We are the same here in Tulsa Oklahoma. Yet the rain is forecasted all week. I'm worried about swarms as well, because they are reports around here of early swarms. Days above average temps and then below, just the other day 80 and the next morning 27. Trying to figure when to make queens. Seen too many of what I thought to be early Springs and then 3 weeks of below normal temps. So,I put my muck boots on and I put a clean bottom board and another box each bottom and put them on the new box. This way if they push the brood down they have space and comb to draw. First time I've under boxed.
I am a little envious of you! The spring here shows from the right side, being a real spring. Daytime 5-10 degree celcious (40-50 f) nighttime negative 5-10 c (negative 23-14 f). I have just been able to check my bottomboards this weekend. But hopefully in a few weeks the warmth might come back to my part of Sweden. Then the ground will be all White with Lilies of the vally, some hepatica, coltsfoot, cowslip, hazel, sallow and so forth. Looking so much forward to that! Lot's of love from Sweden!
In Charlotte, NC swarm season began 4 weeks ago. 1st year bee keeper, I had 4 colonies busting at the seams, to date they have swarmed 8 times! I was able to catch all 8 swarms. Now I have 12 hives. 2 more hives might swarm again. Yes I put supers on them 3 weeks ago but that didn't seem to help.
I know you and Laurel are busy but I would love to see that video about moving hives. I have not done much of it but will be doing quite a bit shortly and always have a bit of trepidation, I am concerned about leaving bees behind. Thanks for the excellent content!
Hey thanks! So now I am wondering about the hold time? It would seem to me if you take them more than 2 miles away there would be no reason to hold them in except perhaps may be for 20-30 minutes to let them settle down?
I've watched all of your videos and I'm sure you covered it already, and I missed it, but, when is the best time to do splits. I'm not looking for a specific calendar date, as everyone's growing calendar is different. Looking good, what's your spring mite plan? I need to oa then add Apivar right after I think and knock em down from beginning, I keep having problems before honey pulled and can't treat, can't pull honey.. I gotta be more aggressive this Spring
I had a swarm last week, 3/19/20. I didn't catch it. Someone else did. I had put a second box on in February and they didn't appear overcrowded. They had plenty of food. Now the problem is, even though they are trying to make a new queen, it might be too early for her mate. Now the capped brood has pretty much all hatched. I think the problem was that there wasn't drawn comb in the 2nd box. It is going to be hard for this hive to survive.
Hey Kamon, In one of your videos you used a 2 gallon bucket syrup feeder with a hive body to conceal it. How has that worked for you? I noticed that the inside feeder you are using in this video takes up a lot of valuable space that could give you one or two more frames of bee production. Is that what you are planning in the future? Presently I am using a 4 quart jar feeder, Dadant's new catalog page 64 part no. M00825 - $7.40. They meet my need for what I am doing. I was thinking about going to the 2 gallon pail but wondered if you could get enough holes in the lid to satisfy their need as opposed to having 4 jars available. Your thoughts?
The buckets worked great. I am thinking about using a betterbee screen insert like Ian stepplar uses to increase consumption. Also the inserts can be pulled out so that the lids don't have to be removed and they can be filled easily
3 packed hives in DE - I removed all capped swarms cells and any cups I could find yesterday. There was brood, drones and even nectar & pollen in all of them. I have to recheck one next week to go over all the frames again. Oh and I took off my mouse guards and opened the reducers some more. I'm wondering if it was my hives you saw on facebook ! LOL
Temps and since it is all drawn and they are trying to build cells I have time. If this was foundation I would have brought a frame of larvae up for sure

Dear sir, kindly let me know that do you have any good idea to make a natural swarm from a colony , as my two strong colony have not made any Swarm for last three years. As i want to make more bees colony . Please suggest some good tips.
I'm new to the bee keeping, and when I say I mean this is my first year. I've not been able to put out a swarm box because of all the rain. Until last week, but its been raining so much since I put it out. I live in Mo. and I'm not sure when bees swarm here but do bees still swarm in rain? We've had a few days of warm weather but just a lot of rain.
@@DStewart2022 Ok thank you for getting back to me so quick. I believe its calling for rain here almost all week. I'm just so impatient and want to get things going, if you know what I mean?
Yes, I totally understand the impatient part of it. I really need to be working the bees and with the poor weather we've had, I have no choice but to "bunker up" and do what needs doing. Hang in there, swarm season is just around the corner. Best wishes for a great season!!
This is not what I want to hear! Here I am, waiting until the rain stops, thinking I'm being smart. Guess I better get on it while the rain has let up.
The earlier the bees swarm, the better. A swarm in March is worth the Marble Arch. A swarm in April is worth a golden table. A swarm in May is worth a load of hay. A swarm in June is worth a silver spoon. A swarm in July is only worth a fly. A swarm in August is worth a speck of dust. A swarm in September no-one can remember.
Because it is better for them and us. 7 out of 10 swarms die in their first 365 days. I lose about 1 out of 10. I give them a better cavity. When they need space I give it, when it is better for them to have less I remove it. When nature is cruel and supplies no food I give it. If they requeen and the virgin on her mating flight is eaten by a bird or dragonfly I give them a new one. Nature is cruel and doesn't care. I do

I know someone else asked, but were those queen cups on a couple of those frames?
Queen cups on a few but nothing being turned into a queen cells ......yet
I HAVE A BEEHIVE BROOD BOX .SHOULD I DO THE SAME HAS YOU DID ,THEN PUT ON A SUPER ?.I LIVE IN THE UK .
Would you treat now? OAV or Apivar?
I knocked them back good in winter BUT if I felt like they needed it OAV would be good right now.
It would take several rounds to take effect though
Kamon Reynolds - Tennessee's Bees I treated last in November...
Do you use pressure treated wood for your bottom boards/pallets?
Running Dog Apiary I would. Everything else would just rot quick
Dear sir, kindly let me know that do you have any good idea to make a natural swarm from a colony , as my two strong colony have not made any Swarm for last three years. As i want to make more bees colony . Please suggest some good tips.
Your grass is almost as long as my snow is deep. It should be going away soon might get up to 50 degrees in a couple of weeks
Hey Brother so interesting would love to be helping from Pa
Were those queen/swarm cells on 2 of those frames?
they were queen cups that could be used to make queen cells in! They were not being used
When moving hives do you close them up one evening and open them the next evening after in new location? Or do you do a forced re-orientation?
"I just can't help it"..you are a bee addict, lol. Enjoy your videos!
I've only got top bar hives so unfortunately I only get extra combs from dead outs....
Texas is tried of rain too
I'm new to the bee keeping, and when I say I mean this is my first year. I've not been able to put out a swarm box because of all the rain. Until last week, but its been raining so much since I put it out. I live in Mo. and I'm not sure when bees swarm here but do bees still swarm in rain? We've had a few days of warm weather but just a lot of rain.
My experience (FWIW) is that the first sunny day after a cloudy/rainy period of a few days is prime time for swarming.
@@DStewart2022 thank you
@@DStewart2022 Yes, Big Bees cooped up often swarm on a nice sunny day after some rainy ones
Bula Kamon, what are the possibility of swarm with your super half full in your experience. Btw love your videos.
Wow you are brave. How often do you get stung?
30-50 times a year id say
i once took a swarm off a fruit tree during a snow mixed with rain day up in jersey
Wow!
This is not what I want to hear! Here I am, waiting until the rain stops, thinking I'm being smart. Guess I better get on it while the rain has let up.
Kamon, you gotta make a shirt that says "BEE POWER"
Getting into mine today as well..video coming up later today or tomorrow.
How do you know when a swarm gets ready to prepare to swarm.
great info
So when you move your hives you said it's not fancy! You mean you don't have a Ian Steppler set up?
Haha you guessed it!
Kamon Reynolds - Tennessee's Bees he definitely has a cool set up.
Great
Why did you do 9 frames in the top and 10 in the bottom?
8 frames in the bottom with feeder. But if the feeder was not in we would have 9 over 9
The earlier the bees swarm, the better.
Why do you only use 9 frames in your boxes?
Good vid
Queen Cell!
I need a good way to build up honey bees?can you help me on this GOD BLESS thank you for your video
This hive so good it’s against the law😂 love it
Why do you use frame feeders a video would be helpful
Why would you stop and insect or animal from doing what comes naturally in nature, it harms the bees and there life cycle
I do
- Why do you not checker-board the brood boxes when adding a new brood box?
What is your reasoning?
- Why do you only use 9 Frames in a brood box, instead of 10?
It’s not like a honey super where the bees can fill more of a fatter cell with Honey.
- As always, i enjoy & learn so much from your videos.
I also enjoy your wife, she adds alot, with her little giggle now & then, please tell her she does an excellent job with the camera.
When you say “oh there’s the Queen”, she immediately zooms in or gets closer.
I’ve noticed she does this quite a bit with other things you point out or talk about too.
She seems like a keeper.
How did you luck out?
