Avatar the Last Airbender Cactus Juice | How to Drink

- Cactus Juice, It'll quench ya! Today I make Cactus Juice from Avatar the Last Airbender, the stuff that Sokka drank in the desert. Real Cactus Juice! It's the Quenchiest!
Avatar the Last Airbender is hugely popular despite being off the air for a long time, and it's just recently been released on Netflix so it was time to do Avatar. Here's a fun thing- I actually never got into this show despite people yelling at me for years to get into it- and I've finally watched it and ya know what- it's good! You knew that obviously, but now I know it too, so, you all win. I'm pretty into this show, Uncle Iroh at least... I could do with a lot less Sokka. But hey, this show is all about Sokka, so let's do it!
I cover it pretty heavily on camera but my goal here was to actually use cactus juice to do it and not just dance around that ingredient and it wasn't super easy to work with. One- most cactuses are pretty poisonous, actually just like on Avatar, and two- doesn't taste great.
Nopales is a type of cactus that does show up in cooking a bit though, and it's safe to ingest, so, I've more or less got to go with that. I played around with the ingredient a bit and the best solution I found to get it into a drink was to make a Nopales Syrup to do it and that worked pretty damn well. Very well in fact, so here's that recipe:
Nopale Syrup
• 2 Nopales paddles, roughly chopped
• 400 grams white sugar
• 400 ml. water
• combine in saucepan, boil till sugar dissolves
• continue to simmer for about 10 minutes, the syrup should take on the color of the nopales
• remove from heat, cool, strain, bottle.
With a syrup like that we have a few options, first for a non-alcoholic version I like to put it together with some club soda and bitters.
Cactus Juice
• 1 part Nopales Syrup
• 3 parts club soda
• Bitters of your choice
• get quenched
And for the grown up version, I came up with something I call Sokka's Quencher
Sokka's Quencher
• 1 oz. or 30 ml. Nopales Syrup
• .5 oz. or 15ml. pineapple juice
• 2 oz. or 60 ml. tequila
• shake & strain
• garnish with candied orange wheel
Slowly but surely, I'm starting a mailing list so that I'm not fully dependent on YT's algorithmized notifications system. If you'll sign up, I promise not to abuse your generosity, or sell your info to anyone. It's over on the blog right here:

Sokka in the first season was annoying as hell, but season 2 and onwards he really grew on me, and developed as a character. He’s a competent leader, a clever trickster, a strategical genius, and he’s really likable.
The farther you get into the show the more these aspects star to stand out. By time the end of the series he comes around to be a well rounded character while still keeping to his original character.
I would, however, say that he's still annoying. It just becomes part of his charm. It never actually goes away.

1:49 She didn't learn the technique of taking water from plants until book 3 on the puppetmaster episode.
An answer!
I think that would still pull whatever impurities are in the water itself with it/plant fibers or cells that got damaged as the water was pulled out of them like osmosis
@@silasstryder I would really like to know the in universe science behind all the bendings work like how come metal with small levels of impurity can be bent and what level does it become unbendable same for water/mud/plants ect for water benders and can air benders bend fire by using the air around it can fire benders bend burning coals since they are burning I need answers
@@andrewwashington3186 The cool thing about this universe is the writers have characters in universe contemplate this and come up with new forms of bending or techniques like blood bending for water benders or lighting bending for fire benders. Though lightning bending may not have a reasonable scientific explanation like metal bending and blood bending, the latter literally just being bending in an area benders don't normally. So extrapolating with that reasoning could actually give insight into what the future holds for the series in terms of new powers or uses for bending. Legend of Korra making this quite obvious as they move towards the mass industrialization of the powers.
My guess in regards to metal bending is that it's an exponentially harder task to bend more and more pure metals. So a modern made metal with 99.9% purity would be impossible for anyone, but the avatar. Either that or they could find a loophole like sandblasting the metal to reduce the purity. Either with a very hard technique or if the technology has advanced enough, just a portable sand blaster which any metal bending novice could use.
@@andrewwashington3186 If I had to guess what type of higher level bending, in theory that can ommit chemicals, it would be either earth or water bending. Just think of the element chart. Its mostly made up of metals and gas.
In the same episode, Katara used of the last of her bending water and Soka mentions it tasting swampy and that she used it on the swamp monsters. It would have been great if Katara could have filter bended that water.
It would seem possible to maybe bend down to the chemical level given that there is Energy bending (as Aang did in the last episode, after learning the technique from the sea lion turtle). Combine that with the Avatar state drawing energy from the universe. So maybe the Avatar can only do it.
As far as fire benders using hot coals, that scenario would only happen in the universe of a movie that shall not be named. In that universe they had to have actual flames to fire bend. In the tv series fire benders draw their energy from the sun and not anything on earth.

You’ve mentioned doing a whole episode on tea before, NOW IS YOUR CHANCE!
Nopal cactus is something I love when put into the right dish. Oddly enough, one of the best is also the simplest: Just cube it and fry it with onions and scrambled eggs with a hint of salt and garlic, maybe sprinkle a small amount of strong cheese at the end (if you have cotija...use that, but otherwise a light shake from your standard cheap "parmesean" powder will do) and you're good to go. Otherwise, it is a really solid ingredient in fish soups and stews, especially tomato-based ones. It also plays very nicely with okra as it actually has some flavor notes in common, just as it does with green bell pepper (but more complex and a hint of sourness). Another really good use for it is in vegetable stews (vegans, listen up), especially ones with hominy...I made a vegetable stew as a side dish to go with chicken legs that consisted of nopales, golden hominy, white onion, finely diced carrots, sliced roma tomatoes, fresh cilantro, a small amount of rice (just enough to have a few grains per spoonful...it's not actually a "rice dish"), and seasoned it with garlic, chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt, pepper, and a tiny hint of thyme (really small...you don't want to overdo thyme). I started by caramelizing the onions and nopales in a bit of vegetable oil, then added all of the other stuff along with some water and just let it all cook for about 2 hours.
theres a scene in Ratatouille the movie where the rat literally drinks a grape. i watched that scene when i was little and found it so satisfying. bet you cant do that >:)

We actually make "jugo verde" using pineapple, nopal, orange and sometimes celery.
The way I eat nopales, is charbroiled them and seasoned with oregano, best if it is in a taco with carne asada.
"...you're better off drinking your own sweat and urine. "
Oh hey, an idea for a Dune Episode
bear grills (grylls?) would love this idea
Gotta make his own still suit.
"That Uncle Iroh is in fact, pretty cool." Wooooooo boy, wait until you hear about Mako and Leaves From the Vine
Like the song at the end of the episode he showed a clip from? If he got that clip he probably finished the episode
Gonna get dusty.
Leaves From the Vine is so sad!
That quote has caught my attention already lol (to the t my dude, nice 👍)
I love your show - particularly your unique approach, in creating drinks from popular media. You're a fantastic content creator, and you've earned a subscriber in me at least three times over.
But the way you say "vegetal" instead of "vegetable" absolutely drives me up the wall.
They’re different words man!
-_-
I apologise - I just googled "vegetal"
I suppose with how widespread "vegital" became I assumed this was a meme escaping out into the outside world. I'm glad I was wrong, really.
I guess I'm learning more from this channel than just How to Drink! 😁
Who the hell is Toeph? She looks a lot like Toph!
Secret sister
Secret twin
Tophs secret sister from the secret tunnel
He also called Appa a flying buffalo.
It's the big guy from the play.
Oh man! This gets an automatic like from me cause Sokka's cactus drink is the quenchiest!
Huge fan by the way
