- Mount Pinatubo is an active volcano located on the island of Luzon in the Philippines, about 90 km northwest of Manila. The mountain is most notorious for its eruption in June 15 1991, the second-largest eruption of the 20th century after the 1912 eruption of Novarupta in Alaska. The effects of the eruption were felt worldwide, ejected large amount of aerosols into the stratosphere, causing global temperatures dropped by about 0.5 °C.
We woke up very early in the morning around 3 am to get to the starting point of our hike to Mount Pinatubo. Due to the large number of people travelling during the festival period, we were caught in a traffic jam. It took us nearly 6-hours (more than 2x the time), to finally reached the gateway to the mountain.
We then took another 1.5 hour jeep ride on the eroded earth, which was very rough and bumpy, and so very dusty too. At around 10am, we started our hike under the hot sun until we reached the crater lake in the afternoon time.
Hiking to an active volcano is an exhilarating experience…Although swimming in the crater lake is strictly prohibited, dipping our legs into the water had made me felt so alive!
Beautiful crater shot... Its so huge
I have hiked this via a difficult trail and when I have seen the crater lake after a 10 hour grueling hike, my jaw literally dropped. It's one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen
