    Great job, some good points I wanna make about you and this hunt. A lot of upcoming hunters think that the newest gear or the fanciest equipment is what makes you a hunt and that is far from the truth. You use a simple bow you only had four arrows, your hunting clothes are not expensive and on your first ny public land hunt you killed your first buck. This is what hunting is all about.

    • @HigherElevations
      @HigherElevations  3 года назад +4

      Exactly. I was still killing deer with it year after year... I bought that bow second hand 22 years ago for $200. Retired her last season due to things breaking down and becoming unsafe. This is the last deer I shot with it.

    I'm impressed. An excellent video full of respect! Something that is rare amongst young people today. I'm sure your parents are very proud of you. It takes a lot of skill to harvest what looked like a two and a half year old buck on the ground with archery gear. I wish you the best and many more years of hunting success! 👍

    I live and hunt in central New York and my daughter in-law grew up in Pleasantville. Before her family relocated to Florida I always wondered how much public lands I passed on the way down and back that I passed. We went down for brunch one time and headed back home late afternoon in September and was driving on rt. 6 the west side of Bear mt. Bridge and one of the biggest whitetails I have ever seen crossed in front of us.. I’m mean he was pushing to make the low end of book.

    • @HigherElevations
      @HigherElevations  4 года назад +2

      Thats awesome! Sound like you were over by Harriman State Park which is a huge chunk of public land but doesn't allow hunting :( ... which is why bucks can get so big over there. I've seen a monster over there while hiking.

    • @cristianespinal9917
      @cristianespinal9917 3 года назад +1

      Yea, that's the issue. Lots of public land down in the southern parts of the state either don't allow or heavily restrict hunting.

    I know your feelings exactly. I waited two years after letting buck after buck walk... waiting on the right one. Times I felt impatient, angry, sorry for myself, and kicking myself for letting bucks walk. When you are on public land and scout and put the work in and nothing pays out for a long time, it turns into a mind game. Then that hunt comes together and you are able to harvest a buck you waited and worked so hard on the feelings are overwhelming and indescribable. We just have to give thanks to God. That was an awesome hunt and awesome buck! I don’t know you, but I am happy for you. Congratulations!

      Check maps and look for public land. The OnX Hunt app is great for that if you don't have it already. I would be wary of hunting the hudson valley areas because there was a major outbreak of EHD this fall that wiped out thousands of deer. (Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, Ulster). Other than that you should have no problem finding deer no matter where you go. Good Luck!

      Most state forests allow hunting. Look in your area on google maps or try using the app OnX (hunting app) and look for state / public land. Then research those chunks to see what the rules and regulations are for hunting, if any... I had to get a free permit for the woods I hunt, which is archery only.

    Beautiful hunt. From the looks of the forest and terrain with dogs walkers, traffic etc, I'd guess you were hunting a multiple use area/ state land in southeastern NY???

      Yeah that's correct. You'd think the deer would be deep in the forest but most of the sign is near roads and houses were there is more different types of vegetation and cover.
