    Your series of residential courtyards reminds me of something out of Hassan Fathy's designs. Very cool!

    How did u build them different without leveling each one as u went up and it came out spot on same size bond so it matches up ???????? Amazing work

      Thank you! Was a bit of an experiment. Can do it by feel on small things like this-just the right pressure setting the brick, etc. and this one worked out pretty dang well, to my surprise.

      Appreciate it. Yep, we kinda like making mortar more natural. And here since not a house we just trowel cut.

    Bro is it safe to have that arch without any support. I mean if we increase the height of the arch to lets say 5 ft is it gonna hold

    • @BuildingCulture

      Yep arches are incredible efficient! Strength through geometry.

    what sized footings did you build ?

    • @BuildingCulture
      @BuildingCulture  2 года назад

      Small for something like this; about 18" deep and extending about 8" beyond brick around all sides.

    Where do you get brick that has that more rustic, reclaimed look?

    • @BuildingCulture
      @BuildingCulture  2 года назад +1

      It’s a General Shale brick, called Cambridge. Out of their Denver plant.

    Could you use cinderblock in the middle instead of so many bricks? Will it have the same outcome?

    • @BuildingCulture
      @BuildingCulture  Год назад

      Technically yes. But just no reason. Triple or quad wythe w/ modular brick is meant to be used like this for building-what all the old masonry buildings do.

    Okay so modern people can do this just fine, can you explain why people are finding full size windows buried beneath street level?

  • @PrevailingFreedom

    Is there anything you do to finish the brick/mortar so that it doesn’t look so messy?

    • @BuildingCulture
      @BuildingCulture  Год назад +3

      Sure. You can use a tuck point. Going for a different look here-more organic/natural/utilitarian. Brick that’s too perfect can look sterile.

    so you purposefully dont wet the bricks so you can remove it all later?
    also the pointing work is garbage.
