    Man Father Kalistos had such tremendous and long-lasting influence. Fascinating

      I'm unsure how you gathered this idea from Fr.Seraphim merely referencing a work authored by Timothy Ware (Fr.Kallistos).

      Because this is an old audio and Ware is referenced in it.

      @TheMeaningOfWorship I suppose that I'm having difficulty seeing the "tremendous influence" in Father Seraphim's (what appears to my mind to be) mere reference of a work written by [now] bishop Kallistos: It seems accurate to state that bishop Kallistos has had a tremendous influence here in the west and especially as regards Western converts (One would be hard pressed to deny this). However, I don't gather any such hint of his influence being at all present in Father Seraphim Rose; the age of the video (which is not at all "old" even by naive standards) is enough to see the longevity of bishop Kallistos' academic presence and the fact his work made it into Fr Seraphim Rose's hands, and was referenced by him, is an attestation to Kallistos' general popularity (and also his treatment of unique topics). It's also worth noting that during this time period (that of the original audio), Kallistos was much less involved and influenced by ecumenist agendas and affiliations, unlike today; As it concerns this latter allusion, a synopsis of the old and new editions of his highly-praised work "The Orthodox Church" may change one's mind if doubt looms therein.

    in making the sign of the cross because of some appearance, should it be done towards oneself, or towards the appearance? or both?

      Both, but usually when the great saints would do it they would make the sign of the cross over the apparition.

    In Fr Rose's translation of Fr Pomazansky's Pravoslavnoye Dogmaticheskoye Bogoslaviye, is says that "in the prayers for those being married the second time, forgiveness is asked for the sin if a second marriage". Does the Orthodox Church carry out marriages of divorced people believing that such a marriage is a sin? Is that not giving a blessing to sin and besmirching the sacrament of marriage?

      This is something called oikonomia, and (like all true oikonomias) it's salvific.

    • @Lancia444
      @Lancia444 4 года назад +7

      oikonomia, or economia - which is the understanding of the weakness of man, and God's mercy for us.
      It is not a rule, and if the spiritual father believes that a second marriage in a person's case is sinful - he can deny it.
      Basic "rule" is divorce is allowed due to infidelity (or extreme persecution/domestic violence can be considered equally as infidelity) - and therefore a second marriage may be allowed.

      @@Lancia444 Yes, God's Economy is dispensed in conjunction with His Mercy, whereby He'll allow the "breaking" of established rules in certain unfortunate cases. It's not to be treated as a rule to abuse, but as a sign of God's love and forbearance with us.
