I could be wrong but the sheath looks like its set up to strap to your leg as a dive knife.
Potential, but they should have included straps and a dangle like cold steel for the belt.
I believe you're probably right. They came out with a dive knife that, aside from the blade shape (blunt tip) at the same time, and looks to use the same sheath.
think they should simply make kydex for these, instead of investing on a new mold for a silly sheath😢
I pre-ordered mine and it’s my first Magnacut. I’m crazy about the steel and conceptually the sheath … I want a secure hold. For the price, and the edge it takes, it’s a great blade blank. I’m going to put fatter scales on it so it fits my hand better. While I’m at it make a kydex sheath. I was a little frustrated with the misalignment between scales and tang but realized it is an opportunity for growth. Thanks for a good review
I must admit I was thinking about picking up this blade knowing that I’d have to make my own sheath and a micarta handle, but the grind puts it over the edge for me. Thanks for saving me some money Aron!
I put a convex edge on it with 180 grit diamond plate then worked up. Didn't take too long. Just ground it at as shallow of an angle as possible. Cuts like a champ now.
@@JohnFrumFromAmericaafter paying 130 bucks.... No thanks
@@truthhurts2149 the bigger issue is it's not very corrosion resistant about the same as8cr14mov as I think they did a high temperature temper which causes small chrome carbides to form so the chrome is not contributing to corrosion resistance. I do not recommend
Nice review, all true! But I still want one. I guess we magnacut lovers need to be patient in one year the market is going to be full of alternatives for all price ranges.
I can't wait to see a review of the Demko Free Reign!
Coming soon!!
To me it's a pack knife which means to me an emergeny us knife only not an everyday carry it does not need to be super steel . As to the sheath you nailed it's an after thought and needs a lot of help .As to my pack kinfe it's an old butcher knife that dad gave me for an emergency .when I was 8 or 9 years old I'm now 81 and it's still there and it has never been used for anything other than to oil every year and put back for an emergency. Happy Trails
Seems clear to me that the OKC has designed a decent dive knife (hard to find). The double strap is used for rubber straps to lash to a leg or arm. The retention system is for access with neoprene gloves on. And I would challenge any of the other knives mentioned to spend a couple hours underwater and the rest of the day bluefishing on the boat here in NE and see how they hold up to a saltwater atmosphere
G'day mate, great point, I'm right on the briny here, even the air gets to non- stain ... less steel, lol. I'm a regular land based fisho, (and certainly no stranger to boating), though I've only ever been a snorkeler.
This one's too small for diving IMO, but you are so right, definitely hard to find a good'n, say @ 6 inches for me, .... there used to be plenty back in the day, mostly in AUS-8, if memory serves.
I'm currently using a Problue Talon in Titanium, excellent as a bait knife, but it's too small too for diving IMO, I reckon you need something with a bit of prybar about it for diving and not simply the "oyster; type designs out there........ alas we take what we can get, lets hope magnacut makes its way proper into the blue water scene. Cheers Duke.
Dive knife, LMAO
Great selection, Aaron! I have several of those knives (earlier variations) and love them all!
Lack of a clip is not really a minus, though. More pocket knives have been lost due to pulling other objects out of the pocket and accidentally and unknowingly lifting the knife out and not finding out about it until its too late ! Keep 'em deep in the pocket, guys. No need to quick-draw a pocket knife.
Aaron, Demko Free Reign. Please 😊
Coming soon
Love my Ontario’s but hell no on this one. Just got back from the Adirondacks upstate New York Boondocking. My Gerber principal is all in for me. In 420. Thanks Aaron for the review
Wow, that design team was out to lunch on this one. It gives the vibe of someone who has never used a knife design. Especially the sheath
A great performance. Thank you very much. The knife sheath can be well attached to the leg with straps. I myself usually do not wear knives on the belt. So for me everything OK. I like the knife very much. I have ordered one. The cutting edge I will profile. By the way, Dawson Knives has also only hardened the Magnacut to 61 RC. North Arm Knives (Canada) also. Both knives I own from the companies mentioned hold their sharpness pretty well, in my opinion. Since I have way too many knives anyway, this one won't get used much. But I just love this Mora like design and color.
According to the guy who developed the MagnaCut steel, the ultimate HRC for MagnaCut is 61.5
I suspect that the reason for the two slots on the sheath is for molle/pals webbing. See the Gerber Strongarm.
Ya sad there are no attachments
Thanks for sharing your insights!
Depends on the heat treatment
price point is great for this design knife and steel. but the sheath is so bad imo.
Nice presentation highlighting a good steel value for your subscribers!!! GOOD JOB!
I get what you say in the classic sense of a choil, but the handle blade has a cut out or choil big enough for your finger to grip right up to the actual cutting edge of the blade . To me this is a great thing.
It's a weird thing to say about a knife made from THE most premium steel out there, but it's a fixer-upper. Even as aproject knife though, it may be worth it. If I can create the right solutions for the problems, I get a knife that has top-tier steel, ideal for my environment, with a sheath that is super solid with great retention. I think I'll get me one.
Nice!!
Yep.
G'day Charles, kinda like ....... buy the worst house in the best street ; ) Cheers Duke.
@@eyeofthetiger4184 I'm a carpenter by trade. Great analogy!
@@eyeofthetiger4184 Perfect, Duke!
I think the Esee 3 S35vn would give the Ontario a run for the money . The SPL might have a slight advantage in edge retention but that’s about it .
Magnacut's corrosion resistance is definitely better than S35VN. LC200N and IIRC, Vanex are the only steels with better corrosion resistance, and neither hold a candle to Magnacut in toughness and edge retention. Pick the steel based on your priorities and use case, and, of course, budget.
@@johnsanford3596Magnacut corrosion resistance is strictly correlated to the HT tho. Bark rivers MC acts like A2 from multiple tests (and it even created the debate if Mike Stewart was again ripping off people by mislabelling steels with subpar one) because of the HT, which brings the HRC to 60/61. Under 63 HRC Magnacut is not stain resistant as it should be as far as Larrin says (its creator).
63 to 64 HRC is optimal. Under that is subpar.
Ontario is 60/61.
Demko 62/62.5.
UG is 64/65.
BRKT is 60/61.
You pay for what you get, outside bark rivers, then you just get ripped off.
A good s35vn (like ESEE) is way superior to a subpar MC like Ontario and BRKT.
A good MC (like UG, Demko, custom) is miles better than s35vn.
@@johnsanford3596LC200n is one of my favorite steels. It’s pretty tough, virtually rust proof, and has similar edge retention similar to vg10.
I already have a good magnacut small fixed blade so I wouldn't buy it personally. But I'm okay with that sheath. I'd just make my own leather sheath, and enjoy having the option to be able to use that one for snorkeling/diving as that pretty much looks like what it's made for in mind.
Nice coverage! This blade is definitely comparable to the ESEE S35 lineup.
Shoes look like half cabs .. best skate shoe type as enough ankle protection with full light footed flexibility.
Good review. Kind of reminds me of the original Essee 4. At roughly the same price point you're getting a project knife with much better steel but a crappy sheath. There's always going to be trade offs, but a Magnacut blade for less than $150 is worth consideration. Thanks.
I think they lower the rockwell on a dedicated hunting pack knife because its contact with bone.
Could be, and again 60-63 is still good and we are all discovering the effects, capabilities, and limitations of MagnaCut together. I am just pointing out that I have a blade with 63-64HRC that performs beautifully in this similar size and it would have been nice to have the HRC a little tighter and higher on a small blade like this.
Nope... but another great honest review! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Great video! Although, like you, I don't care for the choil normally on a knife this size, this looks like it would make a great small field chef's knife for food prep because of the choil which is something that I have been looking for for a long time. Do you think you could do another video showing it in use in camp chopping veg and meat for a meal?
love the knife and the price of that magnacut, and i love the small size of the sheath. if the attachment point was a plastic hook like some moraknives have, or some way to attach regular belt clips onto it i'd buy that knife in a heartbeat.
If recommend, if you did still want it, to simply run some paracord, run it through and then secure it to a quality caribeaner! I've done so to a few more basic Mora sheaths, and not only does it dangle nicely, it also lets you just Clip it to your pants or pocket if you lack a belt that day. I've also clipped it to sweat pants for doing chores at home.
With a locking Caribeaner, you can also just use it like a metal belt loop and run your belt through it
With the name pack knife i would say the sheath is intended to go on pack straps and waist belts ON the pack, I doubt its actually intended for regular belt carry, let's hope the v2 will be better lol. They could have something here if it was done properly, perhaps some newer models are in the works that we're not aware of. I'll be waiting but thanks for showing!
I think it's a dive knife sheath for strapping to a leg. I lashed a tech lock belt loop to drop it. It works pretty well.
@@JohnFrumFromAmerica it definitely gave me dive knife vibes too lol but only in the sheath
I really like the blade even with its imperfections, but I'm not a fan of orange scales and the sheath is pretty much hot garbage. The good price isn't enough to make me purchase it in this iteration.
_It's a shame when you even have to mention the heat-treat issues!_
_If these companies are not going to be hitting that magical HRC... its like.. why even use Magnacut at all._ _=(_
Could be, and again 60-63 is still good and we are all discovering the effects, capabilities, and limitations of MagnaCut together. I am just pointing out that I have a blade with 63-64HRC that performs beautifully in this similar size and it would have been nice to have the HRC a little tighter and higher on a small blade like this.
Honestly, My experiance over the years has taught me that cheap versions of "supoer steels" do not exhibit all the great properties of the steel due to less intensive heat treat.
Like Benchmade 3v puuko, probably Cold Steels also. Was it Survive! that stopped Magnacut due to consistency issues with the steel? Survive! is a higher spec company, if they had trouble I find it hard to believe a less intense company is mass producing them with all the attributes expected in a Magnacut knife. I could be wrong, I just have doubts heat treat wise and think that quite often its better to go with a companies well respected lesser steel with a good heat treat is a better tool than one with the latest greatest. Its great marketing, I just wonder how well heat treated it was.
Hello, a great video. Thanks 👍.
I like the knife. Who builds the knife. Is it Case? Certainly not OKC???
I reprofiled the blade with the coarsest DMT grinding plate. It was really quick and easy. It is a major improvement.
The knife fits in an old Bark River sheath.
I really don't understand some knife companies. They can make a great knife , A fixed blade.. And drop the ball on the sheath. Makes no sense.
G'day Aaron, I do like where they're going with the basic design, though as you've shown, it sure aint perfect.
Yes the sheath is limited, surely its specifically designed for scout, perhaps pack strap, carry, ..... but in the absence of tech lock or some such, a couple of small HD nylon straps isn't much to ask.
I quite like the retention clip set up, ..... assuming it doesn't wear out. Ironic the locking groove appears on both sides, even though it's not reversable, ..... yet the symmetry of the grind .......... where it does matter ......................
Must say, I am coming to the conclusion, the only thing I "really" like about magnacut is it's corrosion resistance, sure extra edge retention is always appreciated, though when it does come time to sharpen/hone, I wouldn't like to be doing it in the middle of nowhere. I'm think'n if you're gonna have it at all, it'd be better for EDC ...... and no reason why this one couldn't fit that bill ...... in a discrete color anyway ; ) Cheers Duke.
Always appreciate it Duke! Great critiques
Magnacut is great for people who absolutely hate to take care of and to maintain their blade!
Better get two, so you can send in one for sharpening and have the other one to use meanwhile!
Great video!!!
This is a good example of “you get what you pay for”. Being American made, magnacut for just above 100$? You see exactly where the corners were cut because corners HAD to be cut. The lack of refinement in the grind, lack of refinement in the fit and finish, the thick wonky grind.. I was worried about the heat treat (that’s what Twosun does to make things more accessible is make the steels softer for easier grinding to cut cost), 60-64 is the appropriate range w/ 62.5 being the “optimal” balance point for toughness generally. For a pack knife like this though that caters more towards slicing and cutting than batonning or chopping, id want it higher. Just like you said. 62-64 would be better, if it’s hanging lower than 62. Again, cutting corners. It’ll do its job, you just need to throw more elbow grease into the correcting of the cost cutting details. The sheath is another example of cost cutting. That wouldn’t work for me, that would be forced to go on retainer and compression straps on my pack, not my belts. The sheath is definitely cheap.
Ya which there was better attention to detail.
UPDATE I did corrosion testing an my knife failed with corrosion resistance about the same as 8cr14mov I think they tempered at to high a temperature and have removed chrome from solution to form small chrome carbides reducing corrosion restiance on my knife:
This is my thoughts The SPL pack knife is overall a great value purchase with some areas of improvement. The biggest concern is the grind is very thick and steep angle meaning that out of the box you are not getting any benifits from the high performance steel. If you have the capability to reprofile it to a convex you can get a very high performing knife. For me this is a feature rather than a bug as this is my favourite type of edge giving strength and cutting ability. The sheath has been talked about by others. It is well made but not the best design. I strapped a teck lock type belt clip to it to drop it a bit as it sits a bit high otherwise. The only other downside is I think they could have dropped a bit of weight out of the tang by cutting some holes. In summary it is a very good value knife with a great utilitarian design. However it does need some work to bring out it's full potential.
Totally like many OKC blades
Perhaps we will see an upgrade finally to the RAT 1 in Magnacut. One can only hope.
A rat 1 with a better lock and blade steel would be what causes me to convert over to a rat 1.
@@DevDog67 Over 20 years and the liner lock has never failed me. Bearing would be nice though.
I chopped down a 3 inch diameter tree with a Rat One out of total necessity. The liner lock is still as good as the day I bought it. Although a Magnacut cross bar lock version 😊😊!
I think the reason for the lower hardness is because it was initially designed as a dive knife which could be used for prying as stuff like that and this pack knife was more of an afterthought, it didn't even have a lanyard hole when they announced it.
Sure I am just saying the knife could have been even 61-62 and it would have been fine. A lot of it was just the large gap and how low it was for a small knife
@@gideonstactical Yea, it's not a very good knife but I think it will be very popular cause it has magnacut in the name and it is made by a popular brand.
I think a lot of budget knifes have that off center grind. I've seen it on a buck vantage and many svord knives. Looks like the sheath is more for a Mollie system than belts so the name seems spot on.
Looks like a great knife but I think I'll stick with my RAT-3 due to it's slightly smaller size.
I own a few Ontario knives but I never saw them as high quality knives. They are decent for a sub-$100 price for those who can't see themselves spending $150-$200 for a knife. The design is nice for a day hiker knife, but I hate the sheath.
I cant imagine buying this over my white river backpacker at a similar price.
How easy or hard is magma it to sharpen in the woods?
Ill wait for veraion 2 to come out
Unfortunately I am stuck with frog flippers for feet, so I’m limited in shoe selection.😢
I think I recommend hardness for magnacut is 62 so that range is probably ok. But the edge is too thick and sharpening is very rough.
This is kind of what Benchmade did with the Benchmade Puukko with 3V steel a few years ago but Benchmade did it better all around.
i grabbed one. think it is a good value for the price. i hate the sheath hoops but i pocket carry so not too big of a deal. I knew I'd have to reprofile it before i bought it. ontario is known for their poor from factory grinds.
If they had made the scales a bit thicker- I think this would have been a bigger win.
Great work dude.😄😄
Thanks 😁
While they have raised their prices since, i paid right around $125-130 for my 3V benchmade 200 puuko and I think i could confidently say the benchmade would be a much better choice for my intended usage although I cannot say for 100% as I do not yet own this pack knife but it is ordered so i will soon...
Benchmade 3v is so soft its not even funny. Garbage.
@@tacticalcenter8658I'm pretty sure they fixed new models after folks gave them hell for the soft heat treat
i'm not sure what you're using to sharpen but magnacut isn't really that bad at least in my experience... I reprofiled my lionsteel m4 in magnacut and it wasn't any more difficult than say s35vn using diamond stones.
Knives are like footware, find what works for you and what you do. Experts in "tools" are a dime a dozen. Experiment for yourself, and remember "can you afford to lose it? Trust your gut not someone elses!
Listen, I don’t want a bunch of people screaming at me, but what is Magnificat? Is it comparable to anything else? I found D2 knives to do everything I need, so I don’t go very much farther than that.
Could you do a corrosion test on your SPL pack knife. I did one with 3.5% salt water and it rusted really bad. Did some other steels and the SPL magnacut did as bad a 8cr14mov. I think they did a bad heat treatment specifically tempering at high temperatures above 750degF. My test was 8hr spray then wipe clean and spray again. Got a lot of corrosion on the 12th hr.
Yikes! Any I dipped my TJ Overland 63-64 in the gulf and then spent a month 3 month is in Alabama and Florida…no rust.
I had a look at Larrin Thomas video on magnacut heat treatment and he mentioned that high tempering temperature can cause the formation of chrome carbides taking the chrome out of solution significantly reducing corrosion resistance. The only advantage is for the manufacturer is it makes the steel able to withstand higher temperatures meaning it is harder to burn the edge during grinding.
The only thing to dislike is the price. I can get great knives for a lot less and be real happy.
That sheath is a no. They need to pay better attention to fit and finish too. With the right sheath and a tad more attention to detail they could mop the floor with other companies.
Ontario's QC has always left a little to be desired.
Sorry but OKC QC is all over the place. If they fix that, they’d do a lot better. Not just OKC but so many companies just FU the tip grind; Gerber, OKC, Buck, Steel Will, Kabar. I’ve got knives from all of them with wonky tips and uneven grinds.
OKC is always a little soft in their Rockwell for any particular steel.
Ya, if they just fixed these Little issues it be good.
Looks alot like a north arms mallard !
Looks like sizes only to 13. I’m a 15D
Nice background music.
Glad you like it, thanks for watching 👍
I was happy with this knife until I took the scales off. The screws holding then together are only catching about 1 thread! It's like someone sawed off a longer screw and took too many threads off, then decided it was going to hold at least long enough to stay together in the package.. I could not even get one of them to reassemble (not a cross thread issue, it literally is just too darn short). I emailed OKC about this but got no response. Disappointed for sure, as otherwise I was okay with the other issues. I'll obviously be doing some custom scales...
I think the hardness is correct for this use. 60 to 63 means it's around 62 to 61 which is plenty hard for an out door wood knife.
Yes, but not for this steel usually 63-64 is recommended
@@gideonstactical I thought I put a comment on here but it's gone now. I just pointed out that Larrin suggested 61 to 62.5 RC as a balanced target hardness in his article on magnacut. This being a big brand manufacturer I think it's reasonable to be a bit conservative. The user will see a bit more toughness. Small batch knife makers can go harder as the people that seek them out will use the knife accordingly.
No you know nothing about magnacut and hardness. 63-64 is optimal. Go watch the testing. Higher toughness at 63 than below. And especially for a smaller blade like this the higher the better. Don't be ignorant and say things you know nothing about
@@tacticalcenter8658 I just looked at the toughness, hardness chart and it is 17 ft-lb at 60.5 and it drops to 15ft-lb at 63 and 12 ft-lb at 64. So if you aim for 63-64 you run the risk of reducing the toughness a fair bit. Therefore OKCs heat treat to 62 seems appropriate. You do realise there is not going to be a dramatic change from 62 to 63. It's not like 63 is some magic hardness number.
@@JohnFrumFromAmerica Carrothers performance knives has an actual video on testing. So does another channel from Japan. Proof is in the pudding.
I have an Ontario machete, sp53 and a rat 3. I have used the longer ones for yard work for many years and they do hold up. But I was disappointed to hear that now that they are upgrading the steel on some of the knives that they still can’t make a refined knife. They are what they. They make hard use, ugly knives that get out performed by better companies knives.
Thanks Aaron for a good honest review. For the money if you don't mind some of the mod's to remove the warts.
It will be a good project knife
as long you don't have spend
to much on other sheaths handles ect. G.L
does anyone know if they make a lefty sheath? I emailed OKC twice and still no response.
Not to my knowledge
Because it's injection molded they wouldn't have made a left version. Injection molds are expensive
Is "American Made" now a specification? 😄
Totally 💯
When is that free reign going to be released?
Soon
Concept is good, execution is bad, especially the sheath, friction lock with an adjustable clip of some kind to give it carry options.
I’d make a dangler out of it
How dare you disrespect my short esee choils. I love them
Hahah right on. Just not for me.
Look at the huge hardness range they state for magnacut. It’s retarded and reflects a lack of strict heat treatment
Yes even if it had been 62-63 on a small blade would have been totally good.
Ontario and condor knives usually come with poor grinds and thick geometry.
Thanks for the review
don't give money to jokes. Just buy a Joker. Also with all of that bad spots, i m really concerned about the heat treatment and the accuracy of the blade material composition of a Magnacut performance.
You ever heard of zip ties carry any you want
For 125.⁰0 you would think it would be a better knife
Not at all. That steel is reasonable at the price. If they addressed all the concerns it would be 200-250. I like it for that price. Enough that I think I'll pick one up and convex the egde.
$120 is too expensive
They should do what CRKT does, and provide a basic good and a premium good quality version of one design.
Would really boost their reputation and many knife lovers would appreciate and love them even more!
Looks like it is practically stamped or just plasma cut out of thin eighth-inch Magnacut stock, and hardly any grinding... i see this a lot with cheap knives, thin stock and hardly any grinding. It makes for a really shitty knife that can look good from the side but can't cut worth a damn. And they cheaped out by using such thin stock.

Again a very expensive knife for rich guys playing bushcraft bottom in the garden !
So it’s MagnaCut, I’ll stick with my 1095hc! So many imperfections for a $125 knife! Yeah, or lash it right to your submarine
Ontario always be Ontario knife company.. That grind always terrible never ever get close each side.. Look like old man with cockeye grinding with his wobble hand.. I'm done with that's brands, never ever buy anymore with them..
Knife looks okay, sheath 👎.
that sheath is a no go
Nice knife but that orange is gross bro.
Great review. Sadly this doesn’t make me want to buy one. Low HRC and poorly ground blade is probably a deal breaker for me. I would rather pay a little more for a higher quality knife.
It's not low hardness. This is the exact recommended hardness by the designer of the steel for this application. It's run harder that almost every other outdoor knife.
@@JohnFrumFromAmerica Larrin Thomas (creator of MagnaCut) recommends 63-64 for optimal performance so if OKC is coming in at 60-63 then they are on the low end of the range and with their issues with quality control they have unfortunately become known for I don’t have much confidence that they will get that right more often than not. What makes you think they will get the heat treat right when they can’t even get the grind halfway decent?
@@mmiller73 this is from Larrins 2021 article " The 2050-350 heat treatment results in around 61-62.5 Rc and offers balanced properties including good edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance." And this "The recommended heat treatment is 2050°F austenitize and 350°F temper,"
Therefore he is recommending a target hardness around 62 which is pretty hard for an outdoor fixed blade. Seeing as this is an out door fixed blade from a big manufacturer I think it's likely that Larrin would advise OKC that this is a good heat treatment. Also you don't drop that much edge retention and you gain thoughness so it's a tradeoff. I think it's the right call.
To each their own, if it was me I would have a higher tighter HRC like I stated of 63-64 or 62-63 the 60-63 is a big gap on a little blade. Again if it was the Rat 6 size I would not have an issue. It’s just my opinion as I stated.
