Doctors and Mental Health

  • There are two main reasons doctors have some of the highest rates of depression and suicide out of any profession.
First, the stigma surrounding mental health in the field of medicine starts early in medical training. The immense pressure on premeds and medical students to perform well can lead to feelings of impostor syndrome, anxiety, depression, and more serious health concerns.
The competitive nature often encouraged in the application process and throughout med school make students less likely to speak about their perceived weaknesses. And this attitude is often carried forward into their career.
Secondly, physicians in training often don’t seek help for mental illness for fear it will impact their ability to gain licensure. While technically against the law, there’s a gray area that discourages physicians from seeking help for mental illness.
The irony is that deterring doctors from seeking mental health treatment ultimately puts patients at risk, as physicians who are forced to hide their struggles are more likely to make medical errors or suffer from burnout.
Unfortunately, doctors are less likely to seek mental health treatment than the general population. Preventive measures and addressing mental health concerns at their first sign is how we can maintain the safety and wellness of doctors and patients alike.
