Banana Hobbies 12 CH AeroFoam Blue Arctic Camo L-39 Albatros 105mm WILL IT BURN?

  • Hey folks.
    I decided to get a Banana Hobbies Aerofoam L-39. When I first shared with the world I was getting this, I received a lot of feedback that this plane had problems and would most likely catch on fire. I share my thoughts on the assembly and early flight testing in this video. So far, I have nine flights and zero fires. Actually, I love this plane. I thought a few things sucked in the manual and layout, but I still give it a 95% thumbs up.

    I have the MB339 version. The Aerofoam and the PPAS come out of the same factory, in fact I believe PPAS is the manufacturer for Aerofoam. They are identical except the PPAS comes with the HSD S fan unit and the Hobbywing 160 esc, plus they have the JP Hobby retracts. Additionally the PPAS has a steel plate on the fuse side where the nose and main fuselage join together. I tried to drill through it to tidy up the rats nest of wires and quickly discovered the foam was in fact foam, ply and steel. So very solid.
    The MB339 flies like a dream and is fast and sounds great, has zero bad habits and lands really predictably and easily. It's quality is as good as my HSD L39 turbine. Hopefully they will keep new models coming and continue to improve the components as needed, as they appear to have done over the last two years.

    Nice video, I was the guy you mentioned:). You are definitely on point with the review. I ended up softly pancaking mine into the south bean field on approach on a weird comm issue and an odd LVC on new packs?? It's repairable with minimal damage but decided after all the problems to scrap it and start over with a new kit.

      I have 11 flights now. It still flies a bit wonky, but lower throws and some expo on the elevator really did help.

      @@dagtheaviator I had went well below the recommended throws and lower expo's. In my case the jet didn't respond well to anything above 25-30% on expo. I also lowered the servo speed. It responded very well to the lower expo and slower servo speed and after 20-30 flights was close to 100% dialed in. I fly almost all big edf's with no troubles, but this one was just wonky and had a mind of its own! I'll get the new one rebuilt soon, I'll have to tell ya at some the control surface differences I discovered when comparing both of these kits, it could've been the culprit to most of the issues.

    It’s not the newer version that burst into flames they revamped it and changed the esc to a flywing and a jp fan it’s the older version with the vgood esc and old fan that burns up into flames

    Hi Damon, in my experience L39s have very sensitive elevators (and to a lesser extent ailerons). When we were selling the SAPAC 70mm fiberglass L39 our recommended throws were 5mm for high rate and 3mm for low rate. Because of this elevator sensitivity any play in the system will make them feel "off". With the proper CG you should be able to mechanically reduce the throws which will make it more predictable, reduce the free play in the system which will make it less wonky (yes, that's the technical term) and also reduce the probability of a high speed stall when pulling too much elevator in a turn.

    3rd flight esc burst into flames like mentioned and went in like a blaze of glory! Banana hobby didn’t cover it , hobby wing didn’t cover it. Talked extensively with tech from hobbywing, the flyfun 130-160 are a low pole count esc made for planes and quads not large outrunner and certainly not the jp fan and its original motor they blow up all the time he told me! Sent me the platinum 130 ran like a dream sent the esc back to him and now I only run platinum escs, and or innovative designs opto 160 from badass motors.

      Working on my mb339 now with the jp fan. I did have an L-39 with the changesun and vgood esc catch fire in the air on the second flight. I will cut the wires down.
      Also the manual also warned me to check the pin location on the BEC. It was set to 7.4v on both sides which would have fried all my servos.

    Here’s the thing… you have the new version. They used to come with change sun fan units and vgood 160amp esc. These planes are top of the line now that they have taken and put the best available power system on the market in them. Banana hobby has really stepped up their game. These things will be flying off the shelves once people realize. I have 3 of these airframes and they really are solid great planes with a little bit of organizing and customizing which I enjoy doing as do you: great job buddy! Ps these now come stock with JO 105mm edf and hobby wing flyfun 160 amp esc: upgraded servos arms and electronics they fixed all the issues not to mention your getting jp retracts and brakes. You just can’t trash these planes any more they are high quality now.

      Hey Dag, so I’m setting up mine now and I’m ready to work on my power system. Can you tell me where you found it says not to exceed 150mm on the power wire to the esc? I’m not doubting you one but I am just reading the manual and can’t seem to locate that in the hobby wing manual. Thanks .

      @@nicholasflyboymiller68 when I looked up the ESC on the manufacturers website, there was a place that showed wire length. So it’s not on the banana hobbies website, it’s on the manufacture of the ESC website.

    Shame it co es whacked from China ‼️ It is a beautiful jet indeed and knowing all just mentioned here I’d still 💯 % purchase it ‼️A lil pricy alone then the twin 6 S LIPOS. I’d probably never fly it for the fact of tearing up such a beauty !

    Are you still flying the same set up with no issues? I’m getting ready to start my build of the Air Force scheme so if you have had no issues I will follow the same set up. Thank you great work great craftsmanship!

    I have the exact same flying issues as you. The stock esc is the v-good and those are the ones that had some of the burn out issues. I have put a gps on the mb339 and L39 and reached top speed of 105mph. Bigger planes always look slower than they are.

    Ive been flying the Aerofoam MB-339 for the last year, its the same electronics as the L-39 and i havent had any issues with the ESC bursting into flames either

    How many amps is your system pulling. Mine with the JP Hobby setup on the v2 PNP only pulls 99-103 amps when it should be closer to 130 amps. Not sure if changing to a JP 150amp esc over the Hobbywing Flyfun ESC will make a difference.

    I have the same one and reduced my leads. How many amps are you pulling. Mine only pulls 100 amps no matter what esc timing I’m using.

    you could try 4 deg up trim on the ailerons it made a big difference on one of mine all though mine was not edf
