We all have our own opinions, so here are mine; my rankings -
    9. TM 4 (D grade): 4 is fine for what it is and isn't a bad game, it's just not a good "Twisted Metal" game. It's too far removed from the rest of the series, too off the rails and outlandish with everything new 989 tried to cram into it for me to appreciate it as part of the TM series.
    8. TM 3 (C grade): 989 had it somewhat right with TM 3. Compared to 4, it's boosted up two grades for them making the effort to make it fit in with the rest of the series as an attempted sequel to TM2, but is dropped a grade to C for how terrible and juvenile its character stories and ending are.
    7. TM '95 (B grade): As good as a start to the series as we could hope for. The way the game controls is jank but I find it charming enough to still enjoy it. I love it for how strongly and how well they establish the world and characters of TM.
    6. TM Lost (B grade): Ranked separately from Head-On because I feel like the Lost content is unique enough to do so. Lost functions well and it's really cool to see what the cancelled Harbor City could have been like, it's just a shame that this is all there is and we never got anything more to follow up from Black (not counting Harbor City betas on PC).
    5. Small Brawl (B grade): Small Brawl is a lot of fun and I love how they translate TM from full-scale battles to RC cars. Level design is great, but to nitpick: I'm not a fan of a handful of the car designs, some feeling rushed or not thought out enough, very little of the vehicles' specials feel impactful or memorable, and some aspects of the game's overall presentation doesn't feel done well enough.
    4. TM Head-On (B grade): HO is a cool combination of Black's gameplay with being a storyline sequel to TM2, but it's not as good as either for one reason that sticks with me: it's too dang easy. The vehicle upgrades make you too overpowered, combined with not facing very many enemies per level makes the lack of difficulty memorable in a bad way.
    3. TM 2 (A grade): My opinion the best PS1 TM game and the one I played most as a kid, by choice. My nostalgic favorite, TM2 has my favorite character roster, a great art style with memorable endings, and a way that it blended perfectly its bright and colorful tone on the surface with the dark, violent, twisted reality of its world that lied underneath. The gameplay improved on from TM1 in every way, and has so much about it that's good that I can forgive how screwy the difficulty can be sometimes.
    2. TM2012 (A grade): On PS3, easily the best that the gameplay has ever been. By far the funnest to play because of that. The difficulty is balanced well, the tone of the game is good embracing its "M" rating, visually it's beautiful; it's just a shame about it's story mode - with only 3 characters played in a linear fashion, it really lacks in replay value, story-mode wise. The cutscenes are made really well, but the endings are predictable. And the boss fights in story mode are atrocious.
    1. TM Black (S grade): Black is perfectly what TM should be. Dark, gritty, violent, grounded, dramatic, stories that last longer than thirty seconds, challenging but not too difficult, I could go on. Black is the perfect package of tone, setting, story, and gameplay. Supremely memorable down to every story beat, every quote, and every part of every level along the way. Easily the best overall TM experience one can delve into.

From worst to best my FAVORITE (not better, just a matter of personal taste):
    1, Black, 3, 2012, 4, 2, Small Brawl, Head-on.
    I NEVER return to 1.
Black color pallet makes the game too boring to play for long periods of time to me. And the tone is a little too serious for a Twisted Metal game in my opinion.
3 endings are shit, and it's annoying turning over all the time. Also, Club Kid is a crime.
2012 has great asthetics. I just didn't played it much to be nostalgic over it.
4 is great... But it has one major flaw in my opinion, too much charaters with similar or identical specials. Also bad re-designs such as Grim and Minion. And it lacks my favorite car, Spectre.
2 is amazing. I can't complain about it. It has it's defects, but it's prime Twisted Metal gameplay and story telling.
Small Brawl has awsome levels and a great gameplay. Most of the endings are fun for a less mature game hehe
Head-on is to me 2 on steroids. It's the best game by virtue of being a continuation of the best game before it (not counting Small). The only issue I have with it is the lack of Minion. I consider it the real Twsited Metal 3 hehe
PS: I HATE holand in 2 for being boring. I love moscow for being a great arena for 1x1 PVP hehe

My ranking (I won't be including 3, 4 and Small Brawl. They weren't released overseas so I haven't been able to play them):
    5. TM 1995: Fun, but extremely outdated compared to the sequels.
    4. TM 2: Good game and a big improvement over the first game, but the physics are too bouncy and the ai keeps spamming freeze missile.
    3. TM Head On: Probably the game I have the most nostalgia for. The levels are great, I like a lot of the music, the controls are extremely smooth and game has my favourite challenge mode due to being able to add duplicates. Though the game is too easy and lacks depth compared to Black and 2012. If you want more challenge I recommend playing challenge mode and selecting Dark Tooth as a opponent.
Sidenote, the final boss is harder on the PSP version due to him having a extra attack. The napalm weapon is also too overpowered in the PS2, due to it always doing 20 damage, while the PSP napalm depends on distance.
    2. TM 2012: I love this game. The gameplay is phenomenal, the music is fantastic (original and licensed) and the levels are fantastic. The only reasons why this game isn't first is because of the recycled specials and glitches (like junkyard dog's cars falling through the floor and remote bombs through wall).
    1. TM Black: The gameplay is basically perfect in my eyes. Gone is the jankiness of 1995 and 2, freeze missile spam is no longer a problem. The level design is phenomenal, the roster is amazing (my favourite in the series) and gameplay is full of depth. Keep in mind that I played the European version, so I am not taking the story into account.

I have a hard time ranking Twisted Metal games, because I love them all and have such great memories of every game, but ill try
1 - TM4, this game has my favourite characters, some of my favourite car designs, some of the best maps, a killer soundtrack, and more boss battles than my brajn knew what to do with. The overall aesthetic of this game was amazing, it was dark but fun, it had futuristic and historical features, like how some cars were older like Warthog's WW1 tank and Mr. Grimms pirate ship car, but also had the modern and futuristic cars like Quatros bike and Orbitals Mclaren. This game was an amalgamation of Twisted Metal's future and past into a warped thrillride of a game. We got previous characters like Sweet Tooth, Slam, Auger, Thumper, and Minion, with new bosses like Crusher, Moon Buggy, and RC car. We got levels like the bedroom and construction yard, Neon city, Road Rage and the oil rig, we got all new characters like the Jones' and Pizza Boy and Rob Zombie, plus finally we can play as Calypso
This one was my only choice for #1
2 - TM3, I played this game religiously with my father, he got it for me for Christmas by hiding it in the tree, and I have the most memories of this game with him than any other TM game, but I have to admit some character designs, car designs, and the endings are lackluster, but the levels are fun, the memories and ingrained into me, and I would have given anything to spend hours driving the cars and fighting endlessly in the character select warehouse free for all with invincibility like they had, it just seemed like complete carnage and I loved it (I know you can play in that warehouse, but you dont get to fight every car)
Also it had amazing levels and the best soundtrack ever
3 - Small Brawl, I loved this game, this was when I started playing Twisted Metal almost completely solo, because it came out later, my father and step brother had stopped playing as much, but I loved the endings, the level designs are among the best in the series, Tree Top Rumble, Meat Your Maker, and Easy Death Oven are the best, it was just like when I would make a Twisted Metal tournament with my Hot Wheels cars, but this game brought it to life for me.
4 - Head-On, I actually just replayed this last week, and I love this game, it has my favourite Hammerhead design, and its got the weapons coming out of panels on the cars, good boss battles, but it also has some disappointing levels and Dark Tooth & Tower Tooth can be hard if youre a weaker car. I did love playing this on console and the PSP (the best handheld console ever) so even when i wasnt able to be home, Twisted Metal was still coming with me.
5 - TM2, this game I played so much, I loved the Antarctica level, Moscow, Paris, and Hong Kong, even though for awhile I had my Dad beat Dark Tooth for me because it scared me lol, but this has my favourite Mr. Slam design of all, amazing beautiful game
6 - TM 2012, I loved the insane levels like Black Rock Stadium & Sweet Tooths Carnival of Carnage, the boss battle with Hammerhead & Slayer, and Dollface's robot were all amazing, I loved the car designs, Sweet Tooths robot mode, and even the fact that we could pick 3 cars instead of stuck with 1, but I have to admit the story was disappointing along with the lack of characters
7 - TM 1, I played this one the least out of all of the games, mostly because I played 2 & Vigilante 8 more at the time, but still an awesome game
8 - Black, honestly No-Face scared me as a kid, but I also didnt enjoy the game as much, but I did love the way the weapons came out of the vehicles

I echo the sentiment on TM3, but you have to also mention how annoying it is for enemies to B-line it to health pickups when you have them nearly dead. Found myself constantly drag racing against them to have to unnecessarily pick them up when I'm near full just so they couldn't.

1, 3, and 4 are at the bottom because they lack the Hovercar controls that imo contribute a huge part into the appeal of Twisted Metal and itself arcade feel compared to more realistic car combat games.

Just beat small brawl with every character on hard its a okay game the weapons homing is trash and the the travel time of weapons is to slow as well the game is just slow overall i had more fun with tm 4.
Tmhead on just feels generic i wish i could like it but besides the character endings the gameplay and levels dont have soul and they are too easy
TM2 is great but i play hard clunky control games all the time because i collect retro games so i can master games like tm2
I think tm1 has more fun combat than small brawl but the ramming is too unforgiving in 1 and rear fire is hard not to play with
For me from what ive played this is my list so far
8: Twisted Metal Head On ( 100% Completed)
    7. Twisted Metal 3
6.Twisted Metal Small Brawl ( 100% Completed weapons are too inaccurate and matches last too long especially bosses)
    5. Twisted Metal 1(tm 3 and 1 are the ones that ill probably move lower or higher at some point)
    4. Twisted Metal 4 ( 100% Completed underrated twisted metal party game with unique levels and the biggest pickup weapon selection in the series)
    3. Twisted Metal PS3 ( great game with great levels but the characters are generic compared to older tm games)
    2. Twisted Metal 2 ( this game and black have the most soul out of every game the color palette is amazing and its just really iconic game can be unfair but when you destroy things in this game its so satisfying)
    1. Twisted Metal Black ( 100% completed just a game with really good stories and weapon physics level design etc. Just so fun to play this i like a challenge too so i have a lot of fun playing through this game)

Worst to best while I verbally poop on each game.
    8. TM4 - Interchangeable with 3 depending on the mood, soundtrack is more misses than hits.
    7. TM3 - Bad weapons, questionable physics, horrendous endings, bad graphics even for the time, great soundtrack.
    6. TM1 - Love so much about it but that feeling of not being finished really hurt it for me.
    5. TM Small Brawl - The duckstation works miracles because the disc version of the game is almost incomprehensible visually, some endings are too quick, So much fun otherwise and it really needs an online multiplayer mode.
    4. TM 2012 - 3 factions instead of a driver for each vehicle, some stages are too visually busy, the loss of the upload skins option, tedious boss battles, redundant vehicles. Still awesome gameplay.
    3. TM Head-On - The absolute worst soundtrack in the whole franchise, some dull stages, slightly washed out color palette.
    2. TM Black - Sometimes the morose gets too much and makes you jaded, different Minion between boss and playable character, some hits don't have gravitas.
    1. TM2 - Says Holland instead of Netherlands or Zaanse Schans, Moscow was a satellite dish not a missile silo, the lightning weapon only worked if you were looking at the source.

Damn dude, mad respect for your rankings. I have a lot of thoughts, and my ranking is VERY different from yours.
    8. Twisted Metal Head On- The only game in the series that I don’t like. I find the combat bland and boring. There’s no feeling of impact to any of the hits. And I hate the “15 points of damage” or whatever number indicators every time you do damage, it’s stupid.
    7. Twisted Metal Small Brawl- I think it’s awesome that you put this as your #1, this game is very underrated. The reason why it’s so far down for me is that compared to the other games in the series I don’t think it really excels at anything that the other games don’t do better. This game is very mid all the way through. A ton of fun, but I find that I forget about it often.
    6. Twisted Metal Black- Ok I’m prepared to get hate for this. Quality wise, this is the best game in the series objectively. It’s fantastic. But…I don’t like the combat. The “hit and run” style that the enemy cars do is very annoying and you rarely get in to massive battles with card piling up and stuff like in other games. These levels are also so huge that they don’t even feel like battle arenas. You see a car for a second then ir speeds away like it’s in a cartoon, I hate it. Everything runs away from you, it’s so annoying. Story is great, music is great, atmosphere is perfect, but the gameplay is weak. Just my opinion.
    5. Twisted Metal (PS3)- This game is awesome. Quite the opposite from Black, I find the gameplay here to be some of the best in the series. Where this game loses points is in the story. I definitely miss the “each character had its own story” angle, they dropped the ball with this one in that regard. Still a blast to play in death match though. But I see no reason to play the story again.
    4. Twisted Metal 4- This game is a classic. Very fun, very campy, endless deathmatch combinations with all the bosses, it’s just a blast. I have much of the same complaints as you do pretty much. But due me, the game is just too easy. Other than the final boss, there’s never any stakes. The game gives you like five lives, you can save after every level, and you can’t even pick a difficulty, the game just gets harder every time you beat it, which is a strange system in a game like this. For me, this one is a blast in co-op, but I rarely do single player play throughs anymore.
    3. Twisted Metal 1- I can’t believe you put this as your least favorite. That is insane to me. This game is amazing. And you learn to appreciate it for how strategic it is when you attempt to beat the game on every difficulty with every character. I’ve done it…it’s tough but not TM2 or TM Black tough. This game is perfect difficulty, the driving is smooth as heck (no idea where you get the bad controls from), it’s grounded, this is the only game that has very sparse supernatural elements, it feel like an underground club that you’re not supposed to be in, the atmosphere of this game is just perfect. I love everything about it. It’s just…maybe a little TOO simple. Also no co-op hurts it.
    2. Twisted Metal 2- I hate this game. For all the reasons you mentioned I hate it. It’s ridiculously difficult, the enemy cars are cheap, the controls are by far the worst in the series, it’s like you’re on ice, it’s just awful. BUT…from a car combat destruction standpoint, man it’s just so satisfying. Blowing up cars in this game never gets old. The stages are absolutely awesome and epic, this game is crazy. One might say it’s “Twisted”. Out of every game in the series, this game definitely fits its name. This game is on crack. I hate it but damn is it fun.
Twisted Metal 3- Screw the haters, this is in my top 10 games of all time. The physics are perfect, the destruction is awesome, from a pick up and play perspective it has by far the most replayability, I can play this game for hours and hours and not get bored. Yeah the levels are kinda weak but who cares. So much fun, it’s amazing.

Man other than the goofy characters in 4,it is second best to THE best game, and that is mainly due to how much you can learn and do in 4. Everyone hates minions maze,Maze, that map was excellently designed with the playstyle if you've mastered it. Use remote bombs and turbo, and you can fly and fight like call of duty advanced warfare. There are also wall glitches where you can go out of the map on certain levels(big one is neon city. You can go out of the map. Look it up. Its kinda cool traveling through the walls shooting at people). It just mechanically is superior to all except black and small brawl. Except for frame rate drops on goggle eyes, thumper and sweet tooth

My rankings are pretty much consensus but here goes.
    8) TM4: I hated this game even as a kid. Everything about it. Soundtrack, controls, roster and the aesthetic in general.
    7) SB: Played it for a couple hours and never touched it again. Has aged incredibly poorly.
    6) TM3: Loved this one as a kid but I now see just how bad the physics are. AI is also super dumb and are basically just bullet sponges that try and snipe the health packs. Almost unplayable.
    5) TM1: I agree it feels unfinished but it's the one that started it all and that soundtrack is insanely good. It's lacking a lot of stuff like 2 player Co Op though.
    4) Head On: I hate easy games and this game just feels really slow overall. The levels are too big and feel empty with the AI being too passive. Everything else is great but those are massive flaws that bring the game down. A few tweaks could turn it into the best in the series.
    3) 2012: The best gameplay and multiplayer when it worked. Story mode is a huge con but understandable given Sony rushed them. That's a deal breaker for some but as a multiplayer only game it was fantastic.
    2) TM2: It's janky but I really don't get your other criticisms here. The AI is aggressive but very predictable. Just don't sit there and brawl and you should be able to win without continues. Watch how others play compared to your gameplay and you'll see what you're doing wrong. No death runs are very possible even with frail characters like Twister.
    1) Black: Not my favorite aesthetic but it has the best combo of gameplay and story. This and Head On are the only games that feel finished but this one is a lot more fast a frenetic as TM should be.

My favorite game in the series is Black. Absolutely love the fast paced nature of the game. I definitely wish that health came back more frequently, not necessarily giving more health, but just regen quicker.
Second is Head-On. It's on of the best for people new to the series and I had a lot of fun with the game as a kid. That being said for me it was honestly hard going back to after I played Black realizing just how easy and slow paced the game is. It's not a bad thing, but it does make it a little boring with overpowered you can get.
I guess Third is Small Brawl. I only played a little of the game at a cousins house as a kid, I never owned it. I wish I could say more about it other than it was my introduction to the series since I can't remember much else.

Edit: Played '12, I enjoyed it, and yeah my rankings are pretty generic, TM2 has become my 2nd favorite, the worst I can say about it is I don't like how the big vehicles control and the A.I. is cheap, the only reason the 989 games are at bottom is mostly just cus of the twitchy cars and sensitive handling, aside from that I don't hate them (well maybe 3 a lil), TM1 and TM4 are good, they just have tough competition
Edit2: I've noticed some more things I don't like about 2, one of which being that cars go flying into the air too much and another being Moscow is unplayable no matter how much I improve at the game also FREEZESPAM, still my 2nd fav tho. My opinion on 2012 definitely changed a lot, at first I enjoyed it, but by the time I got to the second race I didn't not enjoy it very much, too much of a mixed bag so I'm lowering my ranking

    TM Harbor City (unfinished content)
    TM HO
    TM
    TM Black
Haven't played small brawl but I want to.
    TM3&4 doesn't make the list.
TM2 is my top pick because of the driving physics, the ramming physics, art style, soundtrack. Plus it has my 2 favorite TM arenas. Suicide slide (so much death and destruction in such a tiny space) and NYC rooftops. The trick to it really is getting used to the physics. Once you do, you can just go crazy and it's a blast
TM Black is my bottom because the art style and sountrack indulged way too much in the darker aspect. It's just depressing to me. The cars feel like toys, no ramming physics (it's fatal flaw imo. I could have adjusted if they had gotten that right). Arenas are way too big, just like TM 2012. I played the hell out of black. It just left me wanting to play TM2. The good things I can say about TM Black is the level design. Needs to be smaller but other than that the level design is as good as TM2.
At the end of the day, if you are me and you own TM2 and Vigilante 8, there is no need to own any other car combat games other than for collection purposes. No CC game I have played comes close to either of those 2 game's quality.

I just don't understand why you consider TM3 &4 to look better than TM2. When the new studio took over after 2, they changed the vibe so much. They made the levels look so plain and kinda abstract. The TM2 levels had so much more detail. They seemed grounded in some sort of reality. Like, I knew what I was looking at in TM2. 3 is not like that for me - it just seems like CGI poop. I suppose 4 makes more sense when looking at it, but the improvement is slight and the vibe is still way off. 4 definitely suffers from its roster too.

My biggest complaint with Twisted Metal black is that games are supposed to start easy and then get more difficult as you progress. In black the hardest level in the entire game is the first level. Everytime that I played Black legitimately I always game over on level one, but whenever ive skipped it I've been able to beat the other levels no problem.

So I'll be completely honest tm 1 is my absolute favorite too this day is it in need of a remaster? Oh definitely but I could never see myself dropping the O.G so low however 2 can stay right where it's at😂
