When you started blowing into the bowl to check the needle, it really took me back to when I was a kid and nobody wanted to mess with fuel injection but only 5 or 6 old guys really knew how to set up a carb in my area. I was friends with most of them, but I took it for granted that they'd always be there and now I find myself re-learning basics for a current project. Learned automatic transmissions and teach others what I can, so it might come full circle at some point. Just wanted to thank you however after the numerous sketchy videos that I've watched or the "professional" people that don't want to spill their "secrets". Straight shooter, glad I found this. You are making a positive difference.

I cracked up that after explaining everything you say “it’s really pretty simple”
Lmao still trying to understand haha
But love the way you do your videos man

Many methods have been used throughout history to determine whether or not a person was a witch. My own test is for a person to explain the black magic of carburetors. You sir, must be a general in the witch army.

Should hear his automatic transmission break down he did for the Blazer he built...

I watched the entire blazer series, and was impressed with your knowledge, especially considering your age, but after that explanation, I'm in awe

watching this video, i am quickly finding out that fuel injection is way easier than carburetors...

I wouldn't say so, it's just that the complexity is somewhere else (in the wiring). Carburetors are a more simple system, and require very few parts/systems external to them, while electronic fuel injection requires a lot of sensors and wires and of course a computer to function. Of course there are a lot of benefits to having all those sensors and the computer, but there is easily as much (and usually much more) complexity there as in a carburetor.

fuel injection only requires a map or maf sensor, an oxygen sensor and a crank angle sensor. at least one of those is present in any engine ;) and the mechanics of what you describe in this episode move from physical linkages, pressure manifolds, rudimentary analogue computers and venturi, into software- where the process becomes a lot more repeatable, less complex relatively speaking and actually much simpler.
The ecu's required to do this kin of thing are actually becoming very cheap with the dawn of opensource in this area, the wiring is actually not that much more complex, if not less so than some carburettor setups i have seen on your episodes. sorry for the rant, systems engineer here.

Well, a bare-minimum EFI system like a Holley Terminator (or the newcomer which seems promising, FiTech) really isn't bad, but an OEM fuel injection system (especially one 10+ years old) is far more complex than even a complicated carburetor. TBI is pretty much as simple as EFI gets and when I removed it from my S10 it allowed me to pull dozens of things off the engine and the wire loom. There is one (optional) wire to a Holley/AFB carb, to control the electric choke if equipped (depending on how you switch that choke, maybe 3-4 wires elsewhere in the engine bay). With a mechanical fuel pump, no wires/relays/switches needed there. Every EFI system I have extensively dug into (7M, 2JZ, L28, TBI) has been a nightmare of wires, vacuum hoses, coolant passages, and sensors (less so for TBI, but it still has been problematic). And you'd think the L28 would have been simple because of it's age (no 02 sensor!) but it is still a mess.
A clean (but quite expensive) aftermarket carburetor-footprint EFI system is incredibly straightforward compared to all of that, but still necessitates careful wiring and setup in the same way a carburetor does. You're just spending the time elsewhere and the money on a (theoretically) self-tuning setup. Also, keep in mind that comparing a new-in-box EFI setup like that to a carburetor bought and rebuilt for $30 isn't fair and a more apt comparison would be a new-in-box carburetor, which wouldn't require disassembly or nearly as much fiddling.

+Fuzzy Dice Projects i see that you don't use the large vacuum outlet at the back of the base plate. you have it plugged off. are you not running a pcv valve? to set the primary throttle plates to the correct position there needs to be an open vacuum source at the large outlet at the rear of the base plate. trust me, you need vacuum sourced by a pcv valve and then the front throttle blades are closed to the proper idle position.

That looks like a late model Holley with the two piece quick change vacuum secondary housing. I bet it's a Street Avenger 770 or 870.

5:58 That's called a "Jesus clip" because if you fumble it and it goes bouncing on the garage floor into oblivion, you will take the Lord's name in vain.
