The 2008 Olympics were really special (for me, anyways) because I believe that was the first time I was really aware of it and old enough to sit down in one place for long enough to watch it. For 8 year old me, it really felt like an event of universal proportions. I'm pretty sure my patriotism peaked there and has been downhill ever since.
I completely agree, I was just about to turn 13 and I spent the whole night watching the opening ceremony with the landline phone cord pulled from the kitchen to the lounge room talking to my friend about it hahaha
For me it was the 2012 Olympics in London (pretty much just cause I was only 1yo during the 2008 olympics LOL) and I genuinely thought it was the coolest thing ever like my ass was sat for every event even showjumping 😭😭 as well as that cause I lived in the UK I got to go to some of the games including the basketball where I remember the Australians being *incredibly loud* LOL
same for me but 2012 in london haha i was only 3 for the 2008 olympics but well old enough for london! also i live in england and it felt like the whole country came together for the event😊
I'm still not over the fully-interactive story mode from 2010 on DS being replaced by one full of non-playable cutscenes in 2012 for 3DS. (I still enjoyed watching said cutscenes, though, mainly because the music slapped)

Vancouver 2010 (Wii) was the best one, it was my first one but also the winter setting was just so cosy and going to the little shops to buy outfits for your Miis was very cute. I loved doing the ski jumping over and over again or putting me and my friend's Miis in a bobsleigh together and riding down. Also it had Festival Mode where you could just play through the entire Olympics as your Mii (or a Mario or Sonic character). And it was really nice having the dream events be from Heroes and SA2 (I think the SA1 one was in London 2012). I just have a lot of memories with this game, it's very cosy

Lee Cocker, former developer of the series, JUST confirmed that Tokyo 2020 was the last game and there are no plans for future titles Update: Apparently The international Olympic ommittee decided to ditch the series in favor of esports and NFTs
The Mario & Sonic series was definitely a cornerstone of my childhood. Just like you, I only had played the DS versions of Beijing 2008 and Vancouver 2010 because I didn't have a Wii at the time. I always liked the novelty of having what was essentially an entirely different game on a less powerful system. It's kind of a lost art now. It was always interesting to see the differences between the two versions. The story mode of Vancouver 2010 DS was my favorite part of that game and felt like a pseudo Mario & Sonic RPG. London 2012 was also my first and only time I played a home console Mario & Sonic game. In my eyes it's the peak of the series. Best dream events, best remixes of Mario & Sonic tracks, and London Party was a fun time in my eyes. I really wanted to get into Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016, but there were just other games that caught my interest at the time (and this is coming from a Wii U owner lol) so as a kid with no job and only got money on rare or special occasions like Christmas or my birthday, I had to weigh my options (would've been cool to see a 3DS version of Sochi 2014 tho). Even at the time, I felt that the series was starting to become stale. We never got a Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic game, so I assumed the series was dead then and there, so when we got Tokyo 2020, it caught me by surprise. I only ever played the demo on the Nintendo eShop, and I thought it was okay. The new sports and their corresponding dream events were cool. The whole 8/16 bit games and another story mode were cool additions too, but it didn't really feel like much changed from previous entries. Like you said, I think the novelty of it all just worn off at that point. I wouldn't be against another entry in the Olympic series, but I'd be fine if this were the last entry. Still, I think the idea of a Mario & Sonic crossover can still excite people. It just can't be in the Olympics. Nice retrospective of the series! Fun fact, Tokyo 2020 is the first/only Mario & Sonic game to not feature playable Miis in any capacity. Every home console entry featured Miis up until this point. Yes, I forgot about them too lol.
I loved the rhythm games in these, like ribbon gymnastics, synchronized swimming, figure skating... I also loved dream trampoline in London 2012 because I could just go ham and button mash to make crazy combos
I got Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games for the DS on my 5th birthday, and to this day it's one of my favorite games of all time. I really enjoyed the story mode. The story was simple and engaging enough, and the overworld puzzles were difficult but not too difficult for a child. Both the regular and dream events were really fun, and the controls were easy to understand. To this day in my top 10 games of all time
One of things that I still find funny is that Sonic has been in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics for 3 CONSECUTIVE YEARS. 2019 with Mario, 2020 for the mobile game, and 2021 for the non-M&S Olympic video game as a costume.
I love the series as a kid. Me being a mario and sonic fan, them having a crossover game was truly a dream come true. My favorite one was the Ds version of the 2010 Olympic game. I spent hours on the story mode. I miss my ds so much 😢
I LOVED THIS GAME AS A KID! Me and two friends would get together and play literally every single wednesday before a rockclimbing class we took together. We played other games but this was our favorite, thank you for reminding me of them good ole days!
awesome to see someone cover these games!! i have my own personal anecdote about the 2008 DS title: it was my first gift from the ‘tooth fairy’, bizarrely enough. i did the whole ritual of putting my first baby tooth under my pillow and expected to get some money the next morning and i ended up getting a whole new game 🤭 i had no idea who sonic was at the time if you can believe it and was also too young to read most of their names, but i was really hooked on it regardless. very odd concept for a game but im happy it exists for the memories haha
I remember playing the 2012 London version on the Wii so much as a child. As a British child who was also a Children’s Promise baby (I got to be a part of the Olympics hype up simply for the day I was born), the 2012 London Olympics were really special.
I never played the Olympic kids growing up, but I do remember a friend of mine showing the Winter games on the DS and man, it was funny seeing Sonic and Mario characters interacting and I'm glad they did their best with this franchise for as long as they could.
I really wished that Nintendo Switch could have finally released Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games Paris 2024 this year at last especially with Olympics Paris games coming this Summer, but I guess this sucks as for some reason they decided to discontined.
I have a vivid memory of renting the Rio 2016 game at Family Video for like 3 weekends at my dad's house in a row. I remember fawning over Rosalina's beauty in Rhythm gymnastics, rage quitting at rugby, and playing table tennis online. I also remember watching the Superstore Olympics episode while playing. It was nice, and I took the time for granted. My father has passed since, and I'd give anything to do that all over again.
i'm a guy who lived in london at the time of the 2012 olympics, when i was six years old. had the game and everything. those olympics in general are super nostalgic for me, and the london 2012 game is a huge part of that. it helps that it's actually pretty good.
These games really were momentous at the time. A wild crossover. I enjoyed this game a lot, but played the Winter games much more. Figure Skating and Dream Snowboard cross were so much fun. It was definitely the most I was ever interested in the Olympics. And the winter village being interactive was a nice touch. Great video looking back on the games! The paris Olympics are coming up, but I urge yall to consider who they are letting participate before you give them any money/watchtime.
The 3DS version of London 2012 seems to have A LOT more events compared to the Wii version. From the Wii version my favorite event is rhythmic ribbon which hasn't been included in any of the future instalments. I also tend to enjoy synchronized swimming and equestrian a lot and the Londo Party was super fun! Also I wonder why they always make the handheld versions have a story mode while the console ones just get fun little side modes though a lot of customization options.
It's only a matter of time before your channel blows up. Seriously I cant imagine where you and your content will be in even a year from now. These videos are great and the keep getting better! Keep up the great work :D
I was just rethinking about my childhood and then I’ve seen it’s ending.. man i was going to buy the new game because those games were so good honestly
My personal favorites are 2010 and 2012. I still remember getting the 2012 one and the box was so pretty because it was YELLOW and it made it stand out from other Wii games (I still don’t know why they made it yellow). Also I completely forgot they made the 2016 rio games. In my opinion, the actual Olympics haven’t had much of a strong cultural impact since 2014. I agree when you say that there are more important stuff going on other than the Olympics. However, every time I think about them I feel nostalgic, having played these games multiple hours is a big part of my childhood and they also made me want to become an Olympian. Now im 22 so I think that ship has sailed. The only memory I’ll keep as an Olympian is playing as Tails in figure skating and winning with my nutcracker routine or playing soccer with my cousins and always getting fouls for always stealing the ball. Rip Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. 2007-2019
I owned the winter Olympics one for wii growing up(and still do) and I remember playing the figure skating mini game so much. My friends and I would host our own Olympics
I owned the Sochi 2014 game and I always never liked how you needed the Wiimote and friends for some of the minigames. I'm so sad that there will likely not be another one again.
I remember being so excited to play the London 2012 game on the 3DS. One of the main reasons for that was the fact that there was an equestrian event in it, haha. I played that one so much, and the story mode was a lot of fun. I played the 2008 one as well as a child, and I thought the dream events were so cool.
the first sega and nintendo game ive ever played was the london 2012 game when i was seven bc a friend of mine introduced me to it and it will always have a lasting impact on me for years to come
See, personally, i feel like they should continue the Mario and Sonic Olympic Games. I LOVED the story modes in the 2016 and 2020 games, preferring the 2016 one more being that your character kinda had to qualify for the finals of the event that the game had you play to progress, much like the irl version of the Olympics! My only gripe with this concept was Golf, and iirc, it was literally the last event to complete in the story mode, and you either had to face off against Bowser in the finals or as the boss. Either i had skill issues (which i still have with other games now lol) or golf was crazy difficult on the 3DS. Besides the story modes though, i liked putting all the main characters (Yes, not the guest ones) in tournaments, even though almost every time i got to choose which character was guaranteed to make it past the first round lol. Also, i made an Olympics streaming series on the Mario and Sonic 2020 Olympics on my Instagram page! There were just so many old and recent memories with this series, and i hate how people prefer to just think of them as mini-games because they were SO MUCH more than just that. Thank you for listening to my Ted Talk, lol
Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic games was the one game I remember being addicted to as a child. So much so, I even snuck out at night to play it, turning the entire volume of the TV down and tried to play it silently (although the wii remote was loud AF making sounds as I played the game LMAO) I have so many fond memories of this game, yo. And the theme song is forever living in my head rent free (also adding onto this after I typed it out: omg I forgot I played Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games on the DS aswell! IDK if it was as prominent to me as the 2012 one on the Wii, but gods, I remember that game now!)
Fun trick I was very proud to discover at age 9: You don't have to clap for the 'crowd hyping' events - you can just blow into the mic. Absolute gamechanger, just wish I worked it out earlier (My brother was studying for his exams when I got the 2008 DS game... oops).
Winter Games on the Wii was the first Mario and Sonic Olympic games I got back in 2010 (I think as a Christmas gift), and it was one of the Wii games I played the most often as a kid. I loved seeing a 50-50 collab between two of my favorite video game franchises that I could play multiplayer with my family and friends whenever they came over. One thing that stuck in my mind was how they allowed you to change the soundtrack for the events to various songs for the two franchises' past. Since this was technically one of the first Sonic games I ever got, it was my introduction to tracks like Escape from the City, Open Your Heart, the Sonic Heroes theme, and other tracks from Sonic games around the early-2000s. I also played through the festival mode for hours and loved unlocking different customization options for my Mii to wear in events.
I remember playing a lot of the 2010 Winter Olympic games as a kid on the ds and later the wii version. It was in fact the first time I've knew there were more Sonic characters than just him, Tails and Eggman lol. And by the time 2012 was announced I was HYPED, from the overall music, the intro and the look of it all, it is imo one of the best entries in the olympics saga
I've only played the DS 2008 Olympics one and I love it, I'm really surprise that we might not have a 2024 one. In Brazil the Olympic Games are a big deal and everybody is hyped about it
I collected every single game as a kid, the only one I don’t have is Tokyo 2020, I had all of them on my Wii other than rio 2016, which I saved all my money for an entire 3ds just so I could play that game 💀I played these games religiously, my favorite was London 2012
I never was a Sonic fan, but these games were among my favourite games every time they released. Using the 3DS step counter for the marathon was a genius idea for the Rio game.
omg this was so nostalgic!! I didn't fully remember all of the games/competitions in the versions I played until this video!! This unlocked memories 🙌🏻✨ I honestly loved the dream long jump bc it was so rewarding when you managed to land on an island, i think i really mastered that competition when i was younger 😅 and the cycling, fencing, archery, dream basketball!! It honestly made me surprised to see how many of the competitions and how many versions of this game i actually played!! I'd probably be really bad at them now but child me was putting in the hours!!😄🙌🏻✨
my sister and i used to go ham on the 2008 game for the wii and i got the 2010 winter olympics for my DS. it’s definitely a more enjoyable game on the wii (with motion controls) imo but since then i haven’t touched the series bc i never thought it would have anything new :\ would def love to see a future sonic and mario collab tho. i’ve always been desperate for sonic to be added to mario kart or have sonic themed tracks…

I never played the Olympic kids growing up, but I do remember a friend of mine showing the Winter games on the DS and man, it was funny seeing Sonic and Mario characters interacting and I'm glad they did their best with this franchise for as long as they could.
I really wished that Nintendo Switch could have finally released Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games Paris 2024 this year at last especially with Olympics Paris games coming this Summer, but I guess this sucks as for some reason they decided to discontined.
vancouver DS and london Wii will always be PEAK for me
How sad they dropped the series. My friends and I still play the Dream Events in the Rio 2016 Wii U to this day.
I loved this game so much. I remember being pissed off that Cream the rabbit was not a playable character
And now nfts are the reason why we aren’t getting more games…
This series is pretty fun honestly, not only is it a cool collaboration between two gaming icons, its just hilarious to see them in these situations
My father has passed since, and I'd give anything to do that all over again.
oh hell yeah dude I'm so glad I've found your channel!! this is the random niche hyperfixation youtube content I'm here for
London 2012 still has my heart to this day. It’s definitely one of the best games the franchise has to offer.
i'm a guy who lived in london at the time of the 2012 olympics, when i was six years old. had the game and everything. those olympics in general are super nostalgic for me, and the london 2012 game is a huge part of that. it helps that it's actually pretty good.
happy olympics week rany moon
Ah Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games… my first Sonic game.
Me and my girlfriend make Sim noises and Sim actions to these videos and their entirety
This is actually fire
Will never forget the magic of the 2010 wii winter olympics, I feel like I spent hundreds of hours on it as a kid.
Hah I remember being ranked pretty high online for a brief period in the 400m with Knuckles on the wii online rankings in 2008.
17:42 this is so real I was so mad I couldn't play as Daisy whenever I wanted to
Man the Winter games story mode on the DS were such a thing for me when I was a kid, idk why but I loved that fkn game and story
It's only a matter of time before your channel blows up. Seriously I cant imagine where you and your content will be in even a year from now. These videos are great and the keep getting better! Keep up the great work :D
those games where my childhood, love them all
I was just rethinking about my childhood and then I’ve seen it’s ending.. man i was going to buy the new game because those games were so good honestly
I remember playing the DS version of Vancouver 2010 a lot. Especially the story mode.
Really underappreciated games tbh! I shrugged them off for years but back in 2022 I gave em a shot at a friend's place and had a blast.
Babe wake up, randy moon dropped another banger
me fav channel, such a gem
The DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games has a special place in my heart. The story mode, the games, modes, characters... 😭😭😭😭😭
I remember having the winter one on DS and I really enjoyed the story mode.
This game was like peak autism for me bc it combined all my hyperfixations and special interests at the time lol
Thanks for the nostalgia. My touchscreen must be traumatized still of how much I played this back then 🥲
the first sega and nintendo game ive ever played was the london 2012 game when i was seven bc a friend of mine introduced me to it and it will always have a lasting impact on me for years to come
See, personally, i feel like they should continue the Mario and Sonic Olympic Games.
So much so, I even snuck out at night to play it, turning the entire volume of the TV down and tried to play it silently (although the wii remote was loud AF making sounds as I played the game LMAO)
I have so many fond memories of this game, yo. And the theme song is forever living in my head rent free
(also adding onto this after I typed it out: omg I forgot I played Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games on the DS aswell! IDK if it was as prominent to me as the 2012 one on the Wii, but gods, I remember that game now!)
Another randy moon hit!!!!
Fun trick I was very proud to discover at age 9: You don't have to clap for the 'crowd hyping' events - you can just blow into the mic. Absolute gamechanger, just wish I worked it out earlier (My brother was studying for his exams when I got the 2008 DS game... oops).
As a kid I don't think I realised how massive this was for Sonic and Mario to be in the same game. I was kinda just like oh that's cool.
The games were just confirmed to be cancelled… damn.
I also played through the festival mode for hours and loved unlocking different customization options for my Mii to wear in events.
this could be the nostalgia and growing up in vancouver during this era talking but the 2010 game will always be the best instalment in my head
I miss this series I like seeing Mario characters and Sonic characters interacting with each other
I remember playing a lot of the 2010 Winter Olympic games as a kid on the ds and later the wii version.
Just stubbled across your youtube channel, I love your thoughts, and thus your videos. I subscribed and liked your videos.
I never was a Sonic fan, but these games were among my favourite games every time they released. Using the 3DS step counter for the marathon was a genius idea for the Rio game.
sonic and mario winter olympics on the wii was my everything in my childhood
This woman stares at your soul
Yoshi should be a wild one and Bowser should be a challenger
Certified hood classics! The DS version of the 2008 games, 2010 winter games for the Wii and 2012 games for the Wii were a part of my childhood ❤
the winter olympic games story mode part of the ds game was like one of my favorite video game things ever.
Let’s make Mario and sonic at the Paris Olympic Games happen
i vividly remember the Wii U sochi winter olympics games! i had a lot of fun with it and i need to see if i still have it
omg this was so nostalgic!! I didn't fully remember all of the games/competitions in the versions I played until this video!! This unlocked memories 🙌🏻✨
I honestly loved the dream long jump bc it was so rewarding when you managed to land on an island, i think i really mastered that competition when i was younger 😅 and the cycling, fencing, archery, dream basketball!!
It honestly made me surprised to see how many of the competitions and how many versions of this game i actually played!! I'd probably be really bad at them now but child me was putting in the hours!!😄🙌🏻✨
Would have loved to see entries for Beijing 2022 and Paris 2024.
yet the game devs chose NFT’s…
i have the 2010 winter games and 2012 london games both on wii still and my god were those games such a big part of my childhood
Mario & Sonic at The Olympic Games needs to return!
Making sonic swim is so mean…. Put that hog back on land…
Subbed keep doing what you're doing
my sister and i used to go ham on the 2008 game for the wii and i got the 2010 winter olympics for my DS. it’s definitely a more enjoyable game on the wii (with motion controls) imo but since then i haven’t touched the series bc i never thought it would have anything new :\
would def love to see a future sonic and mario collab tho. i’ve always been desperate for sonic to be added to mario kart or have sonic themed tracks…
Used to play the 2008 edition on the Wii with my cousin. Sadly her Wii stopped working.
