I mer Al on a flight from LA he was headed to Canada for a concert. He allowed me to take a picture with him i will cherish it forever. Al gone too soon! Peace! I love this song!❤
My mother played this song so much when I was a child. I heard it the other day and almost busted out in happy tears. So many memories come with song. It is a classic!
He was one of my favorite singers of all time. Saw him live twice in New York when this album was out. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife. The energy was so electric. It was surreal. what an honor to witness him twice in his prime. And I stared my first "man child" in the eye, has got to be one of the most deepest lines in any song he ever recorded...
this performance is historical, pure moment of truth and happiness where gifted and blessed Al Jarreau spreads love and peace of mind from the deepest part of his soul... this medicinal video makes our world a better place. thank you Al Jarreau and Oan01 for having posted it.
This is one of the most powerful performances that I have ever watched. Piano, drums and a bass. Simple and pure. This video put the spotlight on Al Jarreau's truly unique talent for creating joy.
Agreed. I’m in my 50’s now. I think I was 15 or 16 when I viewed this episode for the first time and I felt like I was witnessing a miracle. I dare say that his successful performance was a great help to the over all success to SNL. I saw him in concert when I was 27 at the Greek. He did not do disappoint. R.I.P. I miss you brother. 😢
I was a freshman in college when I first saw Al on SNL and it blew me away. Still brings a smile to my face! "Thank you 'Retha, thank you Sly, you helped me get by!"
That was FREAKING BEAUTIFUL!!!! Thank Mr. Jarreau! Thank you for being on earth to share with us your beautiful God gifted voice! And thank you oan01 for posting this soul stirring music which was chicken soup for the soul! Thanks!!!
My sentiments exactly! I feel blessed when I listen to "We Got By". This is why I like reading the comments, to get confirmation that there are other people feeling the same way.
I love it! At 5:23 Al says "thank you 'retha (Aretha Franklin) thank you Sly (Sly Stone) you also helped me to get by." I so love Al's passion and free expression.
my deceased sister introduced me to this music when this album came out in 1976.norman Connors/the isley brothers were on my hit list.everything I hear this album I remember her.rest your soul, Latonia a.johnson.never forgotten..
🥰 Feeling so much listening to Jarreau’s heart and the great artistry of the musicians bringing it with him. My beautiful loving mother raised four children alone. We got by on Chicago’s south side.
I really can't remember the first time I heard Al but I know it was after this song. But once I heard this one I knew I would love him and his music forever.
I remember the SNL performance of We Got By. He sang it into a commercial break at the end of the song and when they came back live after the commercial, he was still singing the end of the song. Went on and on and everyone was spellbound. It's when I fell in love with Al Jarreau!
Thats where I first heard it. But it was in the 80s when they were syndicating the reruns of the original 'not ready for primetime' cast years. Such a soulful performance. Its one of the songs that always makes me tear up.🎶 😑

Woke up this morning with this song running around in my head. Helped me to get out of bed, being reminded that we're all dealing with stuff and doing our best to get through it. P.S. Thanks to the uploader for this amazing performance. I came to RUclips tonight looking for the audio and found THIS!
When I saw Al Jarreau perform years ago when I was college, that was an experience because of his style of singing and all of the special effects and sounds he would perform as he sung.
Saw this on TV freshman year of college, back when you didn't even go out until after SNL went off. This was my introduction to Al.This is one of those albums that seemingly EVERYBODY had. I still love this dude.
Oh my goodness truly missed Al jarreau was something else my favorite vocalists I hear this song in my car everyday when I hear it it just brings a tear to my eyes to see this live it's something else you're truly missed 👁️ ILOVEIT 😉👌🏾💞💞💞
I was 12 years old when my older sister watched this on SNL I was hooked like a fish. I meet Mr Jarreau at Capital Jazz fest Baltimore Md. 2009 during a Q&A what a beautiful soul.......
The emotion in this song is palpable. It pulls on my heart strings, makes me happy. I was listening to his works from way back. RIP Al. You were wonderful to listen to.
oan01: thank you for posting this gem! Takes me back to ‘78 when Al’s double live album came out and I was living back in Honolulu. This tune was one of my faves from that wonderful set.
Interpretation - presentation of anything he sang was different showed his imagination! A step outside the circle - Gone too soon but glad he was was here!!
Love his voice. I love his side of blues and jazz togetherness like no other. Al will beTruly missed. I love the world please. Its our only future. Peace and happiness❤
Now bye and bye, I am back home in the 3rd Grade, 1963 at the dinner table of commodities, powdered milk, powdered eggs, dried navy beans, and spam. " Momma this milk taste...., I said. " Boy stop, this is all we have to eat. One day you will be grown. Make sure your children have what they need to eat," then and now her words make me tremble. Thank you momma for the bye and bye!
Happy Birthday Al! I don't know why but this is my favorite of all your songs. I like everything about it. You are so very missed, but thank you for the music you left behind.
I was stationed at the US Naval yard Philadelphia while in the USMC saw him at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia WOW WOW this a Christmas song to me it reminds me of soooo much stuff and he introduced Angelo Bofill who's music l love also
first heard this when my bro brought it home on break from Berklee, double album set, recorded live in Germany. Wow! blew my mind, changed my mind, made up my mind about possibilities. went out and preached this stuff on the boom box. it was a great era when guys would no sooner finish digesting a spat of outlaws, "green grass 'n high tides forever" then they'd be serving up a course of Al's "we got by" or "you don't see me". oft miss the old party days and wide open music flavored ways.
A friend gave me the album on cassette (it apparently wasn't at *all* what he expected when he bought it). It floored me then, and it still does. Jarreau's way of blending straight vocals, vocalese & scat, his ability to phrase like a front line soloist, his astonishing range of timbres and musical ideas, plus the unusually hip settings for a singer, were like nothing I'd heard before. Finally being able to watch these performances adds yet another dimension, an emotional depth of field. And this version of We Got By, in particular, is just breathtaking in that regard. It's a compelling musical, and social, and personal/emotional history all wrapped up in one hard-won, but ultimately triumphant package. Wow.
One of the greatest live performances of all time ❤
I mer Al on a flight from LA he was headed to Canada for a concert. He allowed me to take a picture with him i will cherish it forever. Al gone too soon! Peace! I love this song!❤

This is still one of my favorites after all these years.

What a beautiful song of inner peace
This is the late Al Jarreau at this fines such a beautiful song of survival the hard times of life, the mention of his mother poetic justice.
His sincerity is so palpable...being poor but not knowing it because love filled the gaps..
Yes!!! I could not have thought of such poignant words myself!

modernsunrecords He sung soo naturally and didn't force it. He had soo much fun improvising and making a song a hit all over again!!
I couldn't agree more. I've played this so many times and each time it eases my contact with the rest of life.
Absolutely ♥️🎼🙏🏽

I was buying Earth, Wind and Fire, Rufus and Chaka Khan. But I need some Al Jarreau, too.
