"Pulls the darkness out of you" is such a great way to describe the music, because it expresses one of the central themes of the game (and on at least some metaphorical level, is what's happening in the scene). The fact that you interpreted this from the music alone, without ever having played the game, demonstrates Yoko's talent.

The lyrics in this song are Italian.
And it really is a killer track, it's been amazing hearing the song (and all the amazing music of the series) evolve over the years from it's original, highly compressed synths on the PS2 to this most recent generation with HD audio recordings of orchestra and choir.
    Original Italian lyrics
    Destati!
    Tendi la mano!
    È giunta l'ora,
    Destati
    Le porte verranno schiuse
    Destati, Destati, Destati
    Su rimembra tu trepida!
    Su sveglia! Ehi ricorda!
    Destati! Destati!
    Forza, tendi la mano!
    Destati! Destati!
    È giunta l'ora!
    E ancora una volta
    Apriranno le porte!
    Su rimembra tu trepida!
    Su sveglia! Ehi ricorda!
    Eh? Come? Non lo vuoi!?
    Tuttavia t'appartiene
    Ciò che hai perduto
    Diventerà uno solo!
    English translation
    Awaken!
    Hold out your hand!
    The time has come,
    Awaken
    The doors will be parted
    Awaken, Awaken, Awaken
Come on, remember, you who tremble!
Come on, wake up! Oh, remember!
    Awaken! Awaken!
Come on, hold out your hand!
    Awaken! Awaken!
    The time has come!
    And once again
    They will open the doors!
Come on, remember, you who tremble!
Come on, wake up! Oh, remember!
Eh? What? You do not want it!?
    Still it belongs to you
    What you have lost
    Will become one!

This song was fairly forgettable when I first heard it way back when I played Kingdom Hearts 1 on the PS2. When I eventually found that the lyrics weren't gibberish that sound good I looked them up along with the translation. This tune immediately became a favorite and now has a deeper personal meaning. While the Kingdom Hearts series definitely has its feel good Disney and melodrama final fantasy moments, there are subtle things throughout the games that are deep, well thought out, and meaningful. I am grateful for the people who have made tracks like this so those of us who dig deep can find a nugget of true beauty.

Loved the reaction. I love the Kingdom Hearts music. If you are curious about the context of the game where this song plays- An iteration of this melody has played in each of the games. Mostly at the start where the main character of the game is in a "realm" of inner reflection or their "heart". It acts as a tutorial for some basic controls of the games and it starts out very serene. As it slowly introduces combat with small enemies the music grows and finally crescendos into a boss battle as you fight a creature of darkness.
Nerd talk tl;dr: You picked up on the exact emotions the composer wants you to feel and it goes hand in hand with the gameplay.

    • @enigmafleur9984
      @enigmafleur9984 10 месяцев назад

When playing the game, there's essentially a part of the tutorial where you are given a choice between three weapons: A staff, shield or sword. Each is representative of magic or MP, defense or vitality, and damage. It's also present in most Kingdom Hearts games.

This plays in the tutorial of all places. The softer part of the music is when you are learning some of the controls. A giant heartless, basically a manifestation of darkness, appears as the music swells in intensity. It is funny you mention the darkness of the music because that is a major theme of the game. A lot of Yoko Shimura's tracks have this element of softer music tones and building the intensity as the song goes on. She has this tenancy to use lots of violins and pianos in her music. I do recommend Darkness of the Unknown as one of my favorite tracks from the games. I will put the link here if you are interested in it. ruclips.net/video/O4JV25709Hs/видео.html

This is an orchestral arrangement of the same titled piece from the first Kingdom Hearts game (2002) and it plays at the beginning of the game when the protagonist actually has a dive into his own heart. The second part of the piece plays when he faces the darkness in his heart, so yeah, it makes sense to be so intense. 😁
Music is very important in this game series.
I would suggest to listen to Dearly Beloved (from Kingdom Hearts 2 in particular) as it's representative of the series (despite its simplicity)

It’s less like a coffin being carried in the rain and more like an awakening from the heart. Like if you had a door in your heart you were trying to run to. And during this awakening you had to make choices of what was most important to you. And right as you felt ready. Right as you felt you had every choice just right to open the door, a great obstacle comes before you. And now you have to fight. You need to fight that obstacle. Whether it’s doubt or insecurity or just the darkness you feel lingering inside your heart. And when you finally finish the fight, there’s a moment of recollecting the encounter and understanding your choices.
The Destati arrangements are the first thing you hear as soon as you click “New Game” and playing along to the music you feel that intensity and that anxiety. You get those goosebumps and maybe for a moment you think “wow this is real. This is happening right now.”

Feels like my birthday. Geebz has been doing songs from games & anime that I(& others) have been recommending, though I didn't recommend this specific song.
Kingdom Hearts is this mash-up of Disney & Square Enix IPs that just somehow works. There is a total of 10 Kingdom Hearts games with 2 in development, there is 3 additional releases that are repackaged/remastered versions of those 10(ie put multiple games on one disc). To put that in perspective, Halo has 16 games in the Halo universe, though only 8 are considered to be part of the main story line.
All 3 main entries of the kingdom hearts series have an opening done by Hikaru Utada that are J-Pop & EDM/elctro house (3rd one w/ Skrillex).
*Simple & Clean* by Hikaru Utada from Kingdom Hearts 1

it's so brilliant that w so many of the cold listens you're hitting the emotional themes right on the head. the context within the video-game universe "dive into the heart" being an actual passage into a manifestation of a person's soul to literally fight and exorcise the darkness within them. so the second phase of the song *is* a battle theme. if you liked this track you should listen to some of the boss-fight themes. the bassoon, oboe and organ arrangements are fantastic.

This is a bit late but re: language, if I remember correctly yoko shimomura usually uses latin in her choral arrangements (evident in the titles she uses), in contrast to hiroyuki sawano who used to use a mix of german and english earlier on (but now I *think* he's using more english and japanese), or another composer kajiura yuki, who uses a made up language of mashed up latin, english, spanish, japanese, and some others.
I would honestly love to see you marathon the kingdom hearts OST since yoko shimomura has this fun thing going wherein she incorporates themes between characters who are related to each other, and it's so fun to listen to.

Hello from France "old composer" :) ! I love your reaction videos! I heard this song for the first time at christmas 2002, I was 12. Yoko Shimomura blew my mind. I never heard another song who define the arrival of darkness as good as this music did.
Try different versions of Dearly Beloved (the one from Melody of Memories is more jazzy, made me cry a lot haha)

love your reactions! found your channel from this, definitely going to check more from you thanks for making this, hope to see you react to more kingdom hearts music, it's truly magnificent. This one specifically was a song I heard when I was only a child back when it first came out, and to hear it become this beautiful transformation.
There's a haunting discussion about this song when they made it, says on the wiki, "The chorus is often used in other pieces, but whenever the chorus was loaded by Square Enix staff, something bad happened, an example being the entire building's electricity getting cut off."

Another couple of tracks from the Kingdom Hearts series worth checking out are Mystic Moon and Critical Drive from the DS game Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. They're actually variants of the "exploration" and "fight" themes for the final area of Kingdom Hearts 2 (Playstation 2) called Sacred Moon and Deep Drive respectively, but (for narrative reasons) the DS version hits a little bit harder.

I'm so glad I found you channel! It was such a joy seeing you react and explain this piece. As someone not at all trained in music, it's so fascinating to see the detail you effortlessly pull from a section. I sincerely hope you do at least one more from Kingdom Hearts. It has some of my favorite compositions ever. The KH series is partnered with Disney and Yoko did an incredible job scoring the series to complement a classic Disney feel, while still being completely original. I'd highly recommend:
Hikari (Simple and Clean) orchestral version (KH 1 theme)
Passion (Sanctuary) orchestral version (KH 2 theme - my favorite)
Dearly Beloved - Yoko Shinomura (overall KH theme)
With those first two it would be super cool to see something similar to your Zanarkand video where you watch the versions from the game openings first before the orchestral. I would be amazing to see what you think of the iteration changes.

Really interesting to see someone without context for the series listen in and pick up on exactly what the song is trying to communicate in those scenes! The KH series has incredible music throughout thanks to Yoko Shimomura-- I also highly recommend the main theme song Dearly Beloved (There's a new version with each entry in the series and any version is great, but the Kingdom Hearts 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3 versions are probably the biggest fan favorites), and Darkness of the Unknown from Kingdom Hearts 2 (my favorite boss fight music in the series).
Yoko Shimomura also composed most of the soundtrack for Final Fantasy XV as well-- Omnis Lacrima is her magnum opus IMO (search "Final Fantasy XV/Versus XIII - Omnis Lacrima (Original Ver.)" for the best arrangement of it!) If you stick with this side of the video game world, lots of other Final Fantasy games have amazing soundtracks, too! Nobuo Uematsu's One Winged Angel has probably already been rec'd by a bunch of people here, but I'm also a big fan of the Ending Credits music from Final Fantasy XIII by Mahashi Hamauzu-- it's beautiful and I don't think it gets enough recognition!

Would personally recommend Somnus, Valse di Fantastica, Blues de Chocobo, Apocalypsis Noctis, Omnis Lacrima, Song of the Stars, Ravus Aeterna, and Hellfire.
I know it's a lot, but these are some of my favorite tracks from the game! Honestly, if you decide to give any of them a listen, just pick the one that jumps up at you the most.

Hey I love your channel and the commentary you give is really interesting. There's like 5000 songs I'd like to see you react to, but I'm aware that you probably get tons of requests already so if I had to choose just one... but I would LOVE to hear your take on Dancing Mad, composed by Nobuo Uematsu for Final Fantasy VI. It is a rather long piece of music, but it is a classic that deserves a listen and is basically a rite of passage for video game music reaction channels at this point. If you won't do it for a video at least please please please, listen to it in your own time, it is well worth it. There is also an amazing version made by the Black Mages, which is Nobuo Uematsu's actual band, which is also incredibly good.

Kingdom Hearts is a game that on the surface looks like someone's out of control Final Fantasy x Disney crossover fanfic but deep down it has the soul of an epic battle of finding light in an ever-growing shadow of despair. One of my favorite series of all time, due in no small part to the music.
