Always enjoy watching these videos! I'm a massive fan of P90 Jr style guitars.
That 'sitar' effect is from the nut slot, which is why you don't hear it once you fret in front of it. It's either cut slightly too wide so the string is buzzing side to side slightly in the slot, or the break angle of the slot doesn't match the angle of the string breaking over the nut (causing it to move the take off point backwards towards the tuners and buzz up and down).
Run a fret file inside it to amend the slot break angle, or use an old 10 gauge high E string, rough it up with some 800 grit paper and then use that string as a wire rasp to correct it. 👍

    • @robertorochamartinsrocha7041
      @robertorochamartinsrocha7041 2 года назад

I had the almost same problem with a Fender, it happens.
I had also a buzz almost like a sitar that runs all the strings and it was the tunners...
      Best regards

This is fast becoming my favourite guitar channel on RUclips. I appreciate the time and effort you put into the videos. Great production, coupled with a warmth/charm that's highly enjoyable to watch. I love the fact that you allow the video to breathe and you go into amazing depth. I really like the fact that the videos have a slower pace without some obnoxious gobshite waffling away with a video edited like a 6 year old on a sugar rush. Us guitar nerds love going into all the measurements, details and stuff that actually affects playability. Superb video and I'm enjoying diving into the channels back catalogue of videos.

E string, easily fixed with 2 small shim-slivers to level the bridge and remove its forward lean. Place one atop the bridge, at its rear, under the adjuster screw and the second one beneath the bridge, at its front, across the open U. .010" should work to level the treble side and eliminate the "sitar" sounding. I've had to do this on a PRS SE with a tilted forward bridge and it works! I cut up a .010 gauge from a rusted gauge set, using scissors to cut the shims to size. It gave me the excuse to buy a new $5 thickness gauge set that wasn't rusted. Happy tunes!

    • @davidcudlip6587
      @davidcudlip6587 3 месяца назад

Another trick is using those "C" shape snap washers that clip around a post. They come in all kinds of imperial or metric sizes. There's a video on the tube showing this as a fix for this very problem of bridge tilt on certain wrap around tailpieces. Clipping them on the post under the bridge prevents tilt.

Vintage guitars are nearly all great I have 5 a SG,Tele,LP, Jazzmaster and a 335 style they are all great but like you say need a little setup string height etc and the LP could maybe do with different pickups but all really well made and great playability. The only other guitars that are maybe better for similar money are the Sire L7 S7 H7 and T7 they really are amazing 🤘 Great in depth review as always👍

Yet again Colin, you have out done yourself. Brilliant video. What I have found with the Wilkinson wrap around bridges, to make them a bit better and stop the sitaring. Find a couple small aluminum washers, cut an opening and slide them under the bridge in front of the posts. This keeps the bridge level and keeps the tilt from happening. I've done this with my Les Paul junior DC and it's been perfect ever since. So give that a try. I'm sure it will help with intonation and the sitar effect. Cheers 🍻

    What a cracking wee guitar!
I'd be quite tempted by an SG type one (I'm a bit jealous of Brandon! Only joking, it's good to see the kids getting into it!)
Nice to hear a bit of Bankrobber action.
As I think has been mentioned by others, the sitar effect could be a nut issue - my Jazzmaster has worn down in the high E so I need to put a piece of paper in the slot under the string until I can spring for a new nut to be installed (oh well, I suppose 36 years isn't too bad for a nut!)

Sweet axe! My Jr has a humbucker and I just love the guitar! The neck is one of the best I currently have, and it stays in tune forever!! Which is surprising because after a month in hospital I came home and went straight for my Jr, then when I opened the case I was horrified to see the neck had cracked just below the headstock!
Of course nobody knew how that could have happened!
I repaired it with Gorilla wood glue which is as strong or stronger than any wood glue I've ever used, and I was a cabinet maker for years so I used a TON of glue!
The repair was solid, as I made certain to get glue as deep into the break as was possible.
After some sanding, it was actually far better at staying in tune than before the break!!?? It never goes out of tune now, go figure!!
I am jonesing for a P90 Jr now...thanks Colin my wife will be thrilled!! ")

Hi Colin! For the price this doesn't seem like a bad deal. It sounds good. I also like the headstock. That's not so important but it does look cool. The thing I found the most interesting is the area around the neck joint. That's good access to the upper frets. It looked good without the pickuard too. Overall, it seems like a decent buy.

Awesome video as always Colin. Yeah never pass up a p90 guitar it's the law mate.
Okroshka soupe, I befriend a Ukrainian refugee who make this wonderful cucumber soupe that's really tasty.
The interesting thing about that pickup is it's a p90 stacked with another coil to be hum canceling. The coil is a dummy coil that essential gives a p90 like sound with hum canceling of a humbucker.
However it's not a one way street. The dummy coil adds to the DC resistance of pickup changing it's frequency response. It's a trade off basically.

I have the blue version of this with sunburst underneath. I’ve gigged with it several times. It’s light. Cuts through the mix. Set up was off. Action to high. The posts like yours were to high and truss rod needed slight adjustment.Changed the bridge for a lightning bridge. Changed the nut. I also had that noise on high E string but most was down to the nut not being cut correctly and the channel where the string goes was way to deep. Once changed to Wilkinson lightning bridge and changed nut was spot on .New strings as well and all sounds good now. May rewire it at some point. Good review. Least this one doesn’t smell lol. 😂😂 Think the set up at vintage is awful but once you’ve sorted it you have a great guitar.good start to the weekend cheers

Hi Colin. All JMO: Videography: Came through on auto@1080p on my V OK 4K TV. Switched to 2160P and not much, if any, difference. The 1080p voodoo though was good chit as whatever virtual ink you are using meant it was SEHR GUT. Sound: also excellent and this made your superb playing v enjoyable. Guitar: cracker for the money as a set neck. I do wonder if a capo on the 3rd fret and a feeler gauge might be worth it to check the nut but agree most likely that bridge (sloping too much v obviously). I would probably go a solid colour if the same or less money (less might be possible I think)or just paint it for fun. Sets up and intonates fine (with some knowledge) it seems..................V enjoyable and thought-provoking as ever. Cheers, Jim (or James or whatever as I answer to many things LOL).

The reason the pickup doesn't sound very pokey compared to the Billy Joe Armstrong P90 or indeed any P90 around 8k is that in a stacked design only the top coil contributes to the sound to any degree, the bottom one only cancels out the hum. So that 14k of coil resistance is spread between two coils but with only one doing the 'lifting'. So the coils are likely spread 8k top coil and 6k bottom coil. Trouble is the resistance of the second coil 'loads' the pickup causing treble roll off and compression without adding anything to the party.
How do I know this? I manufacture guitar pickups.

Another good review. The sharp line between the black color and the red undercoat and the similarity in pattern between different guitars leads me to suspect that they use a stencil template. Paint the base color, apply the stencils, paint the top color, remove the stencils. I agree that some judicious sanding and scuffing will make it seem less "manufactured".

Cup of Assam Tea, no snacks (watching the waistline on the run up to letting things go over the Xmas period). The guitar looks good although I prefer the gun blue over sunburst. I quite like Vintage guitars, I've got two a strat and the les paul I bought from you, both are really nice looking and play really well. The second hand prices of Vintage guitars are no brainer affordable.

I've always wondered if these are the same as the even lower priced Harley Bentons.

I sold Vintage brand guitars for about 7 or 8 years. They are, IMHO, one of the best values out there.

Aloha and mahalo Colin! I would call it accidentally on purpose. It appears Vintage brand seems to make some great affordable guitars. I seen some model I would be interested in. Great info. P100 stacked coils noise cancelling pickup. Can do a Eric Johnson and just keep it a single COIL.

Great Colin. When you're giving it a 280 grit massage, maybe pop the other tailpiece on for a comparison. ??
I'd be tempted to leave the guard holes as well. Make it a proper rat!

Great review Colin. but one thing that pees me off and this is the fault of the shops sending these guitars out, is a guitar out the box needing sending straight to a expert for setup. Lets not forget a lot of people buying these will be new player and could be put off playing what is a fantastic hobby by a guitar with a c**p setup.
I remember my first guitar, not long ago, a chapman, man the strings were about a inch of the fret board, and in the 3 months i had it i hardly played it.
Now if i buy a new guitar, i go to the shop and don;'t leave without checking the guitar first.

I have the same problem with that bridge , you can lower it and put it vertically. The sitar on high e . I have the gun metal blue distressed, and I thought that pickup was so aggressive! Didn’t thought that it could be p100. Thank you for letting me know 😂❤

Colin, thank You for all the great reviews. Could You possibly make an episode on Gordon-Smith Guitars? They are British handmade guitars, too often forgotten. There was a time when for example Nicke Anderson used one of those as a main guitar and it always sounded great, and it looked even cooler Best Regards -Jani-

If you get the sitar sound only on the open string wouldn't that mean it's the nut? Make sure the nut slot is clean and well cut. If there is any debris in the nut slot you will have that problem, or if there is a bump in the slot of any kind. Clean it with a toothbrush or similar brush and maybe use a credit card to try to clean it. If that doesn't work get a nut file and try filing it lightly at the proper angle because a nut slot that is not slightly angled backward can also be a problem.

There's never enough junior reviews, is it? Not for me at least 😉 I like your summary at the end what is good about the guitar and what needs upgrading. Very comprehensive and useful! I can relate to the "good barebones" concept very much, but here I'd probably like another color (probably the cherry or matte black without the unconvincing relic job, which they don't sell - pity), also don't like the pointy horn. That's why I bought the Harley Benton DC fat junior in cherry. Very happy with it for the money, just needs another nut, pickup and the electronics may need an upgrade as well 😉 Cheers Colin!

A thin mahogany scratch plate in dark cherry would be quite nice methinks. (or tortoiseshell) A very cool guitar, I do prefer the juniors precisely because they look less flash ( and are lighter of course).

Throw in some wiring and a Dylan P-90 it’ll sound amazing! Can easily flatten the pickguard set it on a cookie sheet set a Pyrex baking dish flat on top and put in the oven on low heat. Doesn’t take much and it will flatten right out.

Hey man, like you said, it is a Stacked P90, it is build for Hum Canceling.
I own the Vintage Vs6mrp the SG Junior you show us, you can split that P90 with a split Poti to use both, that SG also got that one, it is called Wilkinson (B) W90SKB, for Stacked Bridge.
The more Humbucker sound or the pure P90, Harley Benton did this on the DC Junior Fat Version.
Gibson did that also on the Brian Ray White SG Junior, but they hide that Part under the Pickguard.

One more thing….the sitar effect your getting is directly because of your post lean…the high E is buzzing against the massive “platform” of a bridge.
