Almost hidden and unnoticed by people, Mysuru has four Dhobi Ghats where families of washer men try to sustain themselves by washing and ironing clothes from dawn to dusk. Here is the documentary series of the washermen ( Madiwala community) of Mysuru, their lifestyle, problems and the constant sense of social discrimination the community face in the society.

Once upon a time we used to be so dependent on the dhobi to have our bedsheets , towels washed, sun dried and ironed to perfection.
Such a pleasure it was to receive clean , beautufully ironed clothes, faintly smelling of grass on which they were spread out to be dried in the sun after they have been washed with such vigour on the stone blocks .
No washing machine or present day laundry can match the excellence of these wonderful dhobis.
In fact, today, if you give it to a laundry, you are charged a princely sum, and the clothes come back with the embedded dirt and stains still there, in fancily packed plastic covers.
