      I bought one of those a few years ago in 0.3mm . It was a total disappointment. The internal parts had a lot of play. There was so much misalignment between the moving parts that they would break the lead just from pressing the button. It wasn't functional.

      It’s nice they have actors with the capability but it’s supper important to realize it’s not about taking the time, not everyone is able to pronounce every sound and if a sound isn’t used in a language you learned young coping mechanisms for hiding stutters and other pronunciation challenges otherwise unnoticeable.

    Oh this brought back memories from the days I was a Draughting Cadet in the late 70s early 80s. Looks like a mechanical pencil hasnt really changed. Staedtler, Rotring, Faber Castell and later the pentel ones. Except we only used a 0.5 and then did all the real work with draughting pens from 0.18 up to 2mm. Still have all of them as well. Lettering stencils, drop compass, bow compass for tiny circles, oh wow, memory lane.

  • @MFSG67

    My favourite made it in your list! The Pentel Graph Gear 1000. I'm prone to irritate the side of my middle finger due to the constant friction with the barrel. The raised rubber in the barrel of this pencil helps a lot.

  • @JeffreySJonas
    @JeffreySJonas 4 года назад

    WOW, I *never* saw some of those features before such as adjustable sleeve! Thanks so much for the clear descriptions and close up views. The Rotring 600 is my fave now: hefty and inviting to use every day. I prefer real METAL knurled grips, so my red Koh-I-Noor will never feel neglected.

  • @boperadotto8703
    @boperadotto8703 2 года назад +44

    The Graph Gear 500 is my personal favorite, but my first recommendation is always Pentel's P200 lineup. They're inexpensive enough to serve as an entry-level or to buy in bulk and are remarkably durable and reliable, though I would recommend sticking to the original dull colors as the shinier plastics don't feel as sturdy. I used the same P207 all through middle school, high school, and university, and the only age it shows is some worn metal and a slight sponginess to the mechanism.

  • @dandeflavis7004

    I am a finish carpenter and I use the Pentel GraphGear 1000, I have .7 and .9 with different leads depending on what i'm doing, it allows me to make very precise marks for cutting or carving, I also like how small the amount of lead per click is. I just wish the body was thicker so it would stay behind my ear better, since the weight to size doesn't allow it to. Other than that I love it.

    I’m extremely picky on the pencils to suit my needs. The rotring 800 mechanism and wobble feels very cheap. The 600 non retractable lead is a deal breaker for me. The rapid pro seems very fine, a normal high quality pencil. I currently use the pental gg 1000, and although the inside is not aluminium, it is an awesome pencil, its mechanism is very interesting. Next ones i will try is the ohto and the pipe lock!

    Ive got most of them. The OHTO Super ProMecha is fully adjustable and a very good aluminum pencil, the Rotring 600 is a classic and it'll never let you down (I think its made of brass), I always keep a Pentel in my bag and the Graph Gear 1000 is probably one of the best pencils Pentel ever made, the Platinum Pro was too large for my taste (thats just me - it is a really fine pencil), but the Pilot S20 is just perfect in every way. Its a shame they dont make them in 0.7 and 0.9. When I bought these they were being sold as Pilot NAMIKI S20.

    Was hoping the Staedtler 925 25 (aluminums) would have been on here. I can concede that they don't have a ton of extra bells and whistles, but they feel so fancy as a set. If I were to give them a selling point like the rest on the list, it's the breadth of the lineup, as they come in a .3/.5/.7/.9/1.3/2.0, and gave a partnered pencil grip. If you want something that covers the whole range and won't make you change your grip or handle differently between sizes, those might be your choice.

    i bought my pro use 171 one year ago, and since then it become my favorite mechanical pencil of all time.
    it has low balance, so it write and draw easily, and the knurling grip is long and comfortable.
    and most of all, the lead protect mechanism work like cushion, so you can easily adjust your line variation with this pencil.
    if i have to pick one downside, its the clip. the clip is too long, and the end of the clip is also pointy so it easily poke your hand. and since the barrel is completely rounded, it rolls off if you remove its clip. kinda make me wish they make the body hexagonal, or make its clip more smaller and less pointy.

    Surprised you did not include the Pentel Graphgear 500 here, even if they are the Japanese PG51x version with the lead hardness indicator rather than the U.S. version PG52x. As a teacher with well over 100 Mechanical Pencils in my collection the workhorse Graphgear 500 (PG527) is the pencil that goes to my classroom everyday for the past 7 years. It is the best all a round price vs high quality mechanical pencil in my book.

    I've been drafting all my life, now CAD. Still, I couldn't resist getting a good drafting pencil a few months ago. Being the complete nerd I am, I bought the Rotring 800 (in black, brass accents) because I could retract the tip. Costly, but also a career celebration in a way.

    I've always used the Graphgear or Rotring, either brand are excellent and sturdy enough for the beating they take in my line of work.

    I really don’t like the retracting mechanisms. I’ve had one break on me right out of the package and it’s scared me away from them since. Besides, I usually keep mine in a good case, so they don’t get damaged anyway. That said, pentel makes a pencil called a graphlet which seems to be comparable to the graphgear here and it’s basically my favorite pencil I’ve ever gotten. Very sturdy and a nice grip!

      Yeah I don't like the retractable sleeves, I've never had a sleeve break on me and also the retractable sleeve mechanism tends to have a slight looseness or wiggle to it which drives me insane when using it.

    The Rotring 500 is also amazing and in my opinion better than the 600. It has a durable plastic body instead of brass which makes it much lighter, and also jams significantly less.

    My uncle’s wife works on a ferry. She’s a first mate and because of that she has a lot of writing to do. This’d be great for her. Yes, drafting pencils come in different colours, including pink!

    Is it possible to retract/expose the tip of the Ohto Super Promecha 1500P by pressing the button that is also used to extend the lead? Or the only way is to twist the grip?

    • @JetPens
      @JetPens  4 года назад +1

      Yes, the twisting is just to customize how much of the lead sleeve you want shown.

    I have the Pentel GraphiteGear 500 in .5 which I like using for finer drawings with a softer lead, but my main drafting pencil is the Lamy Safari, very light weight with a .7 lead, solid plastic, the barrel and trigrip is the same as its main counter part which is a fountain pen (which I use one as my work horse), and comes with a dejammer.

    I bent many .3mm, .5mm and .7mm by accident drop in past 30 years ago. Cost about $7 each which expensive that years, but right now like above $10 each.
    I want to collect that pencils again someday.

    Too any artists out there, the Platinum Pro-Use II is an amazing pencil. It is without a doubt the most comfortable pencil I've ever used for long drawing sessions. It somehow manages to feel as sturdy as a Rotring 600, yet manages to be a fraction of its weight. It's also one of the few pencils that remains comfortable when holding it in different positions (higher up for sketching, closer to the tip for details). Absolute must for those who love to sketch.

    I've tried a bunch of drafting pencils-from expensive to cheap. I always come back to the Pentel P205. It's sturdy, reliable and has perfect balance. The more expensive pencils tend to be too heavy for my tastes-I just love these Pentels.
