaster
They really need to make a Spyro Tv series
They made a Skylanders spinoff? Kappa
Ja'Crispy spyro was in skylanders? Kappa
Its not a skylanders spinoff ._.
TOTO LPS (notice the kappa)

Was that cutscene supposed to be an example of the humor missing its mark? Because it didn't. It's the same black Insomniac humor I also loved in the original Ratchet and Clank trilogy
God, imagine the ratchet and clank trilogy getting this treatment, staying with 60fps and the original score... But completely new ue4 graphics. I could die.
Did the reviewer even know you can change the music in the option settings lol
Bring this to the PC and you'll get my buy just like crash bandicoot... Do the same with the the Jak series (with or without Jak x) and all the old Rachets please, would buy that in a heartbeat.
The Pirate Bay sells games now?
@@ernec.5326 Yeah, for $25.99 thanksgiving sale, nice try though.
When he says the music is weak, I can’t tell if he means it’s weak compared to the originals’ soundtracks or if he just finds them weak in general.
The next remake needs to be Banjo-Kazooie.
Too bad.
I like the dark humor cutscenes...
Where's the Tetris Effect review? It's just a bit weird as Ben said it was one of the best games of the year for him.
Is there a mode to play with the original graphics
The Spyro trilogy has some of the most memorable soundtracks of all time. Were you reaching for criticism, or?
Ohhh good old memories!!!!!!!!!!!
Spyro Reignited Trilogy is awesome.
Will it come to pc
Ain't no damn way I just heard someone crap on Spyro's soundtrack
are these games still a remaster? they seem to be a complete remake to me
It's a remake for sure.
Strongly disagree, re: the soundtrack. And the cutscenes aren't that bad.
Great Review 😊👍
Does anyone know what easy allies means exactly?
it is a remake not a remaster. a remaster reuses the code of the older games and only improving on graphics (and some controls and maybe some code). this was completly remade, everything is newly reconstructed and recoded. so not a remaster but a remake. that is an important distinction between the two.
With Smash Ultimate right around the corner, I'm gonna wait for a sale for this game
Can’t wait for the Switch port.
Sad to see no credible review outlet mentioning the motion blur. I don't want to fully disable it entirely from the game but a toggle would be nice. There's too much in this trilogy and it gives me a headache during game play when you realize that this trilogy of remastered games also introduces horrible frame pacing.
Oh nice suprise.
and the wait for PC port begins
I would love to See sly ratchet and clank and so in
As a pc remaster...
The meme score 8/10
All these releasing remakes and FFVII is still in development hell.
Easy Allies first review I disagree. The game deserves more praise.
