  • This 1975 Yamaha RD250 had been sitting since 1989..As long as I've been alive lol! It didn't take much to get this beast up and running, also now riding. I've definitely fallen in love with the RD's platform, from engine & transmission package to frame design, these things are pretty amazing not to mention they are big bike slayers. More to come on this and the rest of the collection in the future so be sure to sub for more content like this!

I'm glad I found this video! I have a 74 that hasn't been on the road since 78' . I needed some inspiration to get back working on mine.

My first street bike at 16 was a blue RD250, not a model you see much on.
Love it, love the sound, it brought back some memories.
    Thanks,

Your best bet is the Vape CDI ignition. Everyone who's anyone with an RD runs these ignitions. Set it, forget it, and enjoy a real stator ignition.

Do they work on the 200s as well?

I’m not too sure if the rd200s have the same cam style ignition but I believe if it does Yambits website would have it listed as an option. ✌️

Run the Vape on my '75 RD350B and '77 RD400. Best decision I ever made. Strong spark at the right time, every time across the entire RPM curve. Starts easier, more power, better combustion, less smoke. No longer have to rely on 40+ year old stock ignitions to get me home. For the everyday rider like me it's awesome.

I had 2 or 3 of these back in the early 1980s. They were quick but a death trap. It was common for them to suddenly seize up at speed.

The YDS7 seems to have YR5 barrels on it . Have you measured the bore ? 350cc barrels generally have two extra wider cooling fins at the top of the barrels.

Funny I was just talking about 350 barrels for it yesterday! I haven't had time to look into the YDS7 much yet but actually just got back to working on it. Will definitely look into that, Appreciate the info!

I worked at a high volume Yamaha dealer in the 70s and got to pre-delivery service a lot of RD350s and 250s Every once in awhile I’d service and test ride a 250 that was just as fast as a 350 on my short test ride. Maybe one in 10 or so would just feel really crisp, responsive and a better ride than a 350. I never figured out a reason but it might have been a combination of cylinder sleeve alignment and piston clearance or who knows but those 250s were nice. Too bad we didn’t get the later 1976 through 79 250s that Europe and Canada got with the later style cylinders, electronic ignition and RD400 chassis improvements.

That’s awesome! I can’t imagine what it would’ve been like working at a moto dealership in the 70s, I’m sure it was like a little slice of heaven most days for a two stroke enthusiast lol.

@@WreckedRevivalIt was fun and a lot of work as some days we would sell 15 or more bikes a day in the early 70s. Lots of crash damage work to go along with regular service too but I think it was a golden age of motorcycling in the US. I bought a DS7 second hand, modified it and went racing in WERA with some success so that bike has a sweet spot in my heart. 🏁

Once I´ve asked JL ( Jim Lomas ) if their pipes fixe on the RD250 too ( respectively are too big because made for the RD 350 ), but still waiting for response. Yamaha once made special exhausts for their TD 250 Racing machine, but they are not anymore available.
