This song tells a story of tough times and strength, inspired by a woman named Veronika of Desenice, a tragic figure from Slovenian history wrongly accused of witchcraft and drowned. It shows how women today may face struggles in being true to themselves. The message is simple: "I am, you are Veronika."

Veronika refers to the second wife of a medieval count from modern-day Slovenian city of Celje. She was accused and tried as a witch, proven innocent but subsequently drowned/murdered by her father-in-law, the powerful Count of Celje. This explains the water element in the video. Her point is that we are all Veronikas (= I am, you are Veronika). Greetings from Slovenia.

Raiven finished the music accadamy and is the professional opera singer and an electronic pop artist. The song idea is based on Veronika Deseniška who married the count of Celje. The father in law, the actual count was not happy she married his son due to her status not beeing good enough, and he accused her to be witch. This was the first recorded witch process in Slovenia in 1400s. The court didn't find her guilty, but in the end she was killed by drowning due the orders of the count. The song doesn't use the Veronika's story directly, just as an idea. The song is about women beeing accused and prosecuted when not conforming.

The story of the love between Count Friderik II and Veronika of Desenice is one of the greatest love stories in Slovenian history. He was the son of a powerful ruler, while she was a rural noblewoman. Their love was so strong that nothing could stop it. Raiven found inspiration for the track while researching the fates of iconic women and specifically Veronika Deseniška: a mysterious figure in Slovenian history whose ambiguity made Raiven retreat from reality into a calmer, inner world. The song is based on Veronika Deseniška (Veronika of Desenice), the second wife of Frederick the Second, Duke of Celje. Veronika was not of royal descent, and Hermann II, Frederick’s father, did not initially approve of the marriage. He kidnapped his son and accused Veronica of witchcraft, of which she was later acquitted.

From what I gathered Veronica was accused for witchcraft by her father-in-law who was a governor or a king (I don't remember), because he didn't like her for his son. Although the court declaired her not guilty the father in law gave an order to drown her in the region's river. About song Veronika (to maybe understand this drowning, bodies and all the water more): The story of the love between Count Friderik II and Veronika of Desenice is one of the greatest love stories in Slovenian history. He was the son of a powerful ruler, while she was a rural noblewoman. Their love was so strong that nothing could stop it.
Rumour has it that Frederick II of Celje, son of the mighty Count Herman II, had a hand in the death of Elizabeth of Frankopan, his first and legal wife. Contrary to his father’s will he secretly married Veronica of Desenice immediately afterwards. Because of this, his father had him imprisoned in the main tower, where he spent over 4 years and where, according to a legend, he wanted to starve him. Meanwhile, after being acquitted in the first witchcraft process in Slovenia initiated by this sly old Count, Veronica was drowned. Herman II accused unfortunate Veronika of being a witch who had cast a spell on his son and he was 100% sure that's why his son killed his first wife and married Veronika.
I'm Slovenian and I'm soooo proud of Raiven (her real name Sara Briški Cirman). She is fenomenal artist, musician, (opera) singer, and excellent harpist. I love her and her capacity of knowledge of music. She is really next level artist. Go RAIVEN 🤍🤍🤍

It is about a young girl, named Veronica of Desenice, in SI 🇸🇮: Veronika Deseniška, who in 1422 married Friderik II, Count of Celje, Lord of the Slovenian Land and Prince of the Holy Roman Empire. Frederick's father Herman II was strongly against the marriage. He then accuses her of trying to poison his son. And that she is a witch and is trying to possess him. The court acquitted her. Despite the court's verdict, she was imprisoned in Ojstrica Castle and murdered by drowning in a bathtub, according to Herman II's ruling.😊 big fan, by the way 🍀👋

The song was inspired by the story of Veronika Deseniška, Local Slovenian folklore and history. She was of lower birth but married a son of a local count in the 1400s. She was accused of witchcraft by her father-in-law, but later acquitted at trial. She was still murdered by drowning by the old guy though. Bottom line the song is about, the ongoing persecution of women...Im finally happy with our entry this year!

    Translation of the lyrics:
I hid in the river and went into the silent night.
With loud steps, silent calls for help.
Now that I'm just water in the waves, I'm looking for peace.
I drown in myself, surrender to the light.
Chorus: Find me, hurt me, defend me (when you chase me, when you leave me)
Pick me up, let me down, love me. (Who's chasing you so you're not afraid?)
Who are you afraid of hiding your desires?
You look into my eyes, the image of you glows in them.
I'm a mirror without edges, only a reflection of your fears!
Chorus: Find me, hurt me, defend me (when you chase me, when you leave me)
Pick me up, let me down, love me. (Who's chasing you so you're not afraid?)
    I am, you are VERONIKA!
    Only she knows your truth.
    I am, you are VERONIKA!
    Only she knows your truth.
    I am, you are VERONIKA!

This song is about a famous slovenian tale, where a woman "Veronika of Desenice", was wrongly put up for witch trials due to the love that she had with the King's son. They thought 'Veronika' was a witch, because a 'beggar' would never attract a member of royalty. She was wrongfully trialled, and although it was proven that she was NOT a witch, she still was ordered to be killed (drowned) by the King.

Veronika of Desenice died 17 October 1425)[1] was the second wife of Frederick II, Count of Celje.
Veronika was of lesser status,[1] and Frederick's father Hermann II was greatly opposed to the marriage. The chronicles of the Counts of Celje suggest he had his son arrested and, while holding him prisoner, initiated a trial against Veronika accusing her of witchcraft. She was acquitted by the court.
Despite the court's ruling, she was incarcerated in Ojstrica Castle near Tabor and murdered (supposedly on the orders of Hermann II) by drowning in 1425.

It is supposed to be a real historical person. Veronika Deseniška (1380 - 1425) was the second wife of Frederick II. of Celje, but since she was a noblewoman of a lower status, Friderik's father, the powerful Count Herman II of Celje, did not approve of their union. When Friderik and Veronika fled to Fridrihštajn castle near Kočevje, where they secretly got married, old Herman sent an army after them with the order to capture them. Friderik managed to save Veronika from the castle, but he was captured by the soldiers and imprisoned in the tower at Celje Castle - this is still called Friderik's Tower. He was imprisoned here for more than four years, Veronica was also captured and imprisoned. Herman accused the unhappy Veronika of being a prostitute who seduced his son. They organized a trial that lasted two days, and although the judges found no guilt, let alone a crime, Herman had her murdered. he basically accused her of witchery and drowned her.

    Based on true events:
Veronika was the second wife of Friderik II. of Celje, first woman in Slovenia accused of witchcraft by her father-in-law.
Friderik went into hiding with Veronika, while his father searched for them. Friderik was lured into a trap by his brother-in-law Sigismund, King of Hungary, Holy Roman Emperor. He was taken to his father while the search for Veronika continued. She hid in the wilderness for some time in great distress and misery. After she was caught, she was put on trial and with some help of a good advocate, acquitted. Still she was then imprisoned by her father-in-law and later murdered, drowned in a bath tub in the castle that was her prison.

Veronica in this song is referring to the first women in Slovenian history to be put down for a witch trial. Her story goes as follows. Prince is having marriage issues and then falls in love with Veronika. King not very happy so arrests them both. She is pit on a witch trial because according to the King "she manipulated his son into loving her". But the difference in her story is that she survives. She doesn't get killed like many other women to come. She had a good Lawyer who got the judges to judge her not guilty. She lived happily ever after. But sadly she was kidnapped and drowned. This song describes her story but is trying to apply to 21st century women. Hope this gives context to what the Song is about.

To my knowledge the song is called “Veronica” after Veronika of Desenice, the first woman to be tried for Witchcraft in Slovenia.
In the lyrics there is a repeating part that translated to English is “I am, You are, Veronika”
so it’s kinda a witchy feminist song

Well kinda... The Veronica that Raiven talks about is the first slovenian acussed of witchcraft by the count of Celje, because his son ran away with Veronika (they were in love). She was later cleared of charges but was still assassinated. The song has the lyrics "I am, you are Veronika" which basicly confirms that the song is about how women still expirience simular type of predjudice and are mistreated in society. Its a feminist song based on a woman who was falsly acused of witchcraft

It is about love which was cruelly prevented by a witchcraft process against Veronica, at the end she was drowned. (A real Slovene historical story from 15th century). She was the second wife of the count Frederic II. of Celje. Her name was Veronika of Desenice. Frederic never recovered from the loss.

It is supposed to be a real historical person, Veronika Deseniška (1380 - 1425), the first woman on Slovenian grounds accused of witchcraft. was the second wife of Frederick II. of Celje, but since she was a noblewoman of a lower status, Friderik's father, the powerful Count Herman II of Celje, did not approve of their union. He was imprisoned here for more than four years; Veronica was also captured and imprisoned. Herman accused the unhappy Veronika of being a prostitute who seduced his son. They organized a trial that lasted two days, and although the judges found no guilt, let alone a crime, Herman had her murdered. he basically accused her of witchery and drowned her

The song despite a very high level production and a very aesthetic clip does not have a melody that we remember. I do not see a winner or even a place in the top ten.🐸

Georgina, I think it's high time you learnt one of the Slavic languages. That way you'll understand the lyrics and enjoy them more! ☺☺The good thing is is that all of those languages are pretty similar. So, if you learn Serbian, let's say, you'll understand Croatian, Slovenian, Macedonian, Montenegrin, Bosnian, etc. Most of these are political languages anyway. 😅

In the future, before U post anything, just do your homework about the details of the song/entry/video, you're commenting on, without commenting of what you don't know, (about 10 times). Just shows your ignorance, (so typical of Brexiters) 😂

The whole point is a first reaction. Why would I do homework first?
