I would love to see clutch pencils become more popular. I discovered clutch pencils over a decade ago and they quickly became my favorite writing instruments.
I only learned recently about clutch pencils when I got one in an art supply subscription box. They quickly became my favorite. They're so much easier to keep sharp than regular pencils, so I have a few with different types of leads. It makes drawing so much more relaxing for me. My first clutch pencil was one of the big ones with extremely thick lead but the others are the thinner ones.
Wow!!! That was helpful and informative!!! I just ordered my clutch pencils and didn’t know the difference of all the numbers. Now I know that I get 6 minis tomorrow 😊. That is perfect for me! Thank you very very much!!!
I picked up a 5608 at New York Comic Con of all places last year and I love it. What drew me to it was the build quality, the size and the cool 50's lettering on the side. I also have the Toison D'Or 5900 but it's not as portable as the 5608. Both are great!
I used them at school in 80s. Later Pentel 0.5mm pencils came and these are not used anymore, but they used to be very common in Czechoslovakia. Well ... later they were plastic with lower quality and that old plastic was not chemically stable, it somewhat dissolved when it touched rubber or something. Besides of writing we used them to blow small paper balls, orange peel and so on on schoolmates :-) Not sure about marking, I think Koh-i-noor, Toison d'or and Hartmund was one company, maybe owning several brands and making pens, chalks, inks and various drawing tools. Funny is that I don't know black one, but they have unchanged design since at least 70s, my parents and grandparents had the very same.
I draw and doodle and Kohinoor is my go to brand. They're built really solidly and cost a lot less than other brands that are as well made. I favor the metal bodied ones. I have a boxed set of 2mm with the colored leads. I have a collection of 5.6s with Kohinoor's metallic leads in them which are spectacular. My favourite is that magic pencil.
Usually I just have these playing in the background to scratch a stationery itch but that super casual House of Pain lyric just startled me into laughter. Great taste in pencils and song refs!
I have the technigraph 5611 in red and i love it! Most of all the balance of the weight distribution. That, I find, is my most important metric for a daily driver. It has to feel really balanced in the hand. Love all of yours!
aw, I went to dig out my old Rotring 302 clutch pencil from my draftsmen days...But it's the first time I'm seeing a 5.6mm one, and they look FABULOUS!
Originally, these were Architectural Pencils. I have my mom's which she used in school and work at drafting tables. They're metal Italian made, "Koh-i-noor Technograghs #5611. In a pinch, I can also used them to hold quill pens for inking!
Top video. 6-8-10 sides; there is nothing wrong with being numerically illiterate. A 2mm lead holder(propelling holder) worth seeking out is the UCHIDA, it is not cheap but is very well made.
2mm leadholders used to be the backbone of the architectural drafting and engineering fields before the technical pencils became common, but we still use them a lot. I have 2mm leads going back to before WW2, as well as new ones.
i found a box of my wifes grand parents old drafting stuff, and there were 2 micropoint holders (red ones) from what im guessing is the late 60s, and like 10 different packs of berol leads, one with a date from the 30s in a wood and paper sleeved package..all work perfecty, and icant believe i went my whole life without knowing these types of pencils exits
I have quite a few clutch pencils including a few koh-i-noor ones, but I prefer the Staedtler and Faber Castell clutch pencils. However, the koh-i-noor leads are excellent and can't be beat on price, Amazon UK has them sometimes as little as £3 for pack of 12.
I have a 5347 (initially had two of them - read below to find out why it's one now) and one of the magic variety as well (5340), the 5347 has no point sharpener but you can get suitable stand-alone sharpeners for the large leads from Amazon, the only problem is that they can take a while to arrive as they are not standard stock or 'add-on' items. Ordered one and still waiting for it to turn up... I found the magic leads to be highly unusual at first and could not initially see the point in them (however the magic colouring pencils from Koh-I-Noor have combinations that blend together and make more sense). I then watched a video on youtube about it and found how rotating it while writing/shading produced some nice rainbow effects and how shifting angle of the pencil affected the mix of colours coming out. I can't see the magic leads being to everyone's taste though, I have had some fun with it and my 5 year old niece was suitably impressed - she now sports a 5340 (so that's where the other one went) in her canvas roll of colouring pencils with a magic lead installed.
+Antony Cowell (FattyMooMooMan) I'm convinced that half the fun of this interest is being able to easily share it with others. I've yet to come across another item that is highly collectable, and yet so affordable that you can share and donate them at will, glad to see you're paying it forward, I hope your niece enjoys her new 5340!
If you can't find the elusive 5.6mm lead pointer, then use a sandpaper lead pointer. Chances are, you'll find it plenty good enough! Plus it allows you to lengthen the sharp edge as long or short as you need it, if you use it for shading.
I like leaseholders for edc because I used to carry a pen put I would much rather carry a pencil but sometimes they are not that practical because the tip can get broken while in your pocket and I have had pencils stab holes in my pockets but when I’m at home or at school I much rather a wood case pencil because for me there is just something more pleasurable about writing with a wood case pencil than a lead holder
I bought my first Koh-i-Noor leadholder in 1970 and loved it until I lost it in 2014. It was the same black & Ivory metal, but smaller than the 5900 - size 9 mechanical pencil lead fit it (blue lid). Trying to replace it, I now have two 5900s, and a couple of yellow ones, but they are larger and hold the 2mm lead - I cannot find my smaller Toison D'Or Versatile. Would love to find a replacement for my ol' favorite!
What a lovely collection of pencils. I've been thinking of getting a few koh i Noor models. I've heard of lead slipping in them. Namely the 5900,5201 and the 5228. What has your experience been?
i got a bunch of 5.6mm leadholders. i like them for really messy sketching, BUT lead hardness range is so limited. the hardess lead i can find is HB & ive looked everywhere (i personally like hard leads for sketches). maybe i could lathe down a monolith lead to 5.6mm...
Hi there I have a Kohl’s-I-Noor Versatil 5347 but no leads. Please tell me which leads to buy as the Gioconda Hardmuth doesn’t fit- diameter is too large.
Im lefty and i need people to tell me if im alone or not: am i the only one that gets irritated when the text on a pencil/pen is upside down becuse im lefty
It's how you know you're a Lefty🤣. What I really detest? Has been hunting down mechanical pencils, of which being a Lefty doesn't unwind the barrel constantly!! I've a drawer full of ones Righties swear by - yet I cannot use them, as I draw Counter-clockwise! I either stick with lead holders, pencils, or newer designed ones. Life of an artist: a never-ending story!
I know it is an old video but after watching it I went out and got myself a 5340, I love it but does anyone know if I could get a clip for it anywhere? Can I steal one from another pencil/pen that would fit?
That's the big fella, not sure if they make a clip for one. You could DIY something. Perhaps look into clips and holders for similarly sized items? Small Maglights etc
so are the 5201 or 5211 or 5900 of the 3, which one is all metal. I saw these on ebay for a reasonable price and want to order the one with all metal. also is there a big difference between 5900 and 5201.
+Asad the great Both the 5201 and the 5900 are totally metal. The 5211 is plastic with metal jaws. 5201 and 5900 are effectively the same, the 5211 has a metal clip, the 5900 has some nice stripes, not much different apart from that
+Wood & Graphite Yeah I just ordered the 5900 cause the 5201 looks too much like a wooden pencil to me. And the price on ebay for both was about the same. they were about $9.5 Canadian with free shipping.
On their official website you cannot buy the 5608. You can get them on ebay. Is there such thing as knock-offs of the 5608? If I buy one from ebay, would it be the real thing?
Knock offs? Not that I have seen, but there is always a first. KIN can be funny about where they stock stuff. I've seen 5 KIN stores in Prague all stock different things
I like using fountain pens or gel ink pens that put down nice black lines. But I need pencils for college, so is 2B good for dark lines that don't require alot of pressure. Are there darker leads?
+frank123612 Pencils are great for work like that! You can get pencils as dark as 9B, but then smudging becomes you issue. If you want a smooth and easy writer, that gives dark lines, look at B / 2B pencils. Better quality pencils tend to be smoother, as the graphite formulation is better. Blackwing make some really lovely writing pencils, the 602 or the MMX (original black one) are good starters. If you're based in Europe, take a look at Staedtler Noris in 2B, or a Koh I Noor Triograph in B or darker. Japanese pencils tend to be darker right out of the box, so a Tombow Mono 100 in 2B would be deliciously dark and smooth or maybe a Mitsubishi Uni-Star if you want something a little cheaper. Generally, once you go past 3B your lines are too smudgey to be of much good for long term notes. I use the dark pencils like sharpies, to sketch out and make diagrams etc, that tend to be short life. Feel free to send any questions or ideas to woodandgraphite@gmail.com. If there are a few people with similar questions, I'd love to do a video discussing all these topics, give people a crash course in pencil tech haha! Thanks for showing interest! Tj
I find that the lead that comes with the pencil, is darker on paper, than their 2B leads, I thought it was HB, however, they don't say anything on them but I like them better, than their 2B !! Does anybody know, what kind of lead is the one they come with? Is it HB?
I was looking for a review on the "little black one" but would have come to your video first if you just put "by Koh-i-Noor" in the title. Its strange that such a great video would leave out such basic, and necessary info in the title. Anyway, I just bought one on eBay and waiting for it.
People don't tend to know the Koh I Noor brand and RUclips makes it almost impossible to get views on these niche videos without catchy, almost nonsensical titles
I would love to see clutch pencils become more popular. I discovered clutch pencils over a decade ago and they quickly became my favorite writing instruments.
the 5.6 mm leads can be sharpened in a standard pencil sharpener. you are welcome ;)

I found a Toison D'or when cleaning my room. Now I use it all the time for drafting and sketching. I forgot where I got it.

Do you think Lead holder pencils, specifically clutch pencils, save you money long term?
+GoodLiver Gang If you exclusively use them, yes. If not, probably not!
Usually I just have these playing in the background to scratch a stationery itch but that super casual House of Pain lyric just startled me into laughter. Great taste in pencils and song refs!

+SiokHoon ONG (Nic) They are AWESOME. The sharpie of the pencil world. If you can get your hands on them, definitely do.

lol, they're actually perfect for picking up screws that have dropped when working on computers too
I have a Koh-I-Noor 5616 Clutch pencil and I totally love it!
+andresisthename They are built to last, very fun to sketch and doodle with
I only have one of the clutch pencils. They are so nice to use and look really good. Surprised really that they’re not more popular in the UK.
I love these things. Found a well-worn Koh-I-Noor Adapto 5611 (the all metal one). It's amazing.
+Semitotal I love woodcase pencils, but there is something so pleasant about the idea of these lasting decades
Really enjoyed this!!! I have made my decision on what to buy now too!!!

+neikaplay Awesome! I've just been sent a Rotring 600 to test out, looking forward to it
Wood & Graphite i love my 600, im trying to buy a rotring 800 2mm lead holder in black
Rumeel did you buy it?
I love the weathering that's happening on your blue 5340! I've yet to add a 5.6mm clutch to my collection.
+MakerMaddox It's lovely!

+Fred H The big leads definitely tend to be softer grades. Take a look at Koh I Noor, they tend to dip a lot of different grades
How much did you spend on your koh-i-noor 5608? Can't seem to find it where I'm from.
+Chelsie Lacuata It was about £8 from Prague CZ
Great video!
Hi there
I have a Kohl’s-I-Noor Versatil 5347 but no leads. Please tell me which leads to buy as the Gioconda Hardmuth doesn’t fit- diameter is too large.
Is the silver 5340 silver paint or natural aluminum? I've heard the color coating on this brand is not that great
Paint over metal. It rubs off with enough wear and tear but looks great. If you want solid, take a look at Kaweco
Great review and funny as hell for sure thanks man
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks
Nice review!
Man, you can take off the clip from the koh i noor little black one
Just unscrew the thing on the top of the clip and youre done! Np man :P
I was wondering about that. The clip tends to get in the way and I wouldn't want to break it. Thanks!

With the 5608 propelling pencil in this video, you can unscrew the bits at both ends and swap them to flip the barrel imprint around for leftys.
I know it is an old video but after watching it I went out and got myself a 5340, I love it but does anyone know if I could get a clip for it anywhere? Can I steal one from another pencil/pen that would fit?

is there any way I can get koh I noor clutch lead holders in america
Amazon I think carry a few of them, or try eBay and buy vintage ones/import from the Czech Republic
Please, is the KOH-I-NOOR VERSATIL 5900 better for drawing/sketching, than the Staedtler Mars Technico 780 ? Thanks in advance
Depends entirely on if you like it better

TJ! Is the versatile 5347 any good ? I ordered one and I'm rlly nervous
+Joe crumlish YT I love it! I remember buying a few of them in Prague, great chunky pocket pencils. Enjoy!
Wood & Graphite also was £3.99 a a good price(it came with a lead) and is it triangular
Wood & Graphite could you do a review??
+Joe crumlish YT Great price!
Wood & Graphite do I know if you can get them in person in ni? (Northern Ireland)
When you have a chance look at Elegant Utility videos of our new pencil holder and related products.

5.6mm sharpener is just a sharpener. The one you use with a woodcase pencil.

can someone direct me to where I can see a clip of how to load lead into my
Koh-i-noor 5640 Gold All Metal Lead Holder
Nancy Haynes try pushing the button on the top whilst pushing the lead inside the lead.
what about rotring?
+Justin Do That's a mechanical pencil, not a leadholder
Wood & Graphite rotring has lead holder
What is the first lead holder's name? (Kohnoon)
That says "Koh-i-noor" in a different font.
0:40 is it an all metal pencil or does it have plastic parts?
All metal!
@@WoodGraphite If you had to pick between this and the Staedler 925 series, which one would it be?
I'm currently in this dilemma :p
I almost universally prefer Koh I Noor
@@WoodGraphite Just one more thing. Have you faced issues with the sharpening mechanism?
Nope, all seems pretty good to me
Do a top 5 writing pencils or colig as I say I don't remember how to spell it sorry
Pls
+L It's on the list!
I have the orange one, I cant get the lead out of it, the clutch is too tight. Bad design

the 5.6 is sooooo heavy XD
Just dug mine out the other day, it's a beast!
Ya even is the us we don't have that many clutch pencils.
Tk9400 or e+m
Breaking the lead in half does not give you twice as much. That’s like giving you 4 one dollar bills and telling you you’ve got more money…..
So sad you left

Try that "beeeeep" with headphones!
i need a 5.6 clutch for my leads I won..
I have a 2.0 From Russia though and 7 different leads..Strange scale numbers....not H or B but Cool..
"loads of lead holders"
You have no other brand than Koh-i-noor.
You should get a Staedler Mars Technico 780 C.
That bip part is so annoying. 😒
You probably add it thinking it was cool, but it isn't. 😐
