Man I love you. I was about to cry and die. You saved my sanity.
I am really happy to hear it worked out for you. I am making a new version of this one as other issue can cause it too. So if you have any further problems, be sure to come back and check the new video that will be uploaded soon.
Man, this was so helpful! I thought I had to restart my whole video.
Awesome! Glad it helped!
Unreal. Cant believe how much better editing softwares have gotten in 10 years.
Yes, it is insane and it's only going to keep getting better!
Than you so much i thought i had to do all my work again😢 Thanks!!❤
haha happy to hear you didnt have to do it all over again. Happy New Year!
i actually knew this one!!! Would you look at that!! Great video as usual, Chad - thanks.
Thats great! Thanks for watching!
Thanks, Chad, for a handy video on relinking files. I’ve moved from Final Cut Pro to DaVinci Resolve Studio and am very happy with the move! I’ve subscribed to your channel and wish you great success building your audience. Thanks again.😊
Hey Jay! Thanks for watching! I also switched from FCP. You definitely chose the right editing software to change to!
Ive had to this this before. After im done with a project i nobe it to an external hhd. But when i want to grab a clip of an older video to add to a new video i always have to fo this.
Thanks Chad
Happy to help! Hope it simplifies it for you
Thank you so much! This was a major problem today until i found your video.
Awesome! Happy it helped you!
Hey there Chad! I liked your video a lot but I am still having issues relinking my media... I have only 2 mp4 files I need to relink, and they were originally unlinked because I renamed the video files. Whenever I follow the steps you outlined, it continues to say it cannot locate the files. Do you have any tips for my issue?
Hey Mileschen, sorry to hear about the issue. I would assume you have edited some and do not want to have to cut them up again.
What I would suggest is that you go up to the "Playback" menu, then go down to "Delete Render Cache > All" once you do that, then relink the media. Or try to relink the media first and delete render cache. Try to restart DaVinci if you must as well.
If that does not work, are you able to rename the files to what they were originally named? The names should be listed on the clips you put on the timeline. Select the clip on the timeline and check the name above the inspector window.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Can you create a video on how you created that timeline? Please? It looks astonishing and complex, also a video on how to make quality reels?
Hey! Thank you very much! As it goes for the timeline, I am going to be doing some new videos that will really improve the how to do everything in DaVinci Resolve 19.
However, I do have an old video about making some templates. You can view that here ruclips.net/video/sPz8AqEQAwc/видео.html
However I will be updating some better information soon. That does include some timelines for you to work with.
This video about 6 tips for faster editing is also helpful for stuff like that ruclips.net/video/xJTBF1z1NYk/видео.html
As for doing reels, you mean for Instagram? I am currently not making them, but I will be sometime soon, so once I start focusing on that, I will make some tutorials.
Thanks for all these awesome suggestions!
@@chadmullins7553 thanks for sharing👍, I haven't seen the 1st link of this comment, I will surely watch it, it's really helpful for me in the long run. Well by reels, I also meant shorts, short form videos, actually nowadays people are editing really good shorts/reels that are informative and to the point, if you can create one that would be awesome and ofcourse that amazing timeline in this video👍
@@shivamroy04 Thanks for the suggestion! I will look into doing some shorts in the future too, so we will see!
Waow thank you !!!!
Glad to hear it helped you!
Thanks! You the best.
Happy it helped you!
What about when it's saying media offline before you even add it to the timeline? It's doing it in the media pool right after I import it. I keep getting this and it's making me batty.
Hey! Sorry to hear you are having this issue... There are many reasons why the media might be offline... When I posted this video, it was the most common issue, however it has increased a lot recently with other reasons...
First thing, many new people have come to DaVinci Resolve, so it's becoming more common that people are using unsupported codec. If you are using the Studio Version, this would usually not be the issue. If using the free version, there are quite a few codecs which are not supported, especially certain drone footage and cellphone footage.
Just wanted to point that out, so if you have an unsupported codec, you can have it converted to something that is supported. There are a lot of simple apps that can convert the footage very easily out there.
Other reasons could be GPU and others. Be sure you computer meets the requirements of DaVinci Resolve. Feel free to update me with your specs and any other questions you have along the way.
@chadmullins7553 99 percent of the vids I use are downloaded from RUclips. Some vids have no problem. I'm not using the free version.
@@The-Game-Adaptation-Newscast I see... When you download them, are they webM? It is most likely a codec issue.
You can convert it with something like HandBrake. Try to change it to something like h.264 or even mp4.
I don't have the media offline on my timeline, but it does appear on the processed video. I've processed this project 6 times in the last 4 days. I've narrowed down the location within 2 seconds. I return to my timeline, and everything looks fine. I relinked the problem video clips despite not having them indicate media offline. One was fixed, the other remains. In fact, the clip that is still an issue is right next to the same clip. I needed to repeat the clip for timing the dialog. The first part has no issue, the second clip shows media offline for an instant, but only on the processed video uploaded from the deliver page. Then a new one popped up (media offline 3 minutes later in a place that wasn't a problem before. The "Relink Media" icon is not red. I'm stumped.
Sorry to hear you are dealing with that... It is really annoying. DaVinci is really sensitive and this is happening way too often. I have had something like this happen too. I manually removed the media from DaVinci Resolve and then brought the media back in to replace it, which solved my issue.
If you are using proxies, that also could possibly cause that. So if you have proxies, try to disable that. If you have done any render in place, than decompose it and then try again.
I was hoping to give you a positive update now that 8 days has past. I'm still working at it. It's like whack a mole. I have to upload to RUclips to find precisely where the media offline glitch shows up since it only appears in the final product. The upload itself takes several hours. I have removed the original 2 glitches, only to have a new 2 show up somewhere else, then I fix those and one will come back. My latest upload today has everything fixed but then a new one just as short as a blink of the eye shows up where there wasn't an issue any of the other 8 times, but its there. I have 8 more videos to produce. I can't start the next one until I fiqure this out. I most assuredly can't afford to take 8 or more days to upload a video that has nothing offline on the timeline. I've done more than 14 uploads! Private ofcourse until I can solve this riddle. This first project is a struggle for sure.@@chadmullins7553
@@thedisciplestable5215 I'm so sorry to hear that...
This is really ridiculous... Recently DaVinci has had so many issues and is very sensitive to this...
What computer are you using? What are the computers stats?
What sounds like the issue to me is DaVinci Resolve is having a GPU related issue. While reading and writing the file during the export it is missing part of the media...
Are there any color grades, motion graphics, adjustment clips or anything above the secitions that keep going off-line ?
Before you export again, what I suggest you do is go to "Playback" then go down to Render Cache and turn the render Cache to "None"
Next Delete all cache. Restart DaVinci and then prepare for export.
At least this way there won't be any cache that can be corrupted and might allow for it to read and write correctly.
@@chadmullins7553 I really appreciate your insight. It's a brand-new computer "built to handle DaVinci", I was told by my IT guy. Although this list says it does not have a second drive, it does. It has a C and E drive. There are no color grades. There are motion graphics. The issue was at first over 2 motion graphics each 24 frames. The next renders, I fixed those, then it was found to show up where there were video transitions. Fixed those. Then the next renderings were over my PowerPoint mp4 files with no extras. I've gotten rid of the cache before. but it will have to be done again. Cache was set up to be sent to C drive on a different computer and placed in a One drive folder. (IT guy liked it that way, although he is unfamiliar with Davinci, he's an Adobe Premiere guy). My C drive (235G) isn't as big as my E drive (931G). I want to set up a proper template for the next project and move all to the E drive. I also have a SSD 3T. Presently on the last render and this next one I am trying to take sections of properly rendered videos and place them over the "bad spots". It's tedious, but thankfully I have 3 monitors to use to review the flaws on YT and fix them on the timeline. @@chadmullins7553 I appreciate your insights. The last 3 videos had sections that were not corrupted; therefore, I used those sections to overlay wherever I had a media offline frame. This took 2 additional renders to get right. Finally, just now!! I have a clean uploaded video on YT. I did as you recommended and deleted all cache. I had done this at the start of the very first video that I uploaded, and this was the one with the first 2 clip media offline issues. So perhaps the combination of using parts of various properly rendered videos with a once again deleted cache did the trick. I am going to share the specs of my new computer, "built to handle DaVinci Resolve", said my IT guy who placed the order on my behalf. But after him telling me not to delete ANYTHING including the cache except for perhaps twice a year, and his not having any knowledge of DaVinci because he was formerly a video editing guy for Hollywood using Adobe Premiere....just maybe my computer is not built as it should be. Therefore, I do appreciate your review. The specs will say that it only has one C: drive (235GB), but I assure you it has a second one named E: drive (931GB). Here is the description. I've just decided to dive into the free version of davinci. I have just freshly installed it and directly gets the "Media offline". I do store all my files on an external drive that I know is online and working, and I have tried yours and others wy to relinking the clip without any progress. Not sure what to do as I literally just opened it up and it dosen't work.
Hey! Sorry to hear you are having troubles right from the start. I have a couple of questions first.
Are you adding the media to DaVinci resolve and it immediately shows up as media offline?
Did you previously have the media already in there and now it says offline?
@@chadmullins7553 I added it and it showed up as offline directly
Found out it was the format the free version didn't like
Im having the same issue. I am moving drone images from an sd card directly into davinci.@@chadmullins7553
I have the same problem I just started using davinci and when I put my clip it says offline and the option for relink is not available
@@Jasongt23 I am sorry to hear you are having an issue. Sounds like you are having a different issue than what I have created the video for.
Are you using the free version? It is possible the video codec is not supported in the free version.
I've been experiencing the "media offline" error, but they're on newer video files. I was working on a video with GoPro files from about 3 years ago. I tried including a clip from this past year and EVERY clip from this year gets the media offline error. I've tried relinking them multiple times, but it doesn't work no matter how many times I try.
Hey! Sorry to hear you are having difficulties. I have been a little slow on here recently, so am not replying very fast. I have heard there are issues with the codec from GoPro recently, so you may want to have your media changed to different codec to use it in DaVinci. I know it's annoying, but it is part of the process at the moment.
Just can't get this to work. I did all and it's still missing but said it's not missing but it is missing. Maybe i got all the rooting wrong. Is there a way to organise files to be efficient ? I'm loosing my mind lol
Hey! Sorry to hear you are having a difficult time with this... There has been a lot of issues with media offline recently, but it is not always about the clips being in the wrong place.
Recently, the biggest issue has been with Render Cache. If you have not already deleted your render cache, try doing that first.
Another thing could be the incompatible codec. Are you using the free version or paid version of DaVinci? Which camera did you use to record the file? Is it MP4? Mkv? and is it 10 bit?
I have another tutorial which has 8 solutions to try as well... However there still could be other things that can cause the Media Offline. It might take some time to troubleshoot it. You can check that one out here ruclips.net/video/tgF5bViUVdk/видео.html
@@chadmullins7553 i use the free version, i shoot with DJI Osmo Action 5 pro. I bought the codec on microsoft. Format is MP4. I'll watch the video.
I just copied an MP4 file from my Android phone to a folder on my desktop. When I tried to import it into the media pool, it came up as 'Media offline" I haven't moved it anywhere. When I look at the broken link icon, it isn't red. If I click on it, it says there are zero missing files. Any ideas? I'm using the free version; is it a codec issue, and it simply refuses to display the video? Thanks.
Hey! Sorry for the slow reply. It sounds like a codec issue. These do happen often with cell phone footage, especially if you are using the free version without a supported codec. However, there have been a ton of issues with Cache files as well, so you can try to delete all render cache and then check it, but it's most likely the codec.
@chadmullins7553 I've also read that it's an ongoing issue. It bummed me out. Thanks.
I’ve been having problems for a week. What about the media that just like you did toward the end you relinked it. Well for me it goes back offline I can scrub over it and it’s there but as soon as I remove the cursor it off line. It’s frustrating.
I am really sorry to hear about the issue and totally understand. It is really frustrating and I am surprised it has not been fixed as of yet.
The issues most are facing has to do with codec and GPU related issues.
We can try to trouble shoot your issue a bit so we can narrow down exactly what the issue is.
First I need to know are you using the Studio version of DaVinci or the free version?
What kind of computer? Some of the specs?
Next I need to know what kind of video footage you are using? Mp4? Mkv? 8bit? 10 bit? Cell phone?
Let me know and I will see what I can figure out
@
Thank you.
I’m using two cameras. One new the other older. Osmo 3 in 4k the other is a Sony hand cam shooting 1080p.
The Davinci free version, 19.1.1
The computer is a MacBook Pro M4pro 24gig, IPad Air M2 I’m having the same problem on both
I have moved the footage to different drives with minimal results
I have uninstalled the software from both and reinstalled no results
At present it’s just the Sony footage that is at issue. But not all of it.
The first time this happened it was after I edited and went to export. It was then that this started happening. It started with all of the footage. Again I can scrub over it in the media storage and it shows up but as soon as I remove the cursor it’s off line.
I was interested in purchasing the Studio version when this happened. I’m not so certain at present. I have edited a few other videos with this product before on a MacBook Pro with an A17 chip and if I remember correctly it was at 24gig as well, I had no issues with it then.
If you any other questions please ask.
I’m going to guess you aren’t going ant further with this. Thanks
@@graywolfwoodworks Hey! Sorry for the delay, I didnt see you previous comment. I am not sure why, but it's not listed on my RUclips studio page.
At this point, DaVinci Resolve is at 19.1.2 so you should update to that if you have no already. However, I do not think that is going to fix the issue.
It sounds to me like there is a codec issue. I know things have worked in the past, however the latest version of DaVinci Resolve seems to not work correctly with many of the codecs that were not supported. Especially in the free version.
One option would be to convert the footage to a codec it will handle better. If you can use something like movavi or handbrake, that could help you.
Once you get that switched, check the video then.
I had done a newer tutorial that does have some other solutions. I do not show how to convert the codec, I only mention it in this one, however there are other things that could possibly help with getting media back online. You can check that here: ruclips.net/video/tgF5bViUVdk/видео.html
I will usually reply within 24 hours, so if for some reason I do not, feel free to comment again and I will get on it. Not sure why I didnt see your comment previously.
@ thank you
the file was dropped into the media pool immediately said offline, what gives?
Sorry you are having trouble with this. It sounds like you may have a codec issue. Was it a cell phone video? It is possible that you are unable to use the H.265 video codec. If that is the issue, than you can convert the video file and then try uploading it. and are you using the free version or studio version?
If you are still having issues, I created a new tutorial that can help you with different possibilities. However, I do think it is something to do with your codec. Here is the tutorial ruclips.net/video/tgF5bViUVdk/видео.html
@@chadmullins7553 i recorded my desktop of 2 screens in 7680x2160, so yes codec issue. any work arounds?

Hey! I am really sorry to hear you are still having the issue. I have made an updated version for this which covers 7 other possible ways than this.
I can try to help you if you answer a few questions, but you can also view the other tutorial if you want.

When I try to relink the file explorer opens as normal, but when I try to find the videos they arent in the file that they should be in. I already checked different disks and users still cant find them.
Sorry to hear you are having such difficulties...
I just want to verify, the files you are looking for are no longer where they were originally? You have moved them and now you want to relink it?
If that is the case, than find where you put the media, then try to relink it from Davinci Resolve as you can find the specific folder you need.
If that is not the case, than it could be a different issue. You can give a little more detail and we can get it resolved.

I'm having an issue with a video clip that I dropped into the timeline. The clip is 10-bit video, and DaVinci Resolve 19 doesn't support 10-bit video. However, some people on the internet say the free version does support 10-bit video. I'm not sure what to do.
Yes, you are most likely having an issue due to using the free version and not the studio version.
I imported a bunch of files at once and most bar a couple show as offline . Relink doesn’t work. All the same file format and shot on my iPhone .
Don’t get why some load up and some stay offline no matter what I try.
The audio plays fine even if no video when I stick it on the timeline
There are multiple issues with the Media Offline. I am doing some research to fix these problems as I am writing this. I will try to get back to you as soon as I can with a possible solution and will probably do another tutorial on this which will highlight some of the other issues that cause the media offline. It is a common issue with many people right now, you are not alone.
Are you using the studio version or free version? Are your clips h.265 or h.264?
@@chadmullins7553 using the free version and importing h.264. It’s bizarre that clips can be shot minutes apart and one works and other won’t . Thanks
Still having this issue despite using this method. Keeps saying "zero clips missing" when it clearly has an issue with 2 clips.
I am really sorry to hear you are still having an issue. When you click the link icon, you are unable to attempt to relink them again?
There are several issue people are currently having with this right now. I am doing some research on it and will be trying to provide some more solutions soon.
Are you using the studio version? Or free?
@chadmullins7553 yeah, I researched it further and it seems what's wrong is ultimately the video code was corrupted and it's unfixable.
@@ravenchelsvokia Sorry to hear that. I am still going to be doing some research and maybe will find something you can try. Is the footage you are unable to use a main portion of your video?
@chadmullins7553 Nope, it was a short clip that, for some reason, just wasn't cooperating. It was like 1% of the video. The rest is fine, and I'm preparing to upload it as soon as I finish the rendering process. I do warn if you are curious about my video it isn't exactly family friendly.
@@ravenchelsvokia haha no worries about that... I would just like to see if I can help find any solution to the problem, so I can share with others in the future.
Once I figure a few things out, maybe you can give it a shot on a new timeline just to see if we can resolve the solution? It would be helpful
after i relink it goes back to offline media when i drag over the clip
Sorry to hear the issues... There are many reasons why it could be offline. I made a newer video to help with some of the other issues. This video you watched here was the most common, however other issues are becoming more common in DaVinci Resolve 19. So here is the newer tutorial which might be helpful ruclips.net/video/tgF5bViUVdk/видео.html
good
Thanks
that didn't work
I am sorry to hear it didnt work. There are many reasons that media offline happens in DaVinci Resolve, especially with 19. I have made a new tutorial which goes over a bunch more possibilities to help you. You can view that here: ruclips.net/video/tgF5bViUVdk/видео.html
HELLO, let's see if you can help me. I have the studio, and my camera is an FX3. I'm getting a media file error with specific clips when trying to render.
I've tried everything they told me. I worked directly from the files on my MACBOOK PRO M3, cleared the cache and everything related to playback, did 'Render in Place,' and even started a new project with the renders. I already formatted the computer, went back to DaVinci 18 and then 19. Still, when it's time to render, it shows 'MEDIA OFFLINE.'
What's odd is that sometimes when I try again, the error happens with different files.
I NEED HELP, I'M DESPERATE.
What could it be? Could it be my computer? Because I have a friend with the same computer, and he doesn't have this issue.
I am really sorry to hear you are having an issue. I see you have the studio version, so it should not be an issue with that.
I am not sure the exact issue, but can only ask a few questions to see if something might help. Have you tried removing the clips from DaVinci Resolve and then bringing them back in again?
Have you tried different render settings in the export page?
Are there any effects in on or above the clips?
still dosent work in PC dude...🤧
Sorry to see you are still having trouble. There are many other reasons this might be an issue. I have made a more recent tutorial which go over 7 other possibilities. You can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/tgF5bViUVdk/видео.html
I can also try to help you with the issue you are having... Are you using the Studio version? Do you know what video codec the clip that you are having is? Is it from a cell phone?
@@chadmullins7553 no im using the free version...and yes the clips are recorded from my cellphone...
everyone is explaining the same thing...did all that not helping
@@thebantulakis8377 sorry to hear you’re having troubles. It sounds like you’re having some other kind of issue.
If you want to explain your situation I will see what I can do to help. Also, can you check and verify where all of the media is that you want to relink?
not working
Sorry to hear that! This happens to be the most common issue. However, there have been several other things happening recently so I will be making more tutorials on the other things that might be happening.
dont like this
Sorry to hear that... I do have another tutorial which goes over quite a few other reasons the media might be offline.
