    Do you think Calcium Reactors are EASY to use?

    • @LightSearch

      I got one 2 weeks ago and today I am testing what it does with the CO2 shut off. I had the tank balanced with 30 bubbles per minute and 225 ml of effluent. With this much water going through, I suspect the CO2 isn't doing much.

    Best calcium reactor for a 6.5 gallon?

  • @leducphu2310
    @leducphu2310 6 месяцев назад

    It operates based on a simple chemical equation: CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O -> Ca(HCO3)2

    I hate dosing. Granted the dosing pumps are much better these days. But the popular calcium reactor is the best way to go in my experience. Not to mention adding dead coral skeletons back into your system.

    So you don’t need both a calcium reactor and dosing pumps, or at least a dosing pump for calcium?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад

      A calcium reactor replaces the need for two part dosing/dosing pumps. That said, it's becoming more and more common to use a continuous duty dosing pump as a calcium reactor feed pump. This is just a single head dosing pump that can run at a specific ml/min rate 24/7, providing stable calcium and alkalinity to the aquarium.

      @@BRStv yes they do, but when you have been running standard 2 part for so long a calcium reactor seems a bit daunting! Maybe a episode of changing a dose run system over to a calcium reactor getting everything changed over and running might be a good way to show how easy it is or not :)

    Can corals live with out a calcium reactor ? Tnx

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад +1

      A calcium reactor isn't a requirement to keep corals, but you'll need some way to maintain your tank's calcium and alkalinity levels to support coral growth long term. Ignoring calcium reactors, you could consider using two part, kalkwasser, or even a one-part product like All-For-Reef.

    So can I just plug my carbondoser directly into my apex to have that turn it on and off to accommodate my ph in the reactor?

    • @jpruitt546
      @jpruitt546 5 лет назад +1

      ElectronicSnap
      Yes but that defeats the purpose of buying the carbon doser.
      Just buy the tunze with solenoid and hook it up to the apex. Will save you quite a bit of money and accomplish the same thing.
      But since you already have the carbon doser yes you can.

    • @BRStv

    • @jpruitt546
      @jpruitt546 5 лет назад

      ElectronicSnap
      What is your ph that you want it to run at?
      Here is an example.
      Fallback Off
      If PH < 6.2 Then Off
      If PH > 6.7 Then On
      Use this on the plug where you plug the carbon doser in.

    On the Red Sea Reefer 525 XL , moderate amount SPS and LPS, using Korallin Cal Reactor model 1502 , with Electronic Carbon Doser, using Two Little Fishes Reborn , Large size media . unit preforms nicely on Calcium , high 450 range , problem is ALK -- goes way high 13dkh ,PH in the effluent 6.5 -no matter how i adjust effluent or adjust bubble size dkh stays high , on first thought - i don't have enough corals to uptake alk , - Not currently using PH controller, a friend suggested to dial in better and pull water from reactor not push , not sure about that, . to remedy the situation , i just turn it off till the alk comes down , is there a better way to stabilize Alk ,
    Your thoughts , please help.

      Matt you need to reduce the effluent coming out of the reactor, also what salt are you using , if your already using say Red Sea pro salt you will already have a high kh, check the base kh in the salt your using before you start increasing it with the calcium reactor. You could also raise the ph in reactor to 6.7 to reduce the kh of the effluent . Decreasing the drip rate will also mean less kh added if you also increase the ph in the reactorYou then test again after a good few hoursI .If
      your salt is say 8.0 kh you might not be getting a large enough uptake by your corals so the kh will keep increasing. Watch the videos by BRS on calcium reactors and how to balance the kh and calcium effluent for your individual needs. Calcium and alkalinity are linked. Check your kh regularly . I check mine daily keep mine around 8.5 with calcium reactor and my calcium is 420-440.
      Pete

      @@petesreef1891 Wow , thanks Pete , yes i am using Red Sea Pro , almost down to the last of the bucket , to expensive anyway , what salt do you use ? or could you recommend ? is Fritz good ?
      Yes that was good info , i will raise PH effluent and decrease drip rate , get a few more corals too.Thanks for the tip on videos ,

      I use tropic Marin pro not the probiotic one kh I think is about 7.7 . It dissolves really easily no residue after couple of hours my salinity is 1.025 corals do well . Just regularly check kh of tank swings in alkalinity are really bad for corals. Try and keep it between 8 and 9 till you get a handle on the calcium reactor 👍
