@@tomeraltman7491 Amen. As an American watching this, I can only lament its familiarity. Just substitute Republicans for Tories. My only hope is that November 4th is coming up quickly and I am praying fervently that the orange menace doesn’t steal this election, too. Several Congressional seats are up for grabs as well, and I am hoping and praying for a blue wave 🌊 to wipe out the current seat holders. If it doesn’t happen, I despair of anything ever getting better. I really don’t know if I can take another 4 years of this absolute dumpster fire.
I just feel so damn responsible for the rate of infectious as a young person, especially as a uni student. Not like I spent my student loan on meals because it was cheap and helped business! Also, THANK YOU for speaking on the free school meals vote! I’m a trainee teacher and worked with so many children who rely on that one hot meal a day. It pains me right now knowing they’re struggling because some ministers couldn’t care less. I used to have free school meals during secondary school when my dad lost his job, it made such a difference! That vote angers me beyond what words could express. My local MP, a Tory, saiid he had a rough week last week and loads of us were being like “what the fuck, at least you can eat. Enjoy your pay rise”. Can we create a petition to just make all the tortes who voted yes starve for a week and only have one hot meal?
@@KellyIsShort I'm originally from Plymouth and saw one of my Facebook friends share something about an MP going to his favourite chill out spot on the moors after "a tough old week" 😅
On behalf of young people: not only did they tell us that we should all go out and give us money off Nando’s, they then sent us all back to college, blamed us for rising cases, more people then loose their jobs and then they took away free food over the holidays when people need it most. Honestly, maybe we should eat the rich for dinner over the break instead. Edited for spelling
Honestly, I hate the phrase "eat the rich" because while I understand and somewhat agree with the sentiment, its over simplified and makes us sound like a cartoonvillain organisation, like a cartoon hydra from avengers. We need to expand and explain the sentiment of the phrase to the people in power rather than over simplifying it and making the rich look at us like we're children throwing a tantrum.
@@crystalkirlia4553 I get what you mean but the whole saying is something along the lines of “when the poor have no food left they’ll eat the rich” so a a situation like this where the government are taking free meals away from children who can’t afford it when there are even more people out of work than usual is the perfect situation for that phrase.
Honestly. The student union for the WHOLE country said "its a bad idea to have a mass exodus of students to different parts of the country", and the tories said "Nah, its fine". Then were surprised cases were rising? I cry.
Born in and living in Britain as well, The government is utterly incompetent right now, the Dominic Cummings case was handled horribly, the free school meal scheme being rejected as you mentioned has left me baffled, thankfully small businesses like my local football team are setting up schemes to do the best they can over the half term, despite a very limited budget due to covid-19, for example they’re partnering with a local restaurant for a two hour period where all under 16s eat free tomorrow. The department for education really has not dealt with the reopening of schools well, my school has had three cases and the one just down the road has had a rumoured (can’t confirm as I don’t go there) twenty cases. They are being told to stay open, despite half the school self isolating. Boris Johnson is incompetent, blaming everyone but himself, Manchester is in tier-3 now but the PM made it out to be the fault of the mayor refusing to cooperate... no idea why.
Although I love that small business and companies are helping out with the school meals and community spirit.... I feel like the government will say well as everyone else is helping out we don’t need to do anything
Because they're sick of labour lying to them, so they wanted someone else to lie to them instead. For real tho, they voted for change and got it, it just wasn't the change they wanted or needed. It was just a big disappointment.
As someone from the South I can't understand why anyone from the South would vote for the tories either. I also can't understand why my phone thinks South deserves a capital letter.
I love political Evan. Apolitical Evan is great too, but this sarcastic, pessimistic frustration really speaks to me. Perhaps only once in a while though. One can really wind themselves up in knots by thinking about the futility of politics all the time.
Lol, well being American and trying to neglect your American citizenship (because you're living in a different country) is like trying to permanently escape an abusive relationship
The government is not involved in the petition process (other than responding to them at 10,000 signatures) it is the Parliament petitions committee that considers the suitability of petitions NOT the government.
I may be overthinking things here, but I wonder if it's down to Evan's US background. In the US (as I understand it from my days doing comparative politics between the UK and the US in school) the concept of government is a much wider than what we would typically use in the UK. In the US the legislature, executive and judiciary are all the government whereas here in the UK we tend to use a much more restricted definition which essentially covers only the executive (i.e. Ministers and, where relevant in the context, their civil servants).
@@CD0010 But surely they are not so independent to not be held accountable by parliament. If parliament can’t be held responsible for committees that they created, then who can?
Exactly! I have to do 2 maths exams next week and I'm not even in school that week. I just have to go in at the time of the exam and we've missed so much school I just think it's crazy
An aspect of growing as a person is to develop qualities such as personal organisation and discipline, motivation adapting to change collaborating and networking with others. The government can't do that for you, this is something everybody has to do for themselves. Blaming the governmentis is just being passive and self disempowering.
I appreciate you calling out the free school meal issue. I am the office manager in a primary school that has a very small percentage of children eligible for free school meals. I see the benefit every single day that these free school meals gives to these children and I can’t begin to imagine how much it benefits children in more vulnerable areas and in schools with a higher pupil premium eligibility. How anyone can vote against this is unbelievably upsetting to me. Meanwhile these MPs are sitting with their expenses, meal allowances and huge pay packets. It’s just unbelievable. Some of these children have been at home for a full term before the summer and potentially living in vulnerable / dangerous situations without having the safety that school brings and the fact that these people vote against a small sign of support for these children is shocking. Thank you for raising awareness to one of the many failings of the Tory government!
Exactly! They put huge Covid restrictions even though they encouraged the spread of the coronavirus, especially as the “eat out to help out” scheme didn’t apply to takeaways so it encourages people to sit in and potentially spread the coronavirus. The “eat out to help out” scheme is also a scam. You actually pay for the full price of the meal. You pay half directly when the bill arrives and you pay the other half in taxes.
It’s the same government who won’t give nurses like myself a pay rise even though I’ve bn slogging my guts out during COVID, getting it myself, wittinessing people die cos of it. Everyone likes to think they're smart. The problem is that many people don't know what intelligence actually is in the first place. Being smart involves actually listening to reason and making logical conclusions even when you don't like the answers. Most people think "smart" just means "I make decisions that I like and find other people who say they like these decisions, too".
Great video. Agree with all points. I’m in the north voted non conservative, my conservative MP is a nob, grew up on free school meals voted against it and then claimed his constituents were spending the extra benefits provided on drugs, cigarettes and alcohol!
The voting system annoys me so much here as well. The only way you can make a difference is if you're in a constituency which is mostly divided, because people might change their votes. In my hometown people always vote Conservative regardless, so my non-conservative vote never mattered. Where I live now people always vote Labour - so yeah I'll vote Labour but I'm not taking away a Tory seat. I also wish people would stop assigning themselves a party that they stick to for life. My dad always votes Tory because that's what he's always voted, I doubt he even thinks about what the other parties have to say. I'm voting Labour this time around because I believe that they'll do a better job. If in future I believe they won't do a good job, i will vote for someone else. It is not that difficult. Edit: Seems so many people agree with my, I might start a petition to scrap FPTP voting that the tories will immediately reject
THANK YOU! omg I share your frustration about lifelong party voters who don't know anything about their party. I personally do a protest vote, never vote for one of the big 3 because in my opinion they're all as bad as each other, but I respect that you are voting for what YOU believe in and have researched rather than blindly voting the same as everyone around you.
YES! we have what is called a first past the post voting system, whoch means who ever gets the most votes gets the seat. this is so unrepesentative that sometimes I wonder how we're counted as a democratic country. It makes votes that are not voting with the majority in safe seat constituencies (constituencies that always vote the same way in elections- your hometown basically) meaningless, and those people go unrepresented. it also means that for a seat to be won, support has to be concentrated in a specific space and not spread across the country, which is just ridiculous. People these days are also so apathetic that they don't care what happens to their country and just vote the way they always have, meaning no change.
@COMRADE CAPSLOCK exactly, and there are so many better voting systems than FPTP. you would think that looking at representation statistics the government would see how disproportional support v seats truely is , and change the system. but no. they are incapable of doing something that might actually benefit the country.
You will often have a choice of three to five candidates. But you should vote for who you want to represent you OR the representitave of the party that you would most like to run the country
@COMRADE CAPSLOCK Nice in theory. Only one major problem. There isn't any party I have any faith in to do anything for this Country. When one starts existing I will quite happily vote for them.

I think it's that the title asks for one thing, but the subtitle asks for something else. You'll find that petitions have to be specific. (1) Hold a public inquiry into the enforcement of the Equality Act 2010 for financial institutions. Desc: There have been cases of financial institutions refusing to provide services for both British Citizens and British Residents who have U.S Nationality. This can prevent affected persons from even opening a checking account; something that most need to have in order to get paid and or pay for their basic needs. (2) Repeal the agreements made with the United States in relation to "the FATCA agreement". Desc: ... Oh, just had to keep watching (whoops). At 2:43, you'll notice that the Investigating suggestion and the Illegalizing suggestion are two different petition suggestions. Just petition one; they (Parliament) aren't restricted to "Yes/No"; they could decide to Investigate over Illegalize, even if the petition wants to illegalize.
This video is so good. It's as if someone has plucked the thoughts I have out of my brain and make a video about it. Thank you Evan for speaking about it.
I think it's more that the petition isn't specific enough. It's like giving someone a shopping list that says "food" rather than listing the actual things you want them to buy.

I implore the world to start fighting for your own self interests, please. OK apparently I had a lot more to say than i thought.
As a recent graduate from newcastle, where one of the unis had 770 positive cases in a single day, I think government are right when they blame young people. It's not us young people who went out, ate in restaurants, followed the rules. It's the students having illegal raves and giant house parties, blatantly disregarding the rules.
Not really, there are a few students disregarding the rules but it's more that a large number of people have moved into accommodation and that uni as a whole makes it difficult to social distance and isolate. It only takes one person and suddenly everyone on that course and all their flatmates are at risk.
@@coz1866 the fact that young people usually have less symptoms and might not even know they are ill till the entire school is down, doesnt help either. And its less easy to quarantine, cause most of your friends live on the same campus, so who will get you food if you all have to stay inside?

I'm not British, so I actually don't know if this would be possible, but maybe you could write to the MP of the constituency you live in, or even an MP from anywhere else. Idk, maybe one of the Greens or a Welsh/Scottish/Northern Irish party? I guess you already considered that option and it was not worth it anyway - I completely get it 😓.
Generally MPs can only respond to people who live in their constituency but still worth contacting his MP to see if there's anything that could be done?

Yes, you can contact your local MP. However, the chances are high that if you're lucky enough to get a stock response it will simply say 'I'm not able to put this forward because that's not how government works'.
You can write to MP's but it will make no difference in the whole scheme of things. Either you are writing to an opposition MP who is powerless to do anything about it or you are writing to a Tory who is too busy sucking up to Boris and his cronies.

I dont think people understand how annoying it is as a young person, to be able to see the problems right in front of you and come up with solutions that are ignored by the people who have power and who haven't even identified the problems as problems yet. I mean I knew the consequences of brexit when i was in yr6 and the morons who voted leave didn't. I can tell you everything wrong with the conservatives and why the government has failed us all, and I haven't even done my GCSEs yet. that should show you something about the people who are voting in the country as well as our government's stupidity. and i'm also happy that you talked about how these people were VOTED into power, especially in light of the US elections coming up. To the few americans who may see this, go vote early/register to vote and change your country before it gets any worse. the youth turnout this year has been mind blowing so maybe america can save itself. the uk right now is a sinking ship and I hope that when the next election does come around that our youth might be able to save it as well.

On behalf of young people: not only did they tell us that we should all go out and give us money off Nando’s, they then sent us all back to college, blamed us for rising cases, more people then loose their jobs and then they took away free food over the holidays when people need it most. Honestly, maybe we should eat the rich for dinner over the break instead.
Edited for spelling
So true, honestly.
I cry.
Make sure to cut the fat before cooking, many of us have cholesterol issues.
My school near Glasgow has at least 10 cases (I am not sure about any in younger years) and we're still open.... frankly it's scary.
Although I love that small business and companies are helping out with the school meals and community spirit.... I feel like the government will say well as everyone else is helping out we don’t need to do anything

The government is not involved in the petition process (other than responding to them at 10,000 signatures) it is the Parliament petitions committee that considers the suitability of petitions NOT the government.
But who established and endorsed said committee? 🤔

‘Eat out to help out’ help out what, covid? Our government is riddled with incompetence and selfishness, it’s exasperating

This is maybe my favourite video of yours. I love the outright anger at politicians and I am here for it
The voting system annoys me so much here as well.
@COMRADE CAPSLOCK Nice in theory.
Only one major problem.
There isn't any party I have any faith in to do anything for this Country.
When one starts existing I will quite happily vote for them.
