    Fun fact: despite being the Dutch anthem, it never mentions the Dutch once.

      The anthem is both a personal reflection of William's (Father of the Fatherland) experiences and a broader call for Dutch citizens to embody the virtues he represented. It encourages the Dutch to emulate his sense of duty, courage, and determination in the face of adversity.

      @@alain6950 I know. But he says he’s of German blood. I love the anthem and message nonetheless.

      ​@Swissswoosher that's not really true. It says "Duitsen bloed", in the 16th and 17th "Duitsch" meant Dutch, not German. That's because back then, the Netherlands was not a united country like it is now.

      @@skylixx005 Germany was not a united country but even back then people called themselves German. The heir to the HRE held the title „King of Germany“. In German the HRE is even called „Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation“. So while the country did not exist, the idea of being German did.
