Despite being English, as far as I am concerned "Het Wilhelmus" is the most beautiful national anthem in the whole world. A truly wonderful hymn that always brings tears to my eyes when I hear it played.
The first couplet of the Wilhelmus song contains the craziest lines of any anthem anywhere. "I have always honored the King of Spain." At the time of its writing the King of Spain was the arch-enemy of The Netherlands. And today, I doubt anyone knows who the king of Spain is today, he certainly has no connection to the Netherlands.
Unlike many Anthems, the Wilhelmus is actually a story of the beginning of the 80 years war (Dutch Independence War) following the exploits of William of Orange the de-facto leader of the rebellion. Back then songs were mostly used to relay meaning and as such William ordered the writing of the song and its "Distribution" to the peoples living in the Netherlands in order to rally them to his cause and banners. The reason why it states that he has always honoured the King of Spain is simply to look like he is not an aggressor, but is righteously forced to take up arms to save the Dutch People from the religious and tax tyranny of the Spanish. I recommend reading the translation of the full song somewhere :)
@@stijnvanbezouwen6443 Indeed. He's basically stating he was forced to rebel but did not commit treason as such, like he would when he would trying to take the throne, which he didn't. Besides fighting, he as always kept making the legal case that justified his actions. He claimed the legal right to rebel and claimed the king of Spain was out of order.
I wonder if Willem-Alexander gives Felipe VI a call every Christmas, just to check in and "follow the family tradition."
Respect and honor between two enemies was and still is normal.
Just because they were biggest enemies doesn’t mean you can’t have respect. And wasn’t William of Orange allied with Spain to begin with but broke this alliance on behalf of the Dutch people suffering because of him?
Simply read the last stanza!
Before God, and his great powers, I will testify
That I never looked down on the King
But that I had to obey God, the highest Majesty
In rightful justice
The anthem has little to do with the House of Orange Nassau but only with Willem, who as a former steward to the king of Spain led the rebellion against that king. His family had little to do with that. He first was the king's steward (stadhouder) and later became the States' (the Dutch parliament of that time) steward as the king was declared to have left the throne by becoming a tyrant.
His mother, Juliana van Stolberg, had quite a bit to do with it, surely, by personally encouraging two of her Nassouwe sons to fight for protestantism by supporting the Geuzers and their struggle against the Spanish King and his Catholic Inquisition. She backed this up with huge family financial resources. Her son, Jan de Rijke, wasn't called that for nothing 😀.
In that sense, his family had a great deal to do with it. Willem de Zwijger couldn't have done it without them.
But yes, they had little to do with Orange, but that because it was only Willem who personally inherited that Princedom from a French cousin, Chalon. That would affect only offspring of Willem and their descendants.
You come back!! Great!👍
Probs to the man who single handedly made a Time Machine and recorded Dutch republic anthem

Ok so? Like who cares.
Fun fact: the Dutch national anthem was adopted from a letter written by William the Silent (the first leader of the Netherlands)
William the silent? Never heard of him before
@@magical5181 it’s probably because you weren’t taught about him
@@Truerussiantigershark No no, its a little mistake by me haha. I know William of orange, but by that name. I didnt know they call gim William the silent too.
Not really. The writer of the lyrics is unknown. Some say it was Philips van St Marnix van St Aldegonde (a close friend of William of Orange), but later computer AI came with another name Petrus Dathenus. So, yeah, we'll never know.

Wiem Nederlands Bloed and Nederlans sounds like the Cornish natiomal anthem
As far as I know the music of the Dutch anthem used to be a well-known pub song, only sung much faster which made it more gay. It is a wise decision to use a melody that 'everybody' of the common people already knows, when you need to stir up support among the population.
Hübsch, die Wilhelmushymne…..!

As unofficial anthem of Reichskommisariat Niederlande aka Nazi-Netherlands could be considered Waar de Blanke Top Der Duinen or Romdiredom
