    About the game:
    Shadow of the Colossus is a 2005 action-adventure game developed by Japan Studio and Team Ico, and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2. It takes place in a fantasy setting and follows Wander, a young man who enters an isolated and abandoned region of the realm seeking the power to revive a girl named Mono. The player assumes the role of Wander as he embarks on a mission that might entail Mono's resurrection: to locate and destroy the colossi, sixteen massive beings spread across the forbidden land, which the protagonist traverses by horseback and on foot.

    44:09 That’s the reason why I love this game so much! The fact that it doesn’t have music while on horseback, first of all it makes the bosses way more impactful when they do show up, and the world’s atmosphere benefits from not using music, it feels like a real deserted forbidden land. Dark Souls and Bloodborne also used this design choice and it really benefited tgem as well. I only wish Elden Ring didn’t have music in the world for the exact same reason, because that world feels alot more unnatural compared to Shadow of the Colossus and Dark Souls.

    • @graysonwarwick2055
      @graysonwarwick2055 7 месяцев назад +1

      I feel like it's different though because in Elden Ring there is chance and hope for change, most of the endings bar 2 maybe 3 benefit the lands between, and I also feel like there is a lot more life in Elden ring compared to the death and decay of Dark Souls, so maybe that's why they added music, I do agree with your other points though.

    So glad you're absolutely loving this game, genuinely. This isn't a spoiler, but at some point before the final Colossi, you should take a closer look at Wander (the character you play as). You might find some interesting things. Also, if you want to end up doing some kind of "Lore and Chill" for the game, a great place to start is with Nomad Colossus. He is the Vati of Shadow of The Colossus.

      @@matiasgagoIt's my favorite game. I highly recommend you play the PS2 version, then the PS3 HD collection of SOTC and Ico (the also amazing game from the same creator that came out early in the PS2's cycle and is a sequel to SOTC!! Bluepoint also did the PS3HD version and it is amazing in it's own right! I think for a modern gamer to 1st play the PS4 remake is the right order to capture the true wonder. Then, going all the way back to the OG PS2 version and understanding that there literally was nothing like it and how boundary pushing it was for that hardware. Finally, the PS3 HD version which like all of them, is very true to the original, but definitely has it's own vibe. This mainly comes from the changes in lighting and tone, but mechanics, for the most part, have remained the same. It would be great to see you play through Ico since you liked this one so much! It's another classic gem, along with the 3rd part of the trilogy, The Last Guardian! Peace.

    There are some incredibly gorgeous places in this game that serve absolutely no gameplay function. Just an out of the way corner of the world that’s breathtakingly beautiful for you to find. The original was one of my favorite games as a child and it was as visually striking back then. It terms of open worlds it was pretty much this and the early 3D GTA games, and obviously this was much more aesthetically intentional. It did exploration in a way that I’d never seen in a game and compelled me to map every single inch and uncover every single secret there was.
    Journey is another game that I would compare this to; they both prioritize visual splendor and storytelling, and have simple yet deceptively flexible mechanics, and with an understanding of the physics systems at play, you can really do some impressive things in both.

    Some tips from a former speedrunner of this game;
    - You can do a really interesting technique called a "Jump Stab" where you jump and press the climb input + attack input and you'll almost do the equivalent of a plunge attack from the souls games but it stabs instead with a fully charged grip meter. The remake features a new way that this can be done by just holding square after a jump if you're playing on the modern control scheme.
    - As for the grip meter, One can charge the stabs faster if you hold attack input instead of doing a single press. It will come in handy on later fights
    - When you get knocked down, I think the remake allows you to spam face buttons to recover from the stun faster, the original game it could be done by spinning the left stick
    - You can also recover health faster if you crouch for a bit.
    Anyway, Really cool to see that you also bought the original game and congrats on the road to 30k subs!

    • @evanmiller4502

      actually for the jump stab you don't even have to touch the grab button. just jump and hold the stab button and it'll do it

    The wall climber definitely seems to be the most agressive of all the colossi. But he's also the easiest to take down if you have the right weapon & know exactly what to do. My fastest take down (so far) is 35 seconds. I can't agree about wanting music to play as you traverse the landscape. I find it very refreshing to just hear the sounds of the environment. The wind, birds, Agro's hooves, etc. Don't get me wrong, the score by Kow Otani is possibly the greatest soundtrack to ever grace a video game.

    This is a good tip for anyone playing the game: Many colossi will come AT you so you just need to be still and wait for it to do its thing. Like waiting for swordsman on the center platform, waiting in the tunnel for the giant horse, waiting under the arches for the beard one, waiting on the tiny water platform for the bird to swoop you, waiting in place in this lake for it to come up at you and it will place its tail directly under you or very close. Altho I do love seeing your overthinking, it's quite entertaining haha

  • @babrakadabra3758
    @babrakadabra3758 8 месяцев назад +9

    A few more tips.
    Mightve helped with the serpent one. If you jump, then grab + attack you can do a special move.
    It took so long for the blackess to get to you after the sepent battle because 1) it was a large Colossus, and 2) it was sinking pretty quickly. More surface area to cover and more distance to travel. If you press L1 or L2, you can get the canera to point at the Colossus. Will help to orient you where to look especially in the next batch of Colossi.
    +1 shadow and +1 dove when you kill a colossus.
    With the 8th Colossus (my favorite) the higher it falls, the longer it'll stay down. You can roll out a window, grab the ledge, and drop down and grab a window near the bottom.
    You can hold crouch to regain health faster.

    The "seal its quick movement" hint might've been a bit poorly translated from japanese. "Seal" was likely meant as disrupt/hinder and "quick" probably meant deft/dextrous, referencing his ability to climb.

    Honestly it made me a little sad you didn’t use Agro more to conquer the 9th colossus. Shooting from Agro’s back to quickly take down the feet then sweeping around it as it falls while you rise to stand on Agro’s back and leap on to the colossus is so epic. Thankfully there are a couple more opportunities for you to use Agro up ahead where your dear companion is absolutely vital to your success.

      @Someguy_8e2 8 месяцев назад +1

      They definitely are connected & even though the order which they were released is, (Ico, Sotc, The Last Gaurdian) the timeline is actually The Last Gaurdian, Sotc, then Ico. Trico is a young Colossus.

    • @13Xerro
      @13Xerro 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@Someguy_8e2It is open to interpretation, and I do agree all the games are connected, between what I can best describe as the shadow magic of the master of the valley, Dormin and the Queen, along with the horns being attributed to a curse. But my point of contention would be that Trico is not a young colossus. The colossus were earth and stone created and given life to separate and bind Dormin’s power away. Trico is flesh and blood, it’s a species of this world ‘the maneater’ according to the boys village. But in the end it was bound and enslaved by the master of the valley. I don’t see a connection to it being a colossus.

    • @Someguy_8e2

    Hey I don't usually comment on vidoes. But a cool tip for this game that makes life way easier is that when you want to go fast on the horse and you're currently at a stand still, if you press the "go button" (x on original game, might be trinagle now?) PLUS backwards at the same time, you will kick your horse into top speed immediately. So try hitting backwards plus gallop at the same time nex time you're on your horse standing still. It's also somewhat epic and makes me feel like I'm a horse lord from the Lord of the Rings or something !! :)

    the higher the climber falls, the longer it gets to back up, so the way to do it is atracting it to the top, shooting any of its weak spots with an arrow and then jumping for your life. You can roll through one window and then catch yourself in the next windows before falling so you dont get damage but still get down faster

    Re Hats: I used to work for a fast food place for way too many years in my teens/20's. I had to wear a hat all the time for work. If I wanted to do anything after work...I'd have hat hair and would just have to swap my work hat for another hat. I kept thinking, this is probably why some people go bald. And it's like not showering, you just feel dirty all day cause you can't take your hat off. Then it's windy and the whole hat thing just kept feeling like a ball and chain.
    SO when I finally got out of that job I refused to wear a hat unless if I had to for the weather. (because using an umbrella as a man is worse than a hat lmao!)
    Some have balding issues. Guys, in particular, have their reasons. Hat's kind of make you look like a blue collar guy right.
    It's kind of a privilege to not have to wear one imo. If you don't have to have one on...imo, don't. If you think about it, when you see an old grandma having a bad hair day, you don't care right? You're not looking twice and jabbing the person next to you "Hey check that out! That hair is crazy!" No. Noooobody cares. She's old, all grandmas have that kind of short curly hair. Nobody is swooning over them. Or disrespecting them. They just don't care.
    Nobody cares about your hair. Unless if you've dyed it and shaped it into like the statue of liberty. Or there's just something really abnormal about it.

I know it may be unconventional, but it would be really interesting to see your reaction to how the game looks on the Ps2. In my opinion, the atmosphere and ambiance is unmatched in the original. The remake looks great, but the way the world looks suits the tone of the story much better in the orignal.

    I've watched your first two SOTC videos and now I'm on your third. You said "I hope your having a sick day....not like that."
    I'm actually home today because I am sick and that led me to open RUclips and look for something to watch and now I'm here! So yes I am having a sick day and here I am! Congratulations on 30k subscribers and I am glad to be a part of it!

    I played the PS3 port and it was excellent. The funny thing about this game specifically, is that it came out so late in the PS2 era and so close to the release of the PS3 that the graphics were PS3 worthy. Visually, the PS3 port isn't terribly different. I think they just updated some specifics on the graphics that you'd only see if you put frames between the games side by side. I think there might be some extra things but I can't remember.

      its basically the european ps2 version (that has improvements on its own) with stable 30 fps, somewhat higher resolution textures and screen. Also 3d support, although turning on 3d in a 1080p dislpay would basically bring you back to the ps2's 12-15 frames per second average in battle

    Loving your playthrough of this my man! Just a suggestion - you say you don't want this game to end, have you considered disabling the gods hints for the fights? I know you got a little frustrated at colossus #6 but a big part of the game is the puzzle before the fight, might give you a few more hours out of it! Peace and love bro

    As a bald man, DONT DO IT! Lol I personally find it harder to keep up than when I did have hair. I’ll shave and look really clean for two days max, then look disheveled for as long as it takes me to shave again. If you have sensitive skin, that might take a week soooo that’s five days of looking crazy..

    I always wanted to play this because I heard it was great. I will never have time to play it so it’s nice to see it played on here. It is not a game I’d want to play from watching this, but since you skip through slow parts it’s interesting to watch. Great job. Congrats on 30k.

    Hey Mati, great video as always! So glad you're playing one of my favorite games ever.
    Just wanna give you one quick gameplay tip that's gonna help you A LOT in the near future: you can hold L2 to keep the camera focused on the colossus you're fighting. Wish I'd told you this before that last one lol.

    Hey Mati,
    I really Love your content and the videos you make. And I Love it even more that you are playing one of my absolute favorite Games. Shadow of the collosus is Not only an artistical masterpiece with it's absolutely breathtaking world but also has wonderful Soundtracks. I really Love this Game for its Boss Fights but I guess you already do so too. It's just so great and I really want to say: Thank you for making this content and revisiting older but absolute bangers in Game History. If you ever need another Game I would ask of you to try Horizon Zero Dawn. This Game was one of the First Games to really make me feel and Love Video Games so it would be cool if you gave it a try. A nice day to you and everyone else who ready my comment.

    Right on Time ☺️ This will be an enjoyable late Shift. Since you already wrote about the game ending... What do you think about a GOW Playthrough... All of them would be close to the Fromsoft mega Journey, but most excited I would be about the Saga in Northmythologie. The Combat is just excellent. The Story brought me to tears. The look is mind blowing. ...can you already tell that I make a point for one of my Top 3 (Writing this... I guess it is No.1 for me) all time favourite Games? 😅

      @@matiasgago This will be Awesome! So looking forward to this. You should Play the original trilogy First... Or watch a LONG summory to understand the Nordic Saga. I played only GoW 3 because I didn't own a Playstation Back then, and only borrowed one from a friend for a Weekend.But then I was hooked, and watched a lot of videos to learn everything long before the Nordic Reboot was announced. But to Honor the awesomeness you need to know where Kratos came from. ...I'm already so hyped while typing here. 😅

    the way i remember this game is it never told you anything at the beginning.. you bring in the girl, you put her down.. you dont know whats going on.. you go fight the monsters.. you dont know why.. i guess its so this girl will wake up and give you a kiss.. you beat the game and she dies an you die and all the monsters are dead.. thats what i remember.

    Three per episode is fine, but keep in mind that there are 16. So for the finale, you will only have the final colossus, which isn’t that bad of a thing tbh. It might be just as long with you talking about it in the credits and stuff. Keep doing what you enjoy doing!

    • @13Xerro

      The final colossus and the end of the game is usually enough content for the finale as there is a lot to it including a couple of huge cutscenes.

    I like the idea of Basaran (the turtle), but his fight really needed a second pass. Between getting him to the geyser at the right time, needing Agro, and the lasers, it stops being fun (at least for me).
    If you're interested, you can get a colossus' attention by calling for Agro too. It's useful if you can't shoot them. Mono's the girl's name, MC is Wander.

    This series popped up last night in my feed and my first thought was, "Ok, what's some internet dude-bro going to say that will show me just how shallow he is, especially about something as incredible and moving as Shadow of the Colossus?"
    Your response was, "Is this game going to make me cry? I feel like this game is gonna make me cry." That got me to sit up and take notice. Someone displaying genuine emotion and vulnerability? A genuine whole person and not just a persona?
    Sign me the fuck up.

      42:50 Eifferent game, different energy. Each colossus is a puzzle. I'm sure someone's already used this analogy, but they are like walking Zelda dungeons. Thinking through that problem can be taxing. Also every hour you play is an exponential amount of editing after the fact. That ain't easy either.

    the game is truly a masterpiece, i played it on ps2, ps2 was too under powered for the game, the framerate was awful but, the control was so akward, it was a strugle just to play it, and back then i didn't know about the lizard or the fruit but the game was so good, still stuck in my brain until today.
    Great video man! can't wait to watch the next one 😁
