I hate this mike and kobe discussion because nobody ever talks about how they do have completely different games outside of the post, fades, etc.. the way they put the ball on the floor and broke down defenses was way different and looked nothing alike. Yes kobe got a lot from Mj AND HAKEEM but he has a game of his own that doesn’t look like theirs
I want to preface by saying that IMO Jordan Lebron and Kobe are the 3 best players to ever play and as long as your number 1 is one of those players I won’t ever argue with you because they have different cases for the GOAT title. If I had to pick 1 it’d be jordan based off of skill, talent, impact on winning, impact on the game, etc.. I think has the best overall resume. Jordan’s claim is that he has the best peak ever. Kobe’s would be that he’s the most skilled and won during the most competitive era of the league and most disadvantageous era for his style of play. Lebron’s is that nobody was as good as he was/is for as as long as he was. Basically longevity. BUT this is how I see Jordan vs Kobe game wise: Finishing: Jordan not really that close (Kobe was a great finisher but jordan was like no other) Mid range shot: Kobe(could go either way), I think kobe played in an era where was more difficult to shoot a lot of mid range shots at a high clip and played against tougher defenses in general.(not mad if someone says jordan) 3PT Shot: Kobe, this isn’t close. Jordan was never guarded the Kobe was at the 3 point line and he never really shot enough of them for this to be an argument. Going strictly off of 3pt percentage would be dumb but I’m sure most will. Post scoring: Edge to Kobe, I think Kobe was checked by better defenders both in the post and perimeter while again not having as much to operate as Jordan did give the defenses allowed in Kobe’s era. Kobe took from Jordan and mixed it with Hakeem’s post game. Overall playmaking: Jordan, the edge comes with the fact that he was more of a threat coming downhill and in transition than kobe but they are similar in other aspects. (Will further break down playmaking) Passing out of the post: Jordan, both great at it for guards but I’d edge jordan because he was better at finding open guys and cutters from the post than kobe( again both were great at it especially for guards). Passing out of pick n roll: Kobe, granted we didn’t see Jordan run it as much but I think Kobe is one of the best 2 guards at pick n roll or 2 man games with bigs. Yes what he did with Shaq was great but what really solidified this for me was the years with Pau, LO, Bynum, Dwight etc.. it didn’t matter how athletic a big was Kobe was good at dishing it to them and finding open guys on the perimeter. Scoring in transition: Jordan fasho, not close. Perimeter Defense: Kobe, So I think Kobe while he played in an era where they didn’t always have to check 1 vs 1.. he took it upon himself to do so A LOT I’ve seen Kobe check a wider variety of talent than Jordan on the perimeter even small guards which jordan struggled with. AI, Westbrook, Wade, Mac, Melo, Kyrie, Dame, etc.. the talent from 1-3 in 00-13 is just different. Off ball Defense: Jordan, similar to Kobe in the way that they gambled A LOT off ball and would get caught ball watching jordan was much more successful at jumping passing lanes, helping backside, getting blocks, rebounding etc..Kobe would lock in but sometimes he got caught lacking every now and then.
Jordan clamped rod Strickland in the 97 playoffs not sure where he struggled guarding smaller guys consistently like yeah I can find footage of Jordan getting cooked but Gilbert dropped 60 on Kobe and Jeremy Lin cooker him.
Ox speaking facts about kids not hooping anymore. I’m only 27 and I remember when I was 12-18 it was always a bunch of us trying to hoop with the older guys now in days whenever I do get the chance to hoop it’s never as many kids as it was back in the day fr.
Kobe is Jordan lite. Shot with less efficiency, wasn’t as much of a freak athlete (people who say Kobe was not athletic are crazy) and had terrible shot selection. It’s a miracle he shot 44% considering the shots he took, which is a testament to how good he was, but I feel like he left a lot of meat on the bone that Jordan didn’t. Love Kobe and he’s a top 10 player, but he’s at 5-7 for me.
Jordan played in the era of illegal defense which forces the floor to be spaced. And Kobe was barely less efficient. MJ’s career TS% is 56.9/57 while Kobe is at 55

Secondly, I also think what Gil said was correct, which is why when I hear people say Kobe copied MJ, it's different because number 8 Kobe never played like a young MJ, but number 24 Kobe is where you see the similarities to 96-98 MJ. But even with that, I would say Kobe was more skilled.
I just realized Kobe is known for dunking viciously on Ben Wallace and Dwight Howard who are at least X3 Defensive player of the year winners…he also dunked on Duncan, the Great Wall of China, and Hakeem (but it didn’t count) so really Kobe dunked on all the big men of his era. Not mention his handles, footwork, and range was better than MJ. Yeah Kobe actually was more skilled, just not considered better, but his comp was more crazy.
@@Suge8263 he dunked on Yao & Dwight who are better rim protectors than KG. He blew pass KG then did a reverse dunk on him and the center. Let’s not get into semantics
Hes still not a better finisher in the paint than jordan... not even that close actually. Its a different level for jordan even as good as kobe was. Just more powerful. Considerably More athletic. Ability to palm the ball. Just different to kobe.
What's funny is MJ averaged 30 over 8 years, 37 first year, and 35 the second year. I don't doubt he could average 40 for a few seasons but not a career average.
I would also challenge what the guy said in regard to film study and although there is more technology I don't buy that coaching is necessarily better. I would make the argument that today's copy each even toward their detriment. As a former coach I can identify hundreds of examples of this from mismatch recognition, to simple defensive strategies that don't align with great defenses or properly utilize great defenders.

For Kobe to have a GOAT case, His offensive resume/impact would need to be in the Magic/Nash conversation because he was not a strong positive defender in his best seasons. He's nowhere close to that level of impact. Kobe Bryant is closer to Jokic as an offensive player than he is Magic/LeBron. Kobe’s would be that he’s the most skilled and won during the most competitive era of the league and most disadvantageous era for his style of play. Lebron’s is that nobody was as good as he was/is for as as long as he was. Basically longevity.
BUT this is how I see Jordan vs Kobe game wise:
Finishing: Jordan not really that close (Kobe was a great finisher but jordan was like no other)
Mid range shot: Kobe(could go either way), I think kobe played in an era where was more difficult to shoot a lot of mid range shots at a high clip and played against tougher defenses in general.(not mad if someone says jordan)
3PT Shot: Kobe, this isn’t close.
(Will further break down playmaking)
Passing out of the post: Jordan, both great at it for guards but I’d edge jordan because he was better at finding open guys and cutters from the post than kobe( again both were great at it especially for guards).
MJ’s career TS% is 56.9/57 while Kobe is at 55
there is no middle with kobe.. either people disrespect him or they overrate the fuck out of him.
Loved this episode . The vibe was nice 💪🏽👍

Kobe could potentially have a good argument over everybody not named MJ.

Here are the players ordered by their best 5-year average Relative Offensive Ratings (Rel ORtg), along with the years used for each player's peak:
Magic Johnson: 6.92 (1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1985)

Michael Jordan: 5.88 (1993, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1992)
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: 5.28 (1974, 1977, 1975, 1976, 1980)
